Fields of Gingham: Highborn Aelfs vs Beasts of Chaos

"So simple, even a small, easily-distracted child could follow the rules!" - with this in mind, I decided to put Age of Sigmar to the test, and challenge General Palafox to his first game.

Violent Tilting: Warriors of Chaos vs High Elves

No time to rewrite!
It's All-Skype Fight Night!

Is it strange to sit alone on your kitchen floor, surrounded by tiny plastic toys that are being commanded from a different country? No? Phew, I thought I might be in trouble for a moment there.

Welcome back for the Skype Debut of both General Palafox and his High Elves, as they brave the swampy wilds of my Swedish linoleum! A simple match, with original and best 8th Ed rules and no secret boasts - just two easy-going armies beating the living kidneys out of each other in a friendly match to the bitter death.

G'bye Elves

A final Helf check - a full army shot of the High Elves and their movement trays.

The trays are the GW plastic kit, which chops up into whatever shapes you want (hint - not round). With a bit of sticky-backed iron, some modelling concrete and a lot of PVA glue, the Helves now have their burnt deserty look finished.

There was a bit of touching up as well - gloss varnish for all the spear and weapon tips, a few missing feathers restored. And the BSB's eyes got fixed, because they were bugging me terribly! Here he is with the spearmen, who also have their pet dragon in place.

Dragon it out

...aaaand that's a wrap.

Last of the High Elves painted, although I've still got the bases and movement trays to finalise before the job's a good 'un. Save the best until last, right?

Red Arrows

Jesus, Conrad! Same team!

The RAF website describes the famous Red Arrows as an aerobatic team. These guys can't fly, so they're merely an acrobatic display team. What more could you want from your sprightly light cavalry?

Bodacious

Funny - this is actually one of the smaller units I've painted in the last few months, and it seemed to take the longest. I'm not counting cavalry units of five (Horses count double, I reckon), so perhaps I'm getting close to a burn-out. Once I've got this Helf army done, definitely time for a rest.

25 Carrots

Nothing like getting a good solid infantry unit under your belt to set you up for the evening, I think.

This is the core of General Palafox's army, a nice block of elven spears. A good solid defensive block. You'd call it a tarpit unit if they weren't elves. Having the durability of a cheese slice in a volcano takes some of the tar out for me. I suppose that worked for cigarettes, though, so why not elves?

Hi, Elves!

Another day, another army.

Not all of them! I'm not that fast. I just meant I was starting a new project, it came out wrong. These are the first couple of units for General Palafox's High Elves, which I shall mostly be painting over the next month.

Just painting them. Quiet, you.

A Close Shave: High Elves vs Dwarves

As alluded to in a previous post, this week I was visiting a long-dormant Warhammer player (self-titled 'General Palafox') in the hopes of reintroducing him to the hobby.

I'll show him da ropes,
And destroy his hopes...

High Elves were his army of choice, and in the interests of a fluffy, tutorial game, I dusted off my Dwarves.

Since I'd be demonstrating the game, I'd need to keep both army books and the ruleset in the foremost of my mind. Now I haven't played High Elves ever, and I haven't fielded Dwarves for more than a decade, but I did make suitable preparations for the challenge.

I grew a beard.
