Factors Impacting On Student Learning: A Preliminary Look at the National Test of Trinidad and Tobago

Part 2 of this paper reports on a group of five science teachers' metaphors, their responses to t... more Part 2 of this paper reports on a group of five science teachers' metaphors, their responses to the concepts presented on the Diploma in Education (Dip.Ed.) programme, and the changes in their selected metaphors at the end of the programme. The analysis reveals that all the teachers' metaphors accommodated the contemporary ideas, such as studentcentredness, lesson planning, and the reflective habit, to which they were exposed. There were no changes in the teachers' selection of metaphor at the end of the programme.

Students’ achievement, students’ perceptions and predictors of success: A further look at the National Test of Trinidad and Tobago: [Unpublished] Research report

This research report is based on the 2009 National Test results in Trinidad and Tobago in the sub... more This research report is based on the 2009 National Test results in Trinidad and Tobago in the subject areas of Language Arts and Mathematics. It is the sequel to an earlier study by Anderson, George and Herbert (2009) which analysed the 2006 National Test results, also in Language Arts and Mathematics. Both studies sought to analyse educational indicator data comprising results from the National Test for Standard 3 students (aged 9-10 years) in ways that identify relationships of student achievement to factors involving students, schools and the home. The study was conducted during 2009-2010 and used the results of the 2009 administration of the National Test in Language Arts and Mathematics, as well as questionnaire responses obtained during that period. Statistical analyses included multiple regression analysis. The results indicate that in the 2009 administration of the National Test, girls scored higher than boys in both Language Arts and Mathematics. Generally, both boys and girls in all school types were satisfied with the care and attention they received from both teachers and parents as they engaged in their educational pursuits. The regression analysis results indicate that achievement in Language Arts is positively related to the extent to which students see themselves as competent readers, have a positive attitude towards school and school work, and perceive their teachers as caring about their performance in school work. The predictors for Mathematics achievement were similar to those described above for Language Arts, however, there was a fifth predictor in the model for mathematics-students' view of mathematics. The results suggest that policy makers need to consider planning for the development of students' level of satisfaction with their school environment and also teachers' ability to be supportive of and encouraging to their students as possible means of enhancing student performance, at least at the Standard 3 level.

A Tracer Study of Student Performance on CXC Chemistry and A'Level Chemistry in Trinidad and Tobago

In Trinidad and Tobago, the demand for sixth form places to pursue A-level studies continues to o... more In Trinidad and Tobago, the demand for sixth form places to pursue A-level studies continues to outstrip the supply. Typically, school administrators have used performance at the CXC examinations as the main criterion for selection of students to pursue A-level work in a given subject. This paper explores the validity of this practice with respect to the study of chemistry, by presenting the results of a tracer study which determined the relationship between student performance on CXC chemistry during the period 1989-1992 and the corresponding performance of these students on A-level chemistry two years later, 1991-1994. Data were obtained from a sample of 1485 students drawn from the population of public secondary schools in Trinidad and Tobago. The analysis reveals a moderate and statistically significant correlation coefficient of 0.49 between the overall CXC chemistry grade and overall GCE A-level chemistry grade. Higher correlation coefficients were obtained for girls in the sample than for boys. When the data were analysed by school type, the highest correlation was obtained for girls in the traditional girls' schools. Further analysis by multiple regression revealed that 31 percent of the variance in A-level performance was accounted for by the performance on the CXC profile of recall and understanding; a further 10 percent of the variance was due to performance onÂ the CXC enquiry skill profile. The paper argues that, although overall performance on CXC chemistry seems to be acting as a reasonable predictor of performance at A-level chemistry, school administrators need to pay special attention to CXC profile grades. They may also need to consider other factors, especially with respect to the boys who seem capable of showing some improvement in grades in moving from CXC to A-level chemistry.
