The True Meaning of WoffBoot

"What is a WoffBoot?" - the question asked on the very first post on this blog (I'm sure you were all reading it back then). In brief, it's the phonetic pronunciation of WFBT - an acronym for 'Warhammer Fantasy Battle Tournament'.

The technical word for this is a vocologue - that is, a word shortened to an acronym, then lengthened to a word (such as 'okay', 'emcee' and 'deejay'). If you're interested in such things, there's lots more on the Haggard Hawks etymology blog.

Stay awake, there may be a test later.

And that's the way we've been for the last four years. Until I recently got thinking: not anymore we're not.

We fought several tournaments before hitting upon the magical (2D5) formula of the WoffBoot. Here is one of then, circa 2001.

It was composed in the form of a football league, hence the football suffixes. We also named the battlefields after football grounds, appropriate the specific race.

Two of the founding WoffBooters took part, along with two other novice generals, whose introduction to WFB was so overwhelming they have never played since.

That's about all I can remember (or as much as my unearthed notes will tell me), other than Leofa's Bull Taurus was frequently described as 'that pink flying cow'.

Gazarkhame

"I'm sorry," Thang said. The King of Karak Norn went from crimson to maroon in a heartbeat.

"You're what? Sorry? Sorry! You false-bearded, shale-choked barren! You axe-less, run-of-mine sampling! I'll winze your forehead with the spikes of my mug, you robbed-out face!"

Thang ducked as a granite flagon sailed over his head, breaking into chunks against the wall behind him.

"I mean, I am as of yet still-grudged, o great King Regen Gravelbeard, long may your seams give hoist," Thang said, correcting himself hurriedly.

"You spend too much time with the thrice-damned humans!" snarled the king, digging his thick-muscled fingers into the arms of his throne. "Now you're starting to talk like them!"

"It's quite true, sire," Thang said, staying in his impromptu bow. "A miserable state of affairs. But you need an emissary in Axe Bite Pass, and as my fathers all did before me, I serve you in this role."

"You're doing it again. Bringing me... what do they call them? Axe users? Pole orgies?"

"Excuses and apologies, my King," Thang said.

The King's left eye jerked closed for a second in an involuntary spasm. "Gnaaarr," he managed, as it popped open again. "Them. Instead of good news!"

"It cannot be helped. And nor is it my fault, I might add."

"That's better. Stop grovelling and explain. What's happened to Thorgnur?"

"What is a WoffBoot?"

"Gotta paint 'em all!"
The phonetic pronunciation of WFBT, which is itself an acronym for 'Warhammer Fantasy Battle Tournament'.

Or, as one Warhammer widow once said, when glancing at an email, "What is a WoffBoot?"

WoffBoots are annual events, held over the course of a weekend in Spring. A round-robin tournament of small-scale Warhammer Fantasy battles, interspersed with movies and libation.

This blog has been established so competing generals can share their efforts to prepare, build and paint new armies for each upcoming WoffBoot (hopefully providing a spur to activity).

For the WoffBoot!
