TYW Imperial Army

Another post covering the second part of my rebasing project, the Imperial/Bavarian/League forces

There is a high proportion of cavalry, which reflects the ratios in the later part of the TYW

TYW Swedish Army

Having completed the rebasing i thought I would lay out the whole Swedish/Allied army for inspection

periods I play (2016 update)

Back in 2007 not long after I started the blog I summarised what I had to play with so I thought I'd update the list to see what had changed.

20mm Ancients - Ancient British/Gauls, Greek Hoplites, Roman and recently Macedonian, Various oddments have been added and a Parthian army.

20mm Medievals Saxons/Normans and various medieval figures. A big increase here with Teutonic knights, Burgundians and Swiss and lots of extra figures enabling me to fight either HYW or WOTR games.

6mm Ancients (based for 15mm DBA so 4 times the figures per base) - Byzantine, Huns, Sassanid, Norman, Saxon, Viking. - No change

20mm Conquistadores & Aztecs - small increases in numbers

NEW 20mm Renaissance Ottomans, Poles and Cossacks

20mm TYW - Swedes/Saxons and Imperialists - No change

25mm ECW a foot and a horse regiment for each side - these were sold and I now have three foot and three horse regiments from Waller's Western Association

6mm ECW both armies (based for 15mm DBR so 4 times the figures per base) - No change

NEW 20mm WSS - Austrians, Bavarian and Hessians plus oddments like my fictitious Frundsbergers to fight small actions or to oppose my Renaissance Ottomans

20mm SYW - Prussian & Austrian - I've added Bavarians, Swedes, Frundsbergers and Jacobites

2mm SYW - little block armies, ideal for travelling game (missed from the list in 2007)

20mm AWI - British/German/Loyalist and Rebel/French - some small additions/improvements

NEW 20mm French Revolution - French/British and Mamelukes in Egypt and French and Austrians in Italy, plus some Frundsbergers

20mm Napoleonics - Austrian, British/Portuguese, French & their Allies, Prussian, Russian, Brunswick. (over 6,000 figures) - a number of small units has been added but mainly the work is repairing or upgrading individual units

20mm ACW – Union & Confederate (based for Fire & Fury) - also now used for Black Powder, just some tidying up.

20mm Colonial – British & Zulu - I now have forces for the Sudan as well

6mm WW1 – German & Russian (never used) - still not used!

20mm WW1 – various units for east Africa, plus British, French, German, Austrian and Russian - upgraded East Africa

20mm Interwars - Reds and Whites for the RCW (current area for expansion) plus French v’s Rifs - just added a few more units

20mm WW2 – where to start? Early War British, French German and Russian, Late war British, US, German and Russian. For the Mediterranean both British and Axis (mainly Italian). Plus Romanians, Japanese and other oddments - Major upgrades to the British, German, Russian and German forces - new mainly PSC units have been used to replace old ones that were sold. Lots more vehicles added as well and a substantial German force for North Africa added.

NEW 20mm WW2 winter - my recent big project covering forces for Stalingrad.

6mm WW2 – Desert – British & DAK, Eastern Front German & Russian - No change

20mm Modern – Vietnam US & NVA/VC and working on some figures for AK47 - generic African units added

plus various naval forces for various periods. - No change

Overall my 20mm armies have increased by 8,000 figures over the period.

The complete Ancient British/Gallic/German army

A final review of the army before packing them away. It's been a lot of effort, but it's been worth it

Amazingly only two figures and one horse broke during the whole exercise, which is exeptional given some of the figures must be close to original production.

Not all the figures can be fielded together. If I discard the medium/heavy cavalry and the archers it becomes Ancient British, or my keeping the archers it becomes Caledonian.
Alternatively removing most of the slingers and chariots it become Gallic Then by increasing foot as a proportion and dropping the remainling slingers and chariots it becomes Germanic.

I still intend to add more bits to the army so it can be used for Gaaltians and Gothic. I could even extend it to Dacian!

Crusader Army

Having finished all the Crusader figures in the stash I thought it would be worth assembling the army to see how they look.

A total of fourteen units, three small turcopole units, six units of knights, three unit of spearmen and two units of crossbowmen.

A couple of commanders and some monks and stragglers round it off

WW2 US Army parade

Well we had a fine and somewhat sunny day in Cheshire and with nothing else to do I have laid out my upgraded US Army as requested and as a final check.

Overall views
Front row left to right, three infantry battalions, the regimental HQ and an engineer battalion

Middle row, on the left armoured infantry battalion with tank battalion behind, middle a reconnaissance squadron, right, the transport needed to convert an infantry battalion into an armored infantry version and my old tank battalion. far right the AA company
Rear row left an armoured artillery batalion; centre a selection of tank destroyer companies; right an ordinary artillery battalion, with a chemical mortar company attached. Far rear some spares, Chaffees for a late war reconnaissance unit and a few old Airfix trucks, plus a Grant for North Africa.

Some close ups
An infantry battalion

Armoured infantry and my new tank battalion

Armoured artillery battalion M7s, the M40s and M12 (the one I bought from Dennis) are add ons. Yes I do know the M40s are post war.

The Reconnaissance Squadron, quite a mix of M8 Greyhounds

Tank destroyer companies

Engineer battalion

Airfix Half tracks and Frontline Armour in the second Armoured Infantry and Tank Battalions

Artillery battalion and Chemical Mortar company

Still missing are
A pair of M3 Mortar Carrier Half Tracks - the Hasegawa ones are horrible. If I can find some cheap diecast M21s then I'll probably use them.
The Recce Elements for the Tank Destroyer units should have three dismounted figures.
Bailed/Dismounted Tank Crews
105mm short howitzer, I've have the crew all ready for it
M32B1 Tank Recovery Vehicle (UM do a nice one but it's hard to find in the UK)

What I'd still like to work on
Tidy up the M12 155mm GMC (but I'll wait till a game when I have to use it)
Some extra armour, an extra 76mm Sherman and a couple of Jumbo's would be handy (Subsequently bought)
Rework one M36 into and M10, or possibly find another Cromwell models of the M10
Gradually try and get a consistent colour across the army, especially with units.
Add a couple of 37mm AT guns so I can replace the 57mm and cover early war as well

Now Surplus to requirements, these will be sold at some future show (Proceeds to the Army Benevolent Fund)
Three old infantry battalions

Three Frontline 76mm Shermans
One Frontline M3 Scout Car
Various assorted spare figures

My French Army of 1940

As well as painting some extra figures as detailed in an earlier post I also reorganised and rebased the rest of my French forces. So here's what I possess.

The whole army

The pretty armour - H35/H39 and R40s backed up by Char B1s and S35s with a few FT17s thrown in

Transport plus a bit of armour. Certainly need a few more R35s

Some of the infantry, the fourth battalion is incomplete, but I plan to use it as a source of figures for a Reece battalion

Artillery, a couple of 47mm AT guns backed up by trio of 75mm guns and a 75mm mountain gun

Another view of the transport

And the armour

The whole arny again

Further work to do on rebasing the cyclists so I can have a company of these as part of the Reece battalion

Napoleonic Russian Army Review

Given I'd just completed some generals I thought it was worth a review of my Russians to see what's still needed. (Don't forget to see a bigger picture right click on the image and open in a new tab. Otherwise it opens in Lightbox)

The complete army

The original infantry Paskevitch's 26th division, nearly 40 years old. Originally painted for a big Borodino bash at the Bath Wargames Club.

The "second" division, a mix of Guards, Grenadiers and Militia

The guns, being Russian, you need a lot of these. Original Airfix conversions to the left.

The heavy cavalry, three regiments each of cuirassiers and dragoons.

Light cavalry, three and a half regiments, hussars, cahsseurs and lancers, plus a single guard cossack regiment. Plus a horse battery.

The cossacks

A few more pictures

Certainly need to paint a few more commanders.

Jacobites completed !!!

After what has been a long haul, I've finally finished my Jacobite Highlanders. There are six clan regiments all armed with hand to hand weapons so they can be used for the widest period possible, and a couple of musket armed skirmishers. The later can either be used, as depicted in some prints, ahead of the Jacobite battle line or mixed in with the clan regiments to depict later clan regiments

Sharp eyed observers may spot a few posts scattered amongst the units, these are actually tubes that can take additional flags so I can double up the number of units depending on the rule system I am using.

Although the figures are from Strelets, the standard of sculpting and moulding is more like Mars, so I spent quite a while cleaning up the figures, but I was not completely successful.

I've still got the commanders and casualties to paint, but i won't have finished now that Redbox is bringing out some addition figures so I expected to add some lowland units in due course.
