Stanley Coren

Stanley Coren, PhD, DSc, FRSC was born in Philadelphia, received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his doctorate from Stanford University. He taught at The Graduate Faculty of The New School for Social Research and moved to the University of British Columbia in 1973.Coren has produced research papers and published items in a wide range of psychological areas including sensory processes, neuropsychology and cognition. He has published in excess of 1,000 articles. He also authored or co-authored 40 books, including 16 books for general audiences. Late in his career he shifted to the study of canine behavior and the human-canine bond. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, Canadian Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science and he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science by the University of Guelph and was named as one of the 2000 outstanding scientists of the Twentieth Century. His books on dogs have received numerous honors including the Maxwell Medal of Excellence from the Dog Writers Association of America, the Animal Behavior Society's Outstanding Children's Book Award, and was twice named "Writer of the Year" by the International Positive Dog Training Association.
