(about a year and four months since my last post, but who's counting?)

*waves to anyone who is still following*

I've been actively reading here even if I have sucked at posting.

Let's see, a brief catch up on the last year and four months.

Work had been super stressful until I shifted positions in May from supervisor to afternoon baker (I work for a certain Canadian company known for double doubles and rolling up rims). The new position came with a regular shift Monday to Friday (no weekends!) and meant I no longer was working till 11 pm every night. And so much less stress -- I hadn't really realised exactly how much stress I had been under before actually. It felt like someone just lifted a heavy weight off me that I'd grown so used to I didn't even notice it anymore until it was gone.

omphalos and I around that time revisited our The Choice To Walk universe and finally were able to pick up where we had stalled out writing it... like ten? years before? Oh god, was it that long? We've been writing almost daily on it ever since (to this day), and enjoying the hell out of it. Also the plot has got more complicated, as is wont to happen to us. Complicated in this case means characters from Of Old Mystics (Rupert and Ethan) waltzing in and demanding to become a main part of the plot. Which I suppose in one way is only fair, since Ian (one of the main characters in TCTW) was originally a bit character in OOM that demanded to become a main part of the plot. The upshot of this is that Of Old Mystics and The Choice to Walk are now both part of the same universe in our heads (which we've dubbed Of Immortal Mystics) . As well as incorporating Ethan and Rupert (and other oom characters) into the current story we're writing, we have also been writing scenes and bits post OOM (but before the TCTW bits get involved) and it's been so much fun to revisit those characters and finally get to write out the things we'd talked about happening after the end of that story.

Not sure if there would be an audience for it and I don't know when, but I do hope to post all of this, or at the very least the post OOM bits.

Things were pretty good through to the fall. I turned 50 in September (oh my god I'm old), which was mostly marked by me attempting to get back into drawing and getting an ipad pro so I could try digital art. That hobby has stuck -- I'm still doing art both digital and traditional and not completely hating the results. I may post some of the things I've done here in a future post. (Providing I actually can keep up posting this time).

Then in the first week of November in a span of like 3 days, I ended up in the ER twice, was diagnosed with an ulcer in my groin, diabetes and blood pressure high enough to be in the stroke range. To say it was a bad week would be an understatement. And then a couple of weeks after that, my wallet went missing at work. So I had to deal with all that entailed, cancelling things and getting replacements and having no ID or health card while I suddenly had all these medical appointments at various places to go to. So not fun.

Things were getting better by January -- I'm now taking way more daily medication than I ever had before in my life, but both my blood sugar and my blood pressure seemed to be under control. And, changing my diet (and maybe some of the medication? IDK) has meant I've lost a significant amount of weight. I'm not sure exact numbers --I deliberately don't weigh myself to avoid getting obsessed over such things -- but I've gone from the second biggest hole on my belt to the smallest (which is the fifth) and even that is no longer tight. And I have to wear a belt with all my jeans as they're all far too loose otherwise. I had been meaning to go buy a bunch of new clothes with my tax refund, but.... Pandemic.

Ontario declared a state of emergency on the 17th and I took a voluntary layoff on the 20th. I would be considered high risk with my health issues, plus my parents live in the same house and they're over 80 it just didn't feel like a good risk to be taking.

I've been home for going on three weeks now and have only gone out twice -- once the first week to get groceries, and today to pick up my prescriptions. I don't foresee going out again any time soon as we've switched to delivery for groceries which would be really the only thing I'd need to go out for until next month.

I've been coping, more or less. I tend to spend too much time going down the rabbit hole of reading news sites and social media about everything that is happening and I've had to work on stepping away from that and finding things that aren't anxiety inducing to concentrate on for a bit.

I've been slowly working on decluttering and tidying things up, and helping with general household things and trying to get my parents set up to maybe do some things online that they usually go and do in person. I had a tablet I'd gotten for free when I upgraded my cell phone back in September (birthday gift to myself, I upgraded from an iphone 5 to an iphone 10) and I gave that to them and set up my dad with his very first email address. My mother is now asking about facebook which is the next thing to tackle and see if I can get set up for them and explain it enough that they can use it.

I've been working my way through things saved on my pvr and watching things here and there on netflix and such. Am currently making my way through Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and finding it delightful.

I've also been listening to a lot of audiobooks as a distraction. (Mostly works by KJ Charles though currently I'm working my way through the Whybourne and Griffin series by Jordan L Hawk. I find adudiobooks particularly good to listen to when I'm trying to get asleep and I can't because I can't stop thinking about everything that's happening. The only downside is sometimes the story I'm listening to gets so good I end up staying up far later than I intended listening.

omphalos and I have been keeping each other sane. It's a story about healing first and foremost and that is what drew me to it.

The Timeline Series by Unforgotten (X-Men Movies, Rated M, Charles/Erik)

Summary (of the first story):

After Magneto of an X2-ish future succeeds in the unthinkable, Charles sends his consciousness back to 1962 to guide Erik away from the path that will lead to the genocide of the human race forty years hence.

Charles knows that Erik has always loved him, and intends to use this knowledge + sex to seduce Erik away from his ideals in his youth.

There's no way this well-thought-out, sensible, debugged and 100% bulletproof plan can possibly go wrong.

Why I like it:

This is a time travel fix-it fic which is one of my bullet proof kinks. It's a time travel fix-it fic with a rather oblivious pov character and a good deal of quiet humor, but still manages to have some pretty poignant moments.

And my last rec is a wip but one that is updating weekly. What I do do now is something someone (can't remember who for sure) on my flist a while back talked about. Where you pick a one word description for what you want to focus on improving over the year instead of making specific resolutions.

The word I chose for 2019 is "connection". I've fallen into bad habits of just reading/watching instead of participating in conversations, situations, social media or even real life interactions and I really want to break those. I also watched (and rewatched once or twice, there wasn't really enough there to watch too many times) the teaser for Dragon Age with anticipatory glee.

And I watched the Avengers 4 trailer and went... meh.

I don't really feel very attached to the MCU fandom anymore, the last movie MCU movie I watched was Black Panther and I didn't get past the second or third ep of Agents of SHIELD. The last Netflix MCU thing I watched was Jessica Jones s2. (And I will watch any future seasons of JJ) I am planning on going to see Captain Marvel (now that trailer made me squee) and if they do end up bringing the X-Men into the MCU I'll probably get drawn back in because X-Men, but beyond that I'm just not really feeling it any more.

I think part of it is I may be emotionally pulling away before they can kill/destroy any of the characters and/or relationships I have latched onto. And partially for the same reason I quit collecting comics, and then quit again after the MCU got me started again. The stories don't feel like about the characters any more so much as the specatcles -- the big multi title epic crossover EVENTS that are all DIRE and UNIVERSE ALTERING all without letting the characters and their own stories and growth have the space to breathe. The MCU movies are starting to feel just like those comic Events (usually every summer and sometimes other seasons as well) with even less (read ANY) downtime between them.

I may watch/read and even enjoy some of these Events, but it's the quieter character moments that make me fannish about stuff. A coda for the episode Rogue Arm.

I was obsessed with Galaxy Rangers back when the show first aired in this area (1987, yes I am old, shut up). I wrote copious amount of fic for it, most of which was a weird amalgamation of bad melodrama of the soap opera type and fluff, a good deal of that self-insert, and pretty much all of which was horrible. The kind of thing that leaves me very thankful that this was all before the internet was a thing so there's no lasting evidence of this point in my development as a writer.

Rewatching the series (and seeing some eps that I have no memory of having seen before) with an eye to writing fic for it was interesting. To my relief I still enjoyed the show, (rewatching things that I'd loved when I was significantly younger has not always turned out that way) and had a few ideas right off the bat. What was interesting to me though was that most of these ideas either focused on Zachary Fox or were in his pov. Back when I watched the show before Zach had been my least favorite character and I wrote him in as little as possible so to find him the focal point of my ideas now was bemusing.

When it came to the actual writing, I think the past experience I had writing the characters helped, even if it was over 25 years ago. All the voices came easily, it felt like I was getting the characters right and then it was just a matter of making sure the plot made some sort of sense.

I got a flaily Kermit gif as a comment from my recepient so I'm taking that to mean I succeeded.

Also the first kudos on the fic was from james which I found hilarious because we've written so much together though never anything Galaxy Rangers. Your main fandom of the year? Dragon Age. I not only adored Inquisition and all the new characters introduced, but that brought back my love of older characters full force. I've been reading sooo much Dragon Age fic this past year. And many many hours have been spent playing and replaying not only Inquisition but the other games as well. I haven't actually posted any fic in it yet but Omphalos and I've written probably about 300k words in an inquisition au. Which... even though it's not finished, we probably at this point should start thinking about beginning to edit and post because that is soooo many words.

2. Your favourite film watched this year? Star Wars The Force Awakens. To anyone who's known me for any length of time, this should come as no surprise. I've always counted Star Wars as my first serious fandom. I've loved the story and character and universe since I was 10 years old. It's never really let me go. Han/Leia was my first OTP. I admit to being skeptical when they first announced they were making new movies and that JJ Abrams was directing it, but as we got our first glimpses of the trailers for the movie, I began to get cautiously excited. And then I watched the Star Wars comicon panel and heard Abrams talk about Star Wars and I let go of the caution. The way he talked, he got Star Wars in a way he didn't seem to get Star Trek. I knew, walking into TFA that it was going to be amazing. It turned out to be even better than I imagined. I've seen the movie twice and only now am starting to get fic writing urges in it, but I expect that's only the beginning.

3. Your favourite book read this year? Is one that isn't officially out yet. Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen – by Lois McMaster Bujold, the latest book in the Vorkosigan series. I got an ARC from the Baen site. It was an utter and complete delight. The slow dawning realization I had in the first chapter that what I thought they were talking about was actually what they were talking about and how that shifted so much of what had happened before was one of the most delightful experiences I can remember having when reading a book. Also, if I felt at all capable of writing fic in this 'verse I would be inspired to write soooo much based on the revelations herein.

4. Your favourite TV show of the year? There's been a few shows I've really enjoyed, but the one that gave me the most sheer delight watching is a freaking cartoon. Star Wars Rebels. I hadn't sought it out when it first started airing, but then Settai made her Star Wars Rebels vid Odds Are for vividcon and I had to at least watch the pilot. ...and then mainlined the rest of season 1 in two days. Yes, it's a cartoon, but it's Star Wars and I will always be more prone for falling for Star Wars canons than any other fandom. And it hits so many of my bullet proof loves it's not funny. Also it took an idle thought I had when watching Revenge of the Sith back when it was released and answered it with a resounding yes and one of my favorite characters in the whole canon.

I'd like to be able to give a much more sophisticated and mature show as my fave for the year, but nope it's the cartoon. I swear I am a grown up. Really.

5. Your favourite online fandom community of the year? I don't know if I could point at one. I spent a lot of my fannish time on tumblr because that seems to be where fandom is concentrated, but things get wanky there so fast and with such vitriol that I find it hard to completely engage. I'm just too damn old to get excited or outraged at most of the drama any more. I've seen it all before.

6. Your best new fandom discovery of the year? Star Wars Rebels, see above. Between that and the Force Awakens I see a resurgence of the 'verse of my first fannish love.

7. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year? When Supernatural killed Charlie, and not only killed her but pretty much did so in a text book fridging sort of way. I had been actually really enjoying the season up to then and they had been tentatively earning my trust back in the way they dealt with Claire storyline, but after the way they handled Charlie its shattered for good. I still watch the show and probably will until it finishes because I still really like the people involved in it, but my fannish days for it are over.

Following a close second would be the first half of s5 of Teen Wolf having seemed to go out of its way to make up a plotline involving so many things that are squicks of mine. I still haven't watched the last two eps of it. I'm planning on doing so when there's a bit of the second half of s5 to watch immediately where hopefully the things that are actively squicking me are resolved. But I've so enjoyed the show up to this point, it was extremely disappointing to see a season that was so made of things I personally DNW.

8. Your TV boyfriend of the year? Kanan Jarrus. There would be added competition if we added movies and video games, but tv, yeah.

9. Your TV girlfriend of the year? Melinda May.

10. Your biggest squee moment of the year? Hm. There were a few things that popped to mind, but the winner would be watching the opening scrawl to the familiar John Williams music in the Force Awakens. I legit teared up. I was not expecting it to affect me that strongly, but once a Star Wars fangirl, always a Star Wars fangirl it seems.

11. The most missed of your old fandoms? Probably would have to go with Supernatural just because I still see bits of it pass my dashboard/friends page on a fairly regular basis. It was my main fandom for so long it's hard to let go entirely.

12. The fandom you haven’t tried yet, but want to? Don't know. Nothing pops to mind.

13. That includes ships, (be they slash or het, in these fandoms I'm not picky), but I also love reading about family dynamics. (Found family is one of my favorite tropes for just that reason). Basically I love reading about people connecting with and relying on each other and how their interactions affect them.

Other than character death or graphic torture, I don't tend to have many squicks and I happily read fics with ratings from G up to NC-17 so I'm fairly open that way.

Probably the biggest thing I tend to want in a fic is a happy ending, or, at the very least a hopeful one. I can handle angst and bad things happening as well as they get resolved by the end of the fic. H/C is fine as long as the comfort is at least equal if not greater than the hurt.

I love all the Ghost crew, but Kanan is the character that I gravitate to the most. I'd love to see something focusing on his relationships and interactions with the rest of the Ghost crew. Ideas/prompts:

How Hera and he got from the end of New Dawn to where they are in the series

What Kanan is learning himself when he's teaching Ezra

We know how Hera and Ezra found out Kanan is a Jedi, but how did Sabine and Zeb (and Chopper)?

Zeb is a survivor of the Empire trying to wipe out his people, Kanan, surviving order 66 has to have an idea about what that feels like. Is this something they bond over initially maybe?

But really anything focusing on Kanan is going to make me happy.

I know in the rules it says you have to write all the characters I requested, but I won't hold you to that if you have an idea that you can't work all four of them into.

That being said, I've wanted a missing scene from Mirror Dance forever -- namely what happens when Miles and Mark finally make it back to Barrayar and their reunion with Cordelia and Aral, but really anything dealing with the Vorkosigan family dynamics would be awesome. I just love seeing how they relate to each other.

Or maybe something with maybe a peek at various Winterfairs (or another holiday, that just seems particularly appropriate to a yuletide story) over the years and what the family is doing/how they celebrate/what crisis they're having to deal with, etc.

Alternatively, Gregor/Miles is a pairing I've had a great deal of fun reading and anything focusing on them getting together, or how they make it work, etc I would also adore.

And, okay going to be vague so as not to spoil, but I've been reading an ARC of Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen and in the first chapter, that thing we find out had been a thing, I would love something that looked at how it became a thing. So if you actually know what I'm talking about and want to play with that, I would be really gleeful.

The sequence that most delighted me from the series was the bit in the last episode with everyone stepping forward in turn to lend their expertise as needed to get Riley out. It had such a Leverage feel to it, with the added twist of their connection that my mind immediately went to a fandom fusion place. Something with them pulling a leverage-esque caper using that kind of swap in and out of their abilities would be awesome.

But really, all the moments I got the most joy out of in the series was just the way they all relate to each other and connected and any way you want to explore that I am sure I'd be thrilled reading.

Also Nomi and Amarinta are awesome, and especially the way Amarinta just rolls with the whole thing. I'd love to see how she deals with it more from her perspective maybe?

And Lito and Dani and Hernando and their relationship is another one I adore. Maybe something with Dani and Hernando finding out about the whole sensate thing and how they react?

Really I just love the characters, all of them so whatever you want to do with them I'll be thrilled to read.
So yeah, got side tracked the last few days pouring out my thoughts/possible plot bunnies for post Inquisition fics (in a private doc, we'll see if anything comes of it) and didn't get around to the meme so I'm going to answer a couple of them today.

1 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What kind do you tend to write most?

Oh most definitely. I gravitate to fix-it fics especially, some h/c, with the emphasis very much on comfort, schmoop and fluff (I have actual queen of schmoop icons after all), long epic AUs, ones that spring from asking one what if, and following it to the logical conclusion, and ones that are set in totally different worlds. I like the latter because of the challenge of matching the characters and canon events to the world in a way that the characters are still very recognizably themselves. I also like writing missing scenes or character beats that hopefully could be canon that we just didn't see.

But yes, if I had to pick one thing only I could write, it would have to be fix-its, those fics where something goes wrong in canon and I fix it, as the term might suggest. It's like doing h/c except the hurt comes already provided. I like to say I read far too many fairy tales as a child and I demand my characters get their happily ever after, dammit.

12 – Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?

Y'know I've wracked my brains and I don't think I ever have, not that has ever reached the finished and posted stage. I've done amalgamation fics – Destiny's Bond was taking the characters and concepts from the Sentinel and twisting them to fit in the Stargate universe. And I started at one point a fic that actually melded Quantum Leap and Star Wars canon together in a way that was not as out there as it first sounds like it should be (and I'm still very sad I never got much beyond the teaser for it written because I freaking loved the concept I came up with for it).

There were a couple of times I started planning fics like that – I had an outline at one point for a Sentinel version of Tam Lin, but it never got beyond that. And I had an idea to do a J2 fic based on the hockey movie The Miracle, but although I can read some rps now apparently I still can't bring myself to write it.

Oh! Wait, there was the one ep I worked on for the Angel virtual season, that had the characters trapped in Bogart movies. That isn't quite what the question is asking about, but it's probably the closest.

I just... I like the idea of doing an actual adaptation set in a different fandom sometimes, but it never seems to actually gel when I attempt it. I can riff off the ideas and see where it takes me, but a straight adaptation just doesn't seem to be something I can do.
https://wolfling.livejournal.com/317066.html?view=comments#comments
meme","writing","fic

1 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? I know that occasionally there's a character whose voice is distinctive enough while being different enough from my own that I feel a little daunted attempting to write them – like Spike from Buffy. I prided myself at being able to slip into British speak fairly easily for a non-Brit but Spike for some reason always seemed to throw me right off. I felt confident in that I got the way he thought, it was just his voice -- the way he talked, the way he phrased things that I had problems wrapping my mind around. So I tended to avoid fic ideas where I would have had to write him. Although I did enough co-writing in Buffy fandom that I have written various pairings in which Spike is a participant even though I didn't personally write his dialogue/thoughts so I'm not sure if that counts for an answer to this question.

As for the opposite, I have written a few things that are not pairings I myself like, as intellectual exercises, or for challenges or fests. The example that popped into my head when I read the question was I wrote Dawn/Buffy thing for Secret Slasha, which was so totally not my thing, but I think it turned out pretty well.
https://wolfling.livejournal.com/316850.html?view=comments#comments
meme","writing","fic

1 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? It's all about the Jim/Blair. No other pairings need apply. (I did quite like Megan but I don't think I ever got around to pairing her off with anyone)

Stargate SG-1 – While I did occasionally read some other pairings, the only pairing I had any interest in writing was Jack/Daniel. I liked playing with the team dynamic so I enjoyed a lot of friendship stuff with Sam and Teal'c as well, but actual pairing? Definitely Jack/Daniel all the way.

Star Wars – My main pairing I wrote in stuff I've posted so far is of course Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan. Han/Leia was a very formative pairing for me back when I was a teenager and writing only for myself (and occasionally friends) so they would count too. I'm not sure if I can count an OC/OC pairing from a series written in the fandom, but if so Rilka/Jess would definitely count. If not, I think I'd go with Hera/Kanan for the third. I'm just starting to play around with these characters but I already love how their dynamic works and I think they're going to be a lot of fun.

Houston Knights – Again, this is a one pairing fandom for me. Joe/Levon, whether there be centaurs involved or not. We did have glimmerings of perhaps another, future pairing between OCs but I think that ended up being more theoretical than anything else.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel the Series – Now finally a fandom (or pair of fandoms) I don't have to strain to come up with multiple pairings I love to write. First and foremost, Giles/Ethan will forever be my OTP in the fandom. I also grew to love writing Wes/Angel, and I liked the dynamics of Wes/Gunn as well. And I'm going to cheat and also mention two others because Doyle/Cordy/Angel was something I wished I got around to writing more of, and writing Gunn/Gwen was the incredible surprise pairing that I had way too much fun with. So um, yeah, this is definitely the multiple pairing fandom for me.

Nightrunner – Again, it's all about Seregil/Alec for me. There's a few other pairings in the background, but if it wasn't for Seregil/Alec I wouldn't be writing in this fandom at all.

X-Men – This is another one I can probably actually come up with three options. Or more, really. (Like BtVS/AtS it's a big ensembley 'verse with many characters that are fun to mix and match) Charles/Erik is probably the biggest slash one. I also loved writing Kitty Pryde/Pete Wisdom (and I'm sad that I've lost track of that unfinished fic I had with them because at least in my memory it was really good). Kurt Wagner/Amanda Sefton I wrote some of back when I was in high school, again not that anyone ever saw, but still. I also, when they brought Kurt back recently in the comics realized as I was reading them, that given a chance I would probably have a ball writing Kurt/Logan if I ever sat down and did so.

Lord of the Rings – I only wrote Aragorn/Legalos in this fandom.

Real Ghostbusters – I... don't actually even remember the pairing in the fic now.

Supernatural – Another fandom that I was in long enough to have multiple pairings. Sam/Dean of course was what started it all and got me into the fandom in the first place. I grew quite fond of Dean/Castiel as well, and Sam/Gabriel, while not as obvious in the text turned out to be a helluva lot of fun to write. (And my most popular fic on AO3 by a huge margin is a Sam/Gabriel thing I wrote with Omphalos). Also any combination of those four is fun to play with.

Avengers – I've only posted one fic and the pairing in that was edging towards Tony/Bruce. I have some unfinished stuff with Tony/Pepper that was a lot of fun to play with, and another unfinished seriously cracked mashup of various comic realities that was heading in a Steve/Tony direction. So... I basically like pairings that have Tony in them I guess?

Teen Wolf – For me if I have to pick a OTP in this fandom it's Scott/Stiles. I've dabbled a little in Stiles/Derek and I liked the dynamics that was happening between them, but the fandom has come close to ruining that pairing for me. Not completely, but still. I wrote a short little Stiles/Malia piece and that was fun too. I haven't written any yet but I also think Derek/Braeden would be lots of fun. But mainly Scott/Stiles and packfic.

Dragon Age – Well Hawke/Anders is always fun. There was some Anders/Hawke/Fenris in a fic that is never going to be finished and posted because it went seriously off the rails but they had some interesting dynamics. The surprise of the current long fic Omphalos and I are working on is Dorian/Fenris which really shouldn't work, but it somehow does and oh my god are they fun to write together. I haven't actually sat down and wrote any Dorian/Iron Bull yet, but I think I'd really enjoy them too.
https://wolfling.livejournal.com/316629.html?view=comments#comments
meme","writing","fic

1 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.

I do write OCs, when the story calls for it. Most of the time they at least start out as... I don't want to say plot devices but I can't think of another term. They're there because I need a character to do something specific in my main character's story. Sometimes they remain little more than that, but there's been a few times when an OC has taken on a life of his or her own, and sometimes even ends up with their own plot arc.

Jess in the Letters series was like that -- he started out as someone to give Obi-Wan an annoyance to deal with, morphed into more of an ally character at which point I started thinking about why he would have been so annoying in the first place, and started giving him a background and motivations and suddenly he had an actual storyline and development and relationships, the whole nine yards.

The one OC that popped into my head when I first read this question was Ian from Of Old Mystics. He started out as just a mysterious older mentor figure for Ethan – (I had been picturing a sorta modern day setting Gandalf type for what we needed, which led to the name Ian). He quickly developed his own personality and backstory and took on a bit of a life of his own.

The question about whether I've ever had a character push his way into a scene when he wasn't originally supposed to be there? Yeah, that was Ian. Omphalos and I had an original purpose for him in the story, which he did fulfil, but we also ended up with him in far more scenes – and more intimate scenes than we'd originally planned. And the epilogue of the series, ended up being a way to give his story a better finish than we'd originally gave him in the story.

Not only that, but we ended up taking Ian and his backstory, changing one thing and writing original fic about him and his partner. Let me tell you, some of the most fun I've had writing was developing Ian and his world.

How do I keep OCs from becoming Mary Sues? It's not really something I consciously think about – I create original characters with as little or as much depth as needed and treat them the same as any other character. I won't say I've never written Mary Sue like characters, I think every writer goes through that phase and I certainly did when I was a teenager. I was just lucky enough that the internet didn't really exist back then so there's no proof of it.

But creating characters and seeing where they go and how they develop is part of the fun of writing, even writing fic. Just with fic, you also are doing the same with characters that come to you with the process already started.
https://wolfling.livejournal.com/316172.html?view=comments#comments
meme","writing","fic

1 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? In that case, the answer is oh goodness gracious yes. A character I may not like all that much, if I write a fic from the pov of a character who does like them, I often start seeing why they like them and end up liking them myself.

It's happened more than once, in more than one fandom, but the example that came to mind when I first read this question is Buffy Summers. I was, when I first got into the fandom rather meh on Buffy herself. (Which actually wasn't unusual, I often feel less strongly about the main character in a show with an ensemble cast than some of the secondary ones.) I didn't hate her or anything, I just... didn't find her engaging or interesting in a way that made me want to explore her character more.

My gateway character to Buffy was Giles and really one of the things that helps define Giles is his relationship with Buffy and how he feels about her. So, to write Giles and keep him true to character, I had to engage with Buffy and see her through his eyes. And I wrote a lot of Giles pov. The way Giles saw Buffy was not the way I saw her and having to look at situations about her and interactions with her from Giles' pov and get it right the way he saw and felt about her slowly changed my opinion of her as well. Buffy never became a super favorite character but I grew to like her quite a lot. One of my favorite of my own vids that I've made is a Buffy Summers vid. I doubt that would've ever happened if I hadn't had the experience of looking at her with Giles' eyes.
https://wolfling.livejournal.com/316026.html?view=comments#comments
meme","writing","fic

1 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? I know I have had characters more than once take the bit in their mouth and refuse to go in the direction I thought the scene/story needed them to go in. I've learned that when that happens, 99 times out of a hundred, following where they want to lead is both more productive and generally leads to a better story than the one I thought I was telling.

Call it a character taking over, my muse, or my subconscious plotting behind my conscious mind's back, some of the best twists and turns and interesting character interactions I've written have come out of those situations.
https://wolfling.livejournal.com/315537.html?view=comments#comments
meme","writing","fic

1 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?

I don't know if I have a muse character per se, or if I do, it's more like every character can be my muse.

But I do have what I refer to as "gateway" characters, characters in the source that I latch onto more than others and spend far too much time thinking about and figuring out and that is what eventually leads me into getting itchy fingers and feeling the need to write in that fandom. I guess that's a kind of muse?

So it's much less a muse and more along the lines of a muse per fandom.

A non-comprehensive list of my gateway characters include Giles, Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, Stiles Stilinski, Dean Winchester, etc.

To give you an example from the most recent thing I've been poking at, and that hasn't quite reached the "produce fic that is ready to be posted" stage yet.... Star Wars Rebels. I watched the entire series in two days and latched onto one character from the very first episode: Kanan Jarrus. I was fascinated by his back story and was worried that, with what I know of the Star Wars timeline, falling in love with this character is going to inevitably end in tears. That was enough to start me poking at a random scene set in the future where things did not end in tears. And, while I haven't finished anything postable yet, there is now Star Wars Rebels fic writing happening. Because of Kanan, my gateway character.

This is unusually fast for me, but am chalking that up to the fact that it isn't really a new fandom, just a new time period in an old existing fandom. Generally, it takes at least about a season and a half or the equivalent in non-tv series fandoms for a character to grab onto my interest hard enough and long enough to inspire me to write.
https://wolfling.livejournal.com/315257.html?view=comments#comments
meme","writing","fic"]}]}}
