This report presents findings from a research project that focused on the potential to expand Edu... more This report presents findings from a research project that focused on the potential to expand Education for Sustainability (EfS) related activities at Monash and Warwick Universities, through the Monash-Warwick Alliance. It provides details of existing EfS programmes and activities at both universities. It also discusses the level of enthusiasm for and interest in a combined EfS initiative. Finally, it signposts the future development of EfS at Monash and Warwick, whilst acknowledging the challenges to innovation. The report is informed by interviews with university stakeholders, including academics, support staff, senior management and students. Findings are placed within a wider context through a review of the current EfS literature.
Following the decline of the coal mining sector in the latter half of the 20th Century, efforts a... more Following the decline of the coal mining sector in the latter half of the 20th Century, efforts at regeneration in the South Welsh Valleys have often lacked a holistic perspective: initially focusing on immediate safety concerns and environmental aesthetics, but in separation from socioeconomic policies and initiatives. However, amid the growing integration of social, economic and environmental interventions, the Valleys Regional Park (VRP) has explicitly aimed to promote socioeconomic regeneration through the specific investment in a high-quality network of green spaces and post industrial heritage assets. Through a holistic partnership approach, the VRP seeks to develop the green economy, encourage healthy lifestyles, offer outstanding outdoor recreation and learning opportunities and provide a quality visitor destination, thereby changing perceptions of the region and making the Valleys a prime location to live, work and visit. Landing sites must be identified and the tools needed to address current ecological and climate crisis gathered. A key element of this endeavour, Latour (2019) argues will be the telling of new geo-stories and sensorial attentiveness to our ecological surroundings. Such attentiveness may be a means of bringing into being alternative futures, through experiences that provide space-time for the rehearsal (Back 2019) of post-carbon lifestyles. This paper considers childhood involvement in an environmental award scheme focused on ‘wild places’, as a means of this returning to earth, through multi-sensorial activities within both a national park landscape and local school grounds. This paper explores the use of mobile applications to interpret historical landscapes of warfare ... more This paper explores the use of mobile applications to interpret historical landscapes of warfare for which there are few material artefacts or markers remaining to aid interpretation. It takes as its case study the ‘Walking with Romans’ application, developed by the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority in Wales, UK. The application enables visitors to navigate a Roman marching camp and fortlet and exists to encourage visitation to a lesser visited part of the Brecon Beacons National Park, through the development of a resource that enables visitors to navigate the remote site using their mobile phone or tablet. ‘Walking with Romans’ combines visual, audio and interactive interpretations of the Roman occupation of the landscape explored. This paper draws upon a research project that investigated the experiences of visitors to the site who were using the app in pairs or as family groups, using both innovative video analysis and conversation analysis to explore user experiences.
