William (mainly known as Albert) was born in Wolverhampton in 1881, the son of Edward and Catherine Baker. He was baptised at All Saints Church, Wolverhampton on 10 November 1881. In 1891 the family were living at High Street, Bilston, along with Albert’s siblings, Lilly M., John and William. By 1901, they were living in Walsall, and Albert was working in the iron industry. There was an additional sibling, Eric. In 1908, Albert married Lily Holyoak in Walsall, and the couple went on to have four children – Edna (1909), Annie (1910), Albert E. (1911) and Lily C. (1914) in Walsall. In 1911 they were living in Pleck in Walsall, and Albert was working as a labourer in the iron trade.
Albert enlisted as a Private at Walsall in the 9th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers (service number 15260). On 15 August 1916, he was reported as missing, and was later reported as having died on 7 July 1916. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial in France.
