This socio-legal narrative investigates the journey from “biological” to “societal” filiation undertaken by Islamic and international law regimes in their endeavors to ensure a child's right to name and identity. Combining a discussion of filiation—a status-assigning process—with adoption and kafāla (fostering) as status-transferring mechanisms, it highlights a nuanced hierarchy relating to these processes within Muslim communities and Muslim state practices. It questions whether evolving conceptions of a child's rights to name and identity represent a paradigm shift from “no status” if born out of wedlock toward “full status” offered through national and international law and Muslim state and community practices. This study engages in a conceptual analysis of human rights in Islam and international law, and the application of this analytical discourse to explore the nature of women's human rights in the Islamic tradition. It has been argued that women's human rights in Islam are not entirely irreconcilable with current formulations of international human rights instruments emanating from the United Nations. This is an abridged version of the article. The full article is available in Jahrbuch für islamische Rechtswissenschaft, edited by Cefli Ademi and Mathias Rohe and published by C.H. Beck/Munich in 2020. The article looks at practices regarding Muslim marriages (nikāhs) in Britain. In Britain, entry on the civil register is required for a Muslim marriage to be recognised as a valid marriage. However, some Muslims do not register their marriage and live in nikāh-only marriages. This article draws upon multiple pieces of research to investigate whether decisions not to register are informed and conscious. This includes surveys, focus group discussions and academic conference panels. The results clearly highlight the plurality and diversity of both Muslim thought and conduct in contemporary Britain, and finds that Muslims are developing a number of 'new' Muslim marriage practices, such as taking out a nikāh-only marriage as a means of validating a dating relationship. The article concludes with reflections on possible responses to the considerable challenges in accommodating Muslim and civil laws of marriage.

i The Edhi Trust is a national welfare organization. Abdus Sattar Edhi established his first welfare centre and then the Edhi Trust with a mere Rs. 5000 (less than 50 pounds sterling). What started as a one-man show operating from a single room in Karachi is now the Edhi Foundation, the largest welfare organisation in Pakistan. The foundation has over 300 centres across the country, in big cities, small towns and remote rural areas, providing medical aid, family planning and emergency assistance. They own air ambulances, providing quick access to far-flung areas.

It questions whether evolving conceptions of a child's rights to name and identity represent a paradigm shift from "no status" if born out of wedlock toward "full status" offered through national and international law and Muslim state and community practices. The article challenges the dominant (formal, legal) position within the Islamic legal traditions that nasab (liation) is obtainable through marriage alone. Highlighting inherent plurality within the Islamic legal traditions, it demonstrates how Muslim state practice and actual practices of Muslim communities on the subject are neither uniform nor necessarily in accordance with stated doctrinal positions of the juristic schools to which they subscribe. Simultaneously, the paper challenges some exaggerated gaps between "Islamic" and "Western" conceptions of children's rights, arguing that child-centric resources in Islamic law tend to be suppressed by a "universalist" Western human-rights discourse. Tracing common threads through discourses within both legal traditions aimed at ensuring children a name and identity, it demonstrates that the rights values in the United Nations Convention on Rights of the Child resonate with preexisting values within the Islamic legal traditions.

The advertising industry is one of the biggest contributors to the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and helps the local agencies in developing the nation's economy. However, the Islamic advertising has not been clearly discussed in the National Advertising Policy. This creates a scenario where advertisement aired does not comply with the Muslim consumer rights as they are misleading and endangering consumer's safety as well as overclaiming. There is also the abuse that occurred in relation to use of the halal logo and the use of models in the ads that do not meet the Sharia that can influence the behaviour of consumer, especially Muslim consumer. Therefore, this study was undertaken with the aim to examine Muslim consumer rights based on the Islamic advertising principles. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach by using semi-structured interview data collection method, while for selecting the informants it used purposive sampling. The data analysis was done using constant comparative analysis. The findings showed that there are eight important aspects in preserving Muslim consumer rights based on the Islamic advertising principles. Advertisers and consumers play an important role to this eight important aspect to safeguard the Muslim consumer rights. The findings discussed that the Islamic advertising principles help shape smart and bold Muslim consumers who are vocal enough standing for personal, cultural and religious wellbeing. The implications of this study to make those advertisers and consumers as individuals who are very meticulous about their right and responsibility in creating the market more transparent.
