This article provides an outlook on the architectural development of candi (temple) in Java, by o... more This article provides an outlook on the architectural development of candi (temple) in Java, by outlining its historical contexts and elaborating significant architectural features of each period. It is argued that syncretism of Hinduism, Buddhism and ancient beliefs has encouraged an open and tolerant attitude towards life and architecture, distinctively marked by duality. A shift of paradigm occurred in the Late Classic era, indicating the emergence of more symbolic and expressive principles of architectural design.
