There seems to be an intrinsic need to find the ‘real’ you, your true self. This, however, seems to be a question whose answer seems to either be organically obtained or otherwise it can turn into a lifelong quest. More than ever, there seems to be a clear manifestation of False and True Selves, or of what a person is in real life as opposed to the mask or avatar he or she builds online. The task of newspapers and other news producers is to communicate what happens, in a language that is as neutral as possible. Interrelated with it, their personal stands are transmitted. The underlying ideologies will be limited, and if possible not allowed to transpire through the communication. The aim of this report is to analyse the language used in writing the articles and how it can be revised to reach a bigger target audience without losing its current one.

The description of Narcissus lamenting his self-loveand his unfortunate reality, as exhibited in Ovid's Metamorphoses, has manysimilarities with the particularities of the narcissistic disorder: awarped subject-object relationship, megalomania, pathologic self-love, and asadness and anger reflected at an inability to connect in a healthy manner withthe rest of humanity, as well as a self that is "worn away little by little bythe hidden fire". This essay follows the development of the disorder, pointing out some new worrying trends that are emerging in the present.

In Frank Herbert’s Dune Saga, we find a transhumanist and Nietzschean argument about the evolutio... more In Frank Herbert’s Dune Saga, we find a transhumanist and Nietzschean argument about the evolution of humans achieved as a result of the triggering effect of the Butlerian Jihad against thinking machines. I claim that the metamorphoses of the selected characters reflect the central tenants of the transformation of Nietzsche’s overhuman, or transhumanism’s posthuman. By extending these metamorphoses to include the standpoint of a fictional counterpart such as Dune’s Kwisatz Haderach, this study claims that in Science Fiction we find a possible ground for conceptualizing difficult problems that deal with the future of humanity. This investigation into the need to overcome the human condition will be held in order to see what drives human enhancement, what triggers the need for change, and how this enhancement is realised. Moreover, I claim that the Dune Saga dramatizes a future scenario that furthers the discussion on what is human by questioning the boundary between human and nonhuman.

This essay follows the development of the novel as it goes through its many different stages in a... more This essay follows the development of the novel as it goes through its many different stages in an attempt to redefine itself. By tracing the progress of this medium through archetypal manifestations that best represent it, the essay takes us from the origins of the realist novel, to the scientific innovations that raised the need for the emergence of modernism and its three-dimensional view of reality, and to the postmodern experiment. It will be seen that Science Fiction was selected as the literary genre that best represents our current reality because of its philosophical quest for the search of what is human combined with the technological progress that characterizes modernity. By analyzing key exponents of each literary movement, the essay will try to show the connection of culture, science, and worldviews that exists behind every literary genre.

By analyzing modernity’s shift from the monopoly of consciousness and the spirit to the increasin... more By analyzing modernity’s shift from the monopoly of consciousness and the spirit to the increasingly more prominent focus on the body as our anchor to reality, this study wants to assert that the damage done by the ‘spirit’ cannot be easily undone, and that it resurfaces in periodic phases in altered manifestations. The vacancy that was left where the religious and spiritual impulse had reigned supreme requested a substitute because man needs a semblance of belief to make sense of the chaotic reality that surrounds him. The need for illusions alleviates the fear of being accidental products of creation which do not serve any meaning or do not have any special value. It is precisely this quality that drives the eternal quest of man for meaning and truth and, it is my belief, that we can get a better understanding of the human condition if we analyze the illusions that drive us
