Jason A. Carbine is Professor of Religious Studies at Whittier College. His primary area of scholarly expertise is Buddhism in South and Southeast Asia, with a research specialization in Sri Lanka and Myanmar, and also with a comparative interest in parts of China. He has conducted field research in Myanmar and Sri Lanka, with an emphasis on ritual, practice, and religious spaces, and he has also led study abroad programs in various parts of Asia (Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Southwest China). Overall, his teaching and research in the study of Buddhism and other Asian religions combines historical and ethnographic methodologies, and draws from an interdisciplinary body of research pertaining to the history of religions, textual studies, anthropology, comparative religious ethics, and environmental studies. He teaches a range of courses dealing with Asian religions from India to Japan, method and theory in the study of religion, Asian religion and society, globalization, and the environment.

The book focuses on the Shwegyin, one of the most important but least understood monastic groups in the country. It illuminates key aspects of monastic and wider Burmese Buddhist thought and practice, and ultimately argues for the distinctiveness of elements of that thought and practice in comparison to the Buddhist cultures of Sri Lanka and Laos.

Sons of the Buddha: Continuities and Ruptures in a Burmese Monastic Tradition

For all of the essays' utility, the book and its title are predicated on two misconceptions. One ... more For all of the essays' utility, the book and its title are predicated on two misconceptions. One is to confuse democracy with civilian and republican government. As this is a common ideological solipsism of Western political science, perhaps the authors and editor can be excused, for even the Oxford English Dictionary cannot make up its mind as to what democracy is. The other is more substantial. Despite editor Mietzner's contention, echoed in the title, that the role of the military in the politics of most South East Asian states in the 1990s, with the notable exception of Myanmar, had declined, this is a contentious proposition. The publication in 2001 of a rather more substantial volume entitled Coercion and Governance: The Declining Role of the Military in Asia (Stanford University Press), edited by Muthiah Alagappa, was premised on such an argument. That was and is, I believe, a faulty premise. Militaries in South East Asia have developed patterns of political behaviour which are both a cause and a consequence of the nature of the political system of the various countries of the region in that the role of the military in politics reflects the vicissitudes of the wider political system. The Philippine and Timor-Leste articles in the volume under review make that obvious, but all the others underline the same point in their different ways. Indeed, the differences in political systems this points to raise the question whether it is even sensible to discuss the role of the military in South East Asia as such, except as a geographic convenience.

The contributors focus on a number of religious practices across the Buddhist world, from Sri Lanka to New York, Japan to Tibet. The essays highlight not so much Buddhist doctrine or sacred texts, but rather the actual behavior and lived experience of Buddhist adherents. A general introduction by Frank E. Reynolds and Jason A. Carbine provides a historical overview and briefly characterizes the three major variants of Buddhist tradition - the Hinayana/Theravada branch practiced in Sri Lanka and much of Southeast Asia; the Mahayana branch located most notably in East Asia; and, the Vajrayana/Esoteric branch established in Tibet and Japan. It also takes note of a distinctive form of Buddhism that is now emerging among non-Asian practitioners in the West. The editors introduce each essay with a brief commentary that situates its contents within the Buddhist tradition as a whole. The pieces offer concise depictions and analyses of particular aspects of Buddhist life, including temple architecture and iconography, the consecration of sacred objects, meditative practices, devotional expressions, exorcisms, and pilgrimage journeys. Topics discussed also include the construction of religio-political and religio-social hierarchies, gender roles, the management of asocial behavior, and confrontations with dying and death.
