In a very short time, Cloud computing has emerged to become a de-facto paradigm for computing model based on the pay-as-you-go principle. Users access applications and computing resources in the form of remotely accessed services. The pricing models for different types of services vary according to the resource performance, the commitment time of the resource acquisition and the computing economy applied to the resource.

While largely adopted and successful, the cloud also exhibits some challenges due to the variety of applications, the heterogeneity of the resource types with different performance capabilities and how these resources are charged to the end user. One such challenge is to make the trade-off between the cost and performance. The applications running in the Cloud have different performance requirements, making it a difficult endeavor when the users plan the resource acquisition and the job execution on these resources. As a result, users are often confronted with a choice to make to efficiently benefit from the cloud resources while still guaranteeing their computation performances. Fundamental questions arise in cloud models when performance and cost are the two critical concerns:

• How to select a resource from the variety of resource pool, for each specific class of applications?
• How to schedule the application jobs strategically on a bounded number of acquired cloud resources?
• How to take advantage of the different pricing models owing the fact that some are at a discount price, but compromise on other features which affect the performance?
• Finally, what game change is Cloud Native bringing in the cloud resource management optimization?

The talk will be presented by Dr. Moise CONVOLBO, currently working as a Research Scientist in Open Service Products Department of Rakuten. He is having 7 years of experience in academic research on Cloud and Distributed Systems Optimization and serves as a member of various reputed societies including IEEE and ACM. He's also a reviewer of major cloud optimization journals such as the ACM Computing Surveys (CSUR), Journal of Cloud Computing: Advances, Systems and Applications (JoCCASA)...etc.
