Relictors Space Marines - Sternguard Squad w/ Combi-Plasma

Hello All, thanks for dropping by. My latest offering (scheduled as I am away) is my Sternguard Squad armed with Combi-Plasma Bolters, a fearsome Squad to drop down in a Drop Pod or out of a Rhino/Razorback.
These complement my existing Sternguard Squads, Special Issue Bolters and Heavy Bolters seen HERE, or my crazy burning braziers ten man Combi-Melta Squad HERE
The Sergeant is made from the Limited Edition Thunderhammer/Storm Shield veteran from a while back, I used his Storm Shield on my jump Captain with Teeth of Terra (HERE)
I put an Iron Halo on one pad with some decal chequers. This was a FW Combi-Plasma Bolter, hence the compact size.
The Powerpack was from the old metal Cypher  model, it was sold in packs of ten with a Fabius Bile manipulating arm back pack years ago, I picked one up for these and my Apothecary.
The Chainsword from the Sternguard plastics
These two Sternguard were painted in 2009! The cloaked one in May 2009, re-armed with a Combi-Melta in June 2011 and again converted to Combi-Plasma some time ago...
Good to finally see the back of them after all these years (pun intended!) Haha
The newer additions to make up numbers, a mix from mainly Sternguard plastics
Feels good to finally get these off the overdue to-do pile!

Cheers, Siph (3pts - two from 2009)

Relictors Sternguard Squad w/ Heavy Bolters

Hello All, thanks for dropping by, not only have I been busy with Titans of various sizes, I always come back to my first love, my ever expanding Relictors Chapter Battle Company. Long overdue are some Sternguard Veterans.
These are made from a variety of kits including the Sternguard Boxset, Horus Heresy plastics, old metal Sternguard set and some Dark Angel Veterans. The skeleton adorned back packs was a set of back packs from the old Cypher and Fabius Bile metal miniatures released as a blister pack of 10 for a short time to get rid of stock I guess. I have used them across several Veteran Squads.
The Sternguard Sergeant is based on a Betrayal at Calth marine with a Sternguard cloaked rear torso and head. I rather like his pose, swishing back the cloak.
The above Sternguard are from the plastics (left) and metal (right) Sternguard boxsets. I love the Special Ammo Bolter Sternguard on the right, so that made this squad Special Ammo Bolters and Heavy Bolters rather than Combi-Weapons.
The two Heavy Weapon Sternguard are based on Dark Angel Veterans (left) with Scout Heavy Bolter and modern plastics Sternguard HB (right). The ammo back pack also gives him a lot more height.

Two of these had been painted a long time ago, (Sep 2010 and Mar 2009) so its about time I finished the squad!

Relictors Chapter Sternguard w/ Combi-Meltas

Hello All, thanks for dropping by. These fine Battle Brothers were an eBay job, re-painted and re-based in part, and modified to have a squad of 10 Combi-Melta Sternguard, for when you absolutely have to melt to slag that tank! Whether I will field 10x Combi Melta Sternguard is another question, however I have that choice now :)
The Sergeant nods towards his Dark Angel heritage, Relictors are from DA and UM genestock, and quite shady Chapter too, fighting Chaos with Chaos when the opportunity rises, meaning until recently they were Excommunicate Traitorus, only recently been accepted back into the fold by Roboute Guilliman, desperate times indeed.
I subtly changed some flamer nozzles back to Melta Gun barrels with the plastic combi-weapon barrels from the bitz box, you can see the size difference between the two, the plastic being slightly thinner.
The eBay job had a grey scheme laid down that was quite a good match, however to fit my scheme and standard I extensively tidied up the highlights, re-painted the leather pouches, grenades, weapons and heads. And generally tidied up the greys and trim and then re-based either on resin bases or fitted 32mm adapter rings to the existing 25mm bases. Other than a basecoat, these were pretty much re-painted and took longer due to the re-basing than if I started from scratch! But I loved the braziers and the squad look, and the bargain price too!
The second demi-squad is led by a Marine with a burning Brazier, taken from another miniature of the eBay lot, and pinned to the backpack. He can act as a Sergeant if indeed I run as two squads.
I also drilled out all the dual barrels for the entire squad, the helmets were re-painted bone colour to signify the Relictors Veterans - Dheneb Stone base, Ushabti Bone layer and Sepia wash with a final highlight of Dheneb Stone on the prominent crest.
These veterans have the converted side-skull of the Relictors Chapter badge, unlike the majority of the army which I cheated with and used the Skull decals from the SM Transfer Sheet. Its too long ago to go back and change 200+ marines, so these are unique in the army with the exception of the 4th Company Command Squad. They also sport the metal Crux Terminatus shoulder pauldrons to denote their veteran status and skills with the heavier Tactical Dreadnought Armour.
The brazier backpacks are converted using plastic backpacks with the stabilizer jet nozzles cut off and replaced with metal braizers.
And a shot of the entire tooled up squad. An excellent addition to the army if I want to have a Drop Pod Assault theme or something for a battle - these will make effective heavy armour hunters, or Aggressor hunters!

Using Betrayal At Calth Miniatures in 40K - Mordaci Blaylock WIP

Hello Readers and Titan Enginseers, I thought I'd have a break from the massive Warlord scale hobby and do some tinkering with the Horus Heresy Betrayal At Calth (BaC) box miniatures, now, I have enough 40K to get on with and paint more Relictors without starting a HH Legion as well but the BaC box does give a great addition to my forces and the game can still be played using Relictors!

Lord Halfpenny suggested that the Captain Aethon in BaC could be used for a character found in Forgeworld's IA9 Badab War Pt1, Captain Mordaci Blaylock - ideal as he is armed with Storm Bolter and Chainfist called Foe Ripper.

I removed the Combi-Melta and added a modern '40k' era Storm Bolter and a Iron Halo and done. Captain Mordaci Blaylock - The BaC Captain is an ideal miniature for this Character of renown, has blinged up Termie Armour and a cloak, his special rules also make all Terminator Squads Scoring Units - in 7th we (weemen) interpret that as Obj Sec as everyone can score these days.
I then set about thinking what to do with the Word Bearer's Chaplain Kurtha Sedd, well a nice addition of a Combi-Grav and Bolt Pistol in place of the Crozius and we have a Sternguard Sergeant, or Captain as I please. I carefully removed the hand holding the long Crozius so the wrist guard is not damaged and the oversized Crozius and gauntlet can be used in another conversion later if needed. I have enough Chaplains at the moment.
The base was from Secret Weapon Miniatures. Suited his close together feet and gives him some 'character' height. Just held together with sticky putty for ease of painting in sub-assemblies.

Thanks for dropping in.

Relictors Sternguard #3 Re-Armed w/ Combi-Melta

Well, since I bought the FW Limited Edition Boarding MKIII Marine, I've been wondering who should get his spare Combi-Melta? Then looking at the rules for Sternguard and what the metal marines are armed with, only one has a Combi-Melta whilst the others all have Special Issue Ammunition Bolters. So...

A quick snip here and a snap apart there of one of my home built Sternguard Bolters and I've re-armed the robed marine #3 I made earlier (here) to hold the Combi-Melta, now at least two of the squad when painted will have Combi-Melta's. Watch out tanks!

Relictors Sternguard with Magnetized Weapons

This is my latest Relictor Sternguard, with heavy weapon options. I couldn't decide whether a Hvy bolter for it's rate of fire or a point blank (assault 1) template would be best, so I did both with some magnets. Knowing my knack fro rolling ones, the Heavy Flamer is probably best!
I added a small handle for placing the magnet you can see on the above - but from more than a foot away you don't notice the round magnet.
Again, I've used Cyphers backpack for the squad of Sternguard, very Relictor-ish.
Just noticed the rim of the shoulder pauldron needs touching up. Oh well, next project beckons...

Relictor Sternguard Veteran #3

Here is another of my homegrown Sternguard Veterans. I've used a Dark Angel Veteran body with cloak but filed off the chest icon of a Dark Angel sword and added a tiny skull in its place. The converted bolter was made using my conversion method posted here. The helmet is a FW Red Scorpions Sergeant helmet and the back pack is a Cypher backpack like my other Sternguard.

I've used a Terminator Honours shoulder pad and another pad from a Chaos Marine sprue (in keeping with the dubious Relictor practices of dabbling with Chaos artifacts). The cloak was painted using Dheneb Stone foundation paint and a few washes of Delvan Mud and Gryphonne Sepia, with some Graveyard Earth on the recesses too. The shoulder pad rims and bolter casing and helmet are all Bleached Bone.

Seven Sternguard Veterans left... and a Rhino (or Drop Pod following my success at PornStarJedi's house).

Relictor Sternguard Veteran #2

I have just put the finishing touches to the second of my squad of ten. Here is the latest addition, with cloak as requested by Inner Geek. I have two cloaks so another mini will get the other, one has grey fur and one brown.

This Sternguard is an old Blood Angels Death Company marine with the blood-drop icon on the greave laurel carefully removed and a tiny skull put in its place (fiddly). I also removed the blood-drop icon from the chain on the left thigh. His left kneepad, shoulder trim and bone coloured helmet denotes he is a member of 1st Company, Veteran Company and the right shoulder displays a veteran badge.
I didn't use the converted bolter with drum magazine on this one as I haven't painted it yet and will use that on a marine without a cloak. But, I added a scope befitting of his veteran status. The cloak inside is layered and blended Mechrite Red and Hormagaunt Purple up to Blood Red (a really good organic colour if you are doing Nids), the outer side layered Graveyard Earth to Commando Khaki

Simple Sternguard Bolter Conversion

Continuing my Sternguard theme at the moment, I saw completed versions of these on a friends Photbucket album and thought I'd have a go at it. Really simple effective conversion for upgrading your plastic marines to Sternguard or Characters.

Simple cutting and filing the Rhino Vehicle Accessory Storm Bolter, one gun will give you two magazines. Remove the normal magazine as shown and glue. Scope is from the SM Tactical Weapons Sprue or even the AOBR marines.

Kantor Base was asking about conversions to make some sternguard, hope this helps. Just add some suitable bits from the Black Templar Upgrade box, Dark Angel Veteran Box, Chaos SM Box, Command Squad box or even WFB Chaos Marauders box (I've used some cloaks with a notch cut for the rear of the marine torso - WIP, complete soon.

See my other Simple conversions: Combi-Melta or Vehicle Storm Bolter. Hope these help.

Relictor Sternguard Veteran

So, I have made some slow progress with starting my Sternguard Unit. I'm gonna have a unit of ten so I can field 5 or 10 as appropriate. The thought of all that Special Ammo blasting away the Emperor's enemies is too good to miss! This one was from the original SM Veterans Boxset, I added a bolter sling (Cadian Lasgun strap).

I have been looking around for some backpacks to finish of these guys for some time, I did settle for normal SM backpacks with a painted numeral "I" on them to denote 1st Company but GW recently released a bitz pack containing 1 Chirugeon Backpack (Fabius Bile) and 4 Cypher Fallen Angel Backpacks, needless to say, these were just the ticket and screamed RELICTOR Veterans and the Chirugeon pack will suit my Apothecary (who said a 'lil bit of Chaos is not good for you?) Thank-you GW!
I'll leave you with some other views showing the backpack in all its ghastly glory. Only 9 Veteran Sternguard left...
(Awaiting Superglue from mail order, hence the sticky yellow tack between the backpack and body!)
