Wellspring’s mission is to create an economy that is cooperative, equitable, democratic, and sustainable. We work with historically under-served communities in the Greater Springfield region by developing a network of worker cooperatives and by supporting community-led initiatives to cultivate cooperatives and collective well-being.
Wellspring’s focus on supporting co-op development in the community is an expression of our commitment to these values:
are guiding principles of cooperatives and rooted in democratic values.
Wellspring helps to build co-ops in Springfield's underserved communities. Within the co-ops, workers share profits equitably and build wealth as the businesses thrive.
co-ops are democratically owned and controlled by their members.
Local ownership strengthens the local economy and resilience. Shorter supply chains reduce the carbon footprint and keep money circulating in the community.
We strive to always be humble and open to new ideas, learning, and action.
Our values align with the values and principles of the solidarity economy. Link to SE section
Wellspring Cooperative is building a new kind of economy in Springfield, Massachusetts — one rooted in community ownership, equity, and shared prosperity. By launching worker-owned businesses that serve local anchor institutions like hospitals and universities, Wellspring taps into the region’s $1.5 billion in purchasing power to create lasting, community-based jobs.
As part of the global solidarity economy movement, Wellspring champions a system grounded in democracy, sustainability, and economic justice — not one-size-fits-all capitalism. Our focus on cooperative development is how we bring these values to life, right here in Springfield.
