Anchored on the diffusion of innovation theory, the study adopted the survey research design and used the questionnaire as an instrument for data collection. Findings from the study reveal that ICTs have greatly influenced broadcast operations in the stations, especially in the areas of gathering information, production and editing of programmes, relay of programmes, display of programmes, and storage of aired programmes. Findings also show that ICTs have a positive influence on broadcasting in the stations and that the lack of in-depth training, erratic power supply, high cost of ICTs, poor Internet facilities, authenticity of news sources and inadequate supply constitute some of the challenges faced by the stations' broadcast practitioners. The study recommends that the government of Edo State should make efforts to ensure the provision of stable power supply while the owners of broadcast stations should adequately supply ICTs so that broadcast practitioners can effectively use them for enhanced communication.

The paper is anchored on the technological determinism theory and adopted the literature modelling method which includes the analytical review of both related literature and related empirical studies. The paper argues that convergence has triggered significant changes in broadcasting practice across the country just as it accentuates that regardless of the numerous issues and challenges, convergence has a whole lot in the offing. The paper concludes that convergence has come to stay, to reshape and transform broadcasting practice in Nigeria and recommends, inter alia, that the Nigerian Government should make resolute efforts to subsidise the prices of new media technologies so that broadcasters can easily afford them.

This study contributes to the discussion by examining how this critical construct impacts the broadcasting practice in Edo State, one of the country's 36 political subdivisions. The work adopts the mixed research method to investigate 100 survey respondents and interview three discussants, which helps to generate the requisite data. Findings reveal that convergence has significantly influenced broadcasting practice, and this influence is more positive than negative. The findings also show that media convergence creates additional and better opportunities, as more distribution channels for broadcast content emerge. These developments, however, may remain unsustainable if the stakeholders do not address the identified challenges appropriately. The government of Edo State can play a leading role in addressing those challenges.

The study was carried out to determine the influence of convergence on broadcasting practice in Edo State. The study was anchored on three theories – the disruptive innovation theory, technological determinism theory and mediamorphosis theory. The study adopted the mixed research method which comprised both the quantitative (survey) and the qualitative (interview) methods. It used a well structured twelve-item questionnaire as well as an interview guide to gather data. The population of study comprised the 379 staff of the three broadcast stations in the state out of which a sample size of 100 was drawn, using the Taro Yamane’s Formula. The purposive sampling method was adopted to select three notable broadcasting experts who included the Manager of Programmes, NTA Benin; the Public Relations Officer, EBS; and the Controller of Programmes, ITV. Findings from the study revealed that convergence has greatly influenced broadcasting practice in Edo State. Findings also showed that convergence has a positive influence on broadcasting practice in Edo State and has led to more avenues for the distribution of contents by broadcast practitioners in Edo State. It was also found that the lack of in-depth training on the use of new media, erratic power supply, high cost of acquiring new media, poor Internet facilities, and difficulty in verifying the authenticity of news sources constitute the challenges faced by Edo State broadcast practitioners in the era of convergence. The study concludes that if a seamless and enhanced broadcasting must be ensured in the era of convergence, the unravelled challenges must be fully tackled. To this end, the study recommends, amongst others, that Edo State Government should make efforts to ensure the provision of stable power supply in the state; that owners of broadcast stations in Edo State should make it a point of duty to adequately supply new media technologies in their broadcast stations; and that broadcast practitioners across the state should make tenacious efforts to verify information sourced from the Internet and other online media before relaying them.
