Ian has worked in many fields of education including K-12 in NSW state schools and as Information and Computer Technology Consultant for the Department of Education and Training in the South Coast Region. At the University Of Wollongong in the Faculty of Education he was a lecturer in the field of information and communication technologies (ICT) for preservice teacher training.
He has also worked in staff development at central units, both at the University Of Western Sydney (TDU) and at the University Of Wollongong (CEDIR). He currently is the e-learning manager for a federally funded Project “Increased Clinical Training Capacity”, working across multiple allied health disciplines both on campus and in local hospitals.

The chapters of this e-book comprise the pedagogical and research endeavours of a team of academi... more The chapters of this e-book comprise the pedagogical and research endeavours of a team of academics in higher education who worked with mobile learning devices over two years on a project entitled New Technologies: New Pedagogies project: Using mobile technologies to develop new ways of teaching and learning. The project endeavoured to take an innovative approach not only in the creation of new, authentic pedagogies for mobile devices but also in the action learning approach adopted for the professional development of participants. The project involved 15 people including teachers, IT and PD personnel. It was a large and ambitious project that resulted not only in a range of innovative pedagogies, but in the creation of more knowledgeable and confident users of mobile technologies among teachers and students.

This paper describes a major development and research study that investigated the use of mobile t... more This paper describes a major development and research study that investigated the use of mobile technologies in higher education. The project investigated the educational potential of two ubiquitous mobile devices: Palm smart phones and iPod digital audio players (mp3 players). An action learning framework for professional development was designed and implemented with a group of teachers from a Faculty of Education. Each teacher or team created pedagogies to implement appropriate use of a mobile device in different subject areas in higher education. This paper describes the project aims, design and implementation in four phases, together with a description of the project management and communication factors that helped to ensure its success.

Mobile technologies are making inroads in many aspects of education. The potential of many of the... more Mobile technologies are making inroads in many aspects of education. The potential of many of these devices is being explored in a range of educational environments but early childhood educators are not commonly early adopters of these new technologies. This paper examines the process and impact of iPods on these students' creation of original digital stories to support their understanding of how young children learn. The pedagogical approach is described in detail together with observations on the process, lessons learned, and extensions of the activity into other discipline areas.

Staff development is often conducted away from the workplace and in a hit and miss way where acad... more Staff development is often conducted away from the workplace and in a hit and miss way where academic staff are given a "dose of development" and then required to go back to their School or Faculty and be confident and comfortable in being able to enhance their learning and teaching activities with the new "medicine". Often these are "one off" sessions and upon returning to the workplace the academic feels isolated and swamped by the pressures of day-to-day activities. This paper describes a team approach at a university between the occupational therapy (OT) academic staff and an e-learning educational specialist whose role it was to provide ongoing support to academic staff for the gradual implementation of an institution wide initiative to improve basic standards of online environments. This specialist worked one day per week in the School in which the occupational therapy program was taught. The process of working side-by-side overtime sparked a willingness by the occupational therapy team to explore and trial other technological components that would engage their students. This paper highlights the collaborative process and staged implementation of this initiative, outlines key examples of e-learning initiatives trialled by the OT team, and presents the outcomes of the project as perceived by all parties.

The New Technologies: New Pedagogies Project is a nationally funded project to support the use of... more The New Technologies: New Pedagogies Project is a nationally funded project to support the use of mobile learning in higher education to support student learning. We explore the staff development process of this larger project, where academics in a Faculty of Education investigate new pedagogies that are required to meet the needs of millennial learners. The staff development process addressed the need for staff to own and use mobile technology in their professional and personal contexts in order to think differently about engaging their students in pedagogically sound ways. We identified four key actions for participants which contributed significantly to the development of the authentic tasks for their pre-service student teachers to undertake as part of their assessment: an understanding of the theoretical frameworks, (authentic learning, action learning, and mobile learning); an understanding of the affordances of the technologies; active participation in authentic tasks which modeled the practice; and active participation in cycles of reflection based on the implications for the development of new pedagogies presented by the three initial understandings.

This paper explores some of the staff development issues relating to the implementation of a mobi... more This paper explores some of the staff development issues relating to the implementation of a mobile technology project involving academics and students in a Faculty of Education at a regional university. This project has been established to explore new pedagogies that may be associated with the use of mobile learning technologies in teaching and learning activities. The staff development process was approached through the provision of opportunity for staff to own and use mobile technology in their professional and personal contexts prior to their engagement with students. These provided a lead-up time for staff to think differently about how they could engage their students in the completion of assessment activities. We explore the process of how staff members became familiar with smartphones and ipods and examine some of the issues relating to this development and readiness for using them with students. The work required to adequately prepare staff to be comfortable with their implementation with students allowed us to identify issues that would enhance the use of new and or unfamiliar mobile technologies.
