This study examined the housing quality in Ede, Nigeria and the impacts of urbanization on environmental degeneration of urban built environment. A total of 388 housing units, consisting of 236, 78 and 74 units were drawn for sampling from the high, medium and low density areas of the study area, respectively. The secondary data involved available census data, official documents and other relevant secondary data were obtained from existing literature, on books and journals. The study established that majority (62.6%) of the respondents are female while 37.3% of the respondents are male in the study area. Findings established that 63.9% and 55.1% have no educational qualification and primary education in high and medium density areas respectively while in contrast majority (91.1%) in low density area have tertiary education in the study area. Findings also revealed that householdsize has a significant influence on the overall housing quality in the study area. The study concluded that it is imperative to check and prevent further decay for good living and working environment.

The study examined road rehabilitation in Ibadan North East Local Government of Oyo State, Nigeria. The data used in this study was obtained from both primary and secondary sources. The primary data was obtained through a reconnaissance survey and administration of the questionnaire. The reconnaissance survey is appropriate to establish the nature of an environment, event or situation before making decisions. The population for this study consists of all the residents available in Ibadan north local government. Both descriptive and thematic content analysis was employed in the analysis. Findings showed that rehabilitation (3.33) is the most desirable facility in the study area. Environmental decay in a city is essentially caused by rapid urbanization and the mismatch in the provision and maintenance of housing and infrastructure. This study examined challenges of slum upgrading in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Choosing where to live is a profound decision that affects residents’ income, social interactions, health and safety, as well as daily activities. The study investigates housing preference of residents within the city of IleIfe, Nigeria. Data for the study were obtained from both primary and secondary sources. Data obtained include quality of the environment in terms of good layout, availability of infrastructural facilities like good roads, water supply, quietness, peace and adequate security etc.; socio-cultural activities; accessibility to place of work; vacant plot; security of land ownership; and closeness to the place of birth. 309 households were surveyed using multistage sampling. Background. This study examines factors responsible for poor environmental health among vulnerable residents of Ondo, Nigeria. This was with a view to suggesting policy response capable of enhancing healthy environment in the city and others with similar background. Materials and Methods. Systematic sampling was used to collect data from a total of 196 households having stratified the study area into the high, medium and low densities residential neighbourhoods. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were utilized. Results. Findings showed that low government intervention was the most important factor responsible for poor urban environmental health in the study area. Results showed that environmental factors are significantly related to health situation of vulnerable people in the study area. Conclusion. The study concluded that poverty tends to breed poor environmental and unhygienic conditions that have great impact on human health. The study therefore suggests some policy guidelines, including redevelopment (in some parts of the study area), upgrading and provision of basic infrastructural amenities and facilities.

The study investigates influence of inner-city decay on residents’ health in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. It examined the socio-economic status of the residents in the area, the physical characteristics, perception on the living environment and problems experienced. For proper investigation of the variables examined in the study, several research instruments were employed to obtain relevant information, which include field survey and questionnaire administration on 477 houses (10% of the total number of houses in the core area of Ile-Ife). The study examined the quantity and quality of infrastructure in Ibadan, Nigeria with a view to using the information to provide policy guidelines for sustainable infrastructural development. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to examine the factors that affect food shocks and how vulnerable are people to food shocks using Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State Nigeria as a case study. Methodology / approach. Data were collected from 150 households through multistage sampling from ten political wards in Ife North Local Government Area. Descriptive statistics was used to describe the socio-economic characteristics and profile food shocks experienced and identify the coping strategies employed among rural households in the study area. Results. The study revealed that majority of the household age range of between 40 to 59 (62.0 %), married (77.3 %). Also, majority of the respondent own their farm (85.3 %). This study investigates the socio-economic background of inhabitants of the inner-city of a traditional town in Southwestern Nigeria. The paper highlights survey on high density area of Ondo. Both primary and secondary data were utilized for the study. There are twelve (12) political wards in the study area out of which five (5) political wards fall under areas covered by the core. However, three wards were selected and these political wards became the sample frame. Systematic sampling technique was used in selecting residents to be sampled. The first building was chosen randomly. Subsequent unit of investigation was every 10th residential building in each ward. Slums are one of the effects of migration and the most important reason for living in the slums is poor access to better living spaces. In other words, people move into the slums due more to obstacles in their original dwelling places than to the attraction of the target city. For the collection of primary data, a set of questionnaires; targeted at slum residents; were administered to household heads living in Ilesa, Nigeria. Systematic sampling was used to select household heads in one out of every ten (10) houses located in the five (5) identified political wards that formed the core area of the ancient city. A pilot study and a reconnaissance survey revealed that there were 4,560 buildings in the five political wards. Therefore, a total of 456 household heads were selected for questionnaire administration. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used for analysis. The findings revealed that slums in the core area are the product of inadequate housing, lack of timely maintenance of infrastructures and structures, disappointment with the unmet need for housing and social amenities. The consequences of such conditions are a negative impact on the environment as well as on human health and comfort. Measures aimed at improving the situation include an urban renewal programme; which should include the reconstruction and rehabilitation of existing facilities or the redevelopment of the whole area. The study also suggests a holistic and integrated planning approach that can reduce rural poverty and improve urban livelihoods since these appear to be the main causes of slum growth in developing nations.

This paper examined facility management practices in Nigeria using Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) as a case study. Both primary and secondary data were utilized for this study. The target populations are the staffs of the Nigerian Communication Commission, Abuja, the facility managers at the NCC and the estate surveyor in charge of the facility management team at NCC Abuja. Data collected was analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Findings revealed that both genders were well represented across the study area as, 80.7% of the residents were male while 19.3% were female. Findings revealed that revealed that almost all the respondents have acquired formal education with the majority 97.8% having tertiary education, 2.2% claimed to have secondary certificate. The study showed that most of the respondents agree that the most important service to them is the maintenance service. Findings established that the main reason the management of the study area seeks the assistance of a facility manager in their organization and it explains that most of the staffs of the study area believe that the main reason for outsourcing is to focus on their core business. The study concluded that facility management is presently at its inception stage in the Nigeria and the suggestion is that the profession requires efficient championing to allow it to develop into a grown phase as being presently observed in the developed economies.

This study investigated the contribution of climate change to the growth of agro-based small scale industries in Ondo state Nigeria. The secondary data utilized were derived from the study of the interrelationship between changing climate and access to raw materials needed for production. Two hundred enterprises were sampled and results analyzed across the regions of the state. The study established that, climate change has reduced the country's arable land and has made access to raw materials difficult and unpredictable leading to collapse of many enterprises. The study also discovered that many of surviving enterprises have had to build their own supply chains by establishing their own farms, reduce production and workforce, leading to low capacity utilization and shortage of processed food and raw materials to industries. The study concluded that the problem could be mitigated through better management of arable and wetlands, enlightenment of manufacturers and processors on coping strategies and improved support from government bodies.

In most nations of the third world, the large proportion of the cities are plagued with different multi dimmentional urban growth challenges. This study examined residents’ involvement in environmental sanitation in Ilesa, Nigeria. Using multistage sampling, six political wards were selected: three from the high-density area, two from the medium-density area, and one from the low-density area. In all 300 copies of the questionnaire were administered. Data obtained were analysed using percentages and the Pearson correlation. This was with a view to suggesting policy response capable of enhancing healthy environment in the city and others with similar background. Information on the kind of toilet available revealed that 50.9% used flush toilet, 30.1% used pit latrine while 19.0% had no toilet. Likewise, there is paucity of public toilet in the city as 5.0% of the residents claimed availability of public toilet in their neighbourhood while 95.0% said public toilet was not available in their neighbourhood. This paper evaluated impact of infrastructure in residential property on its property values in Ibadan, Nigeria. A total number of 450 questionnaires were administered out of which 423 questionnaires were retrieved. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data collected for the study). The study revealed that burglary proof was seen as the strongest index of satisfaction in the study area, this was followed by security guard. Kitchen and fenced round ranked third and fourth respectively, while bathroom/toilet and access road ranked fifth and sixth respectively. Water supply ranked seventh, while drainage channel ranked lowest in the study area. The paper concluded that property developers that want to invest in residential buildings development should endeavor to provide infrastructure that will attractive rental values on their residential property in Ibadan in particular and towns and cities in developing nations.

This study examined environmental sanitation practices in Ondo, Nigeria. Data were collected having stratified the study area into the high, medium and low densities. Three political wards were randomly selected from each zone. There are 2222 buildings in the selected wards with 879 in the high; 725 in the medium and 618 in the low. Systematic sampling was used to select 10% of the buildings. A total of 222 copies of questionnaires were administered on household headsout of which 187 copies were retrieved and analyzed.Findings showed that majority (66.8%) of respondents were owners of the buildings while 33.2% were tenants. Finding revealed that 19.6% of waste storage facilities in the study area were covered refuse bins while plastic containers accounted for 9.2%. Results of the findings showed that 21.67% of waste storage facilities in the low density area were refuse bins. Findings showed that 22.9%, 21.2% and 33.3% of residents in the high, medium and low densities, respectively stored/disposed waste in less than 5 days. The predominant method of waste disposal in the high and medium density was burning, while the use of disposal site was prevalent in the low density. The study concluded on the adoption of revitalization strategy that involves community participation. This hinges on the understanding that community participation in sanitation practices is one of the most important and essential means for solving the sanitation problems at the present time.

Purpose. The paper’s purpose is to analyze and predict the food security index in Ukraine and to estimate the risk level of its reduction. Methodology / approach. The following models are used for forecasting: the Holt’s twoparameter model – to forecast the dynamics of caloric content of the daily diet and integral food security index; the ARIMA model – for modeling the food economic affordability. The autocorrelation function structure analysis is used to determine the adequacy of the models. The article discusses the procedure of assessing food security risk based on the properties of the econometric forecast error.
