Some meagre output from von Peter himself

Resultant of the current philosophy that “a little hobbying each day is so much better than none at all AND that little hobbying each day will produce tabletop ready figures” von Peter himself presents the latest output care of said philosophy.

First up a couple of Prussian Feldjaegers who will be used as ADCs in General d’Armee 2 games. They are shown having a race. First going one way …

… and then back the other …

Whilst pigmenting the two Feldjaegers above von Peter himself came up with the bright idea of painting the Feldjaeger from his next Prussian command stand concurrently …

The refit of the Napoleonic armies continues. Albeit it at a stately pace! As a reminder the aim is to create a skirmishing stand or each battalion – plus a few extra! – and a casualty marker for each unit.

The Landwehr skirmishing stand is for the 1st battalion of the 4th East Prussian Landwehr Infantry Regiment. The figures in white are skirmishing for the Saxon Grenadier Battalion von Spiegel.

The grenadiers – the parent battalion of whom still reside in the unpigmented pile mountain – were actually meant to be the skirmishers for the 1/Prinz Maximilian Infantry Regiment which is pigmented. Whilst pigmenting it was realised that grenadier figures had been extracted from the unpigmented pile mountain in error rather than musketeers. If nothing else the red shako adornment is pleasing to the eye and this whole episode exhibits how pigmenters need to be adaptable in their work!  😇

And then there were the casualty figures. One each for the …

  • 1/4th East Prussian Landwehr Infantry Regiment with the white shoulder straps of the 1st battalion. Not that there’s much of them to see
  • 1/Prinz Maximilian Infantry Regiment – yellow faced Saxons
  • 1/Prinz Frederich August Infantry Regiment – green faced Saxons.

All figures from Calpe Miniatures.

Enough.

A Calpe Miniatures update

A quickie with some very interesting news as can be read here and reproduced below for the ease of The dear readership

Calpe Miniatures – New Ranges Coming Soon

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!

We are EXTREMELY excited to announce that, as from mid to late March, we will take over sales and production for the incredible Calpe Miniatures!

They have a seriously fabulous range of Napoleonic Prussians, Saxons and French that perfectly complement our already enormous Front Rank ranges.

Big thanks to Peter Calpe for trusting us with his baby.

And a corresponding notification on the Calpe Miniatures News page also reproduced here for the ease of The dear reader …

New producer.
The agreement to pass production rights on to another manufacturer has been signed. As from mid to late March, Gripping Beast will take over production for Calpe Miniatures.

So it appears that the existing Calpe Miniatures range is safe for the foreseeable future. Hurrah!

A big ‘thank you’ to Gripping Beast. Hopefully the casting remains at the Calpe level, i.e. very minimal cleanup required. Not that von Peter himself has any experience of Gripping Beast casting quality to prompt any concern. It will be interesting to see how Gripping Beast will sell the figures with the Calpe Veterans range currently mostly sold as individual figures whereas the newer ranges are sold as packs. Of further interest will be pricing and postage resolve.

Enough.

Eeeek! A very important public announcement

A very quick update for The dear readership.

It’s been around for a few days and von Peter himself finally spots it. As seen on the Calpe Miniatures News page here

Retirement

After almost 30 years of designing and producing metal figures, I have decided that it is time to halt production. My plan is to pass figure production onto someone else or, if that fails, to sell the business. I am currently in talks with another manufacturer who may want to continue production of the metal figures.

I will carry on producing figures until such time as I come to an agreement with another manufacturer or sell the business. I will keep you all posted, but would recommend that you send in your orders if there are any figures you require to complete your collections.

In the long term, my plans are to continue designing figures and to offer them to whoever takes over the business. It will be up to them to make the moulds required for producing metal figures. As I get older, It is the long hours of mould making, casting and packing that I need to stop. Irrespective of whether I reach agreement with someone else for continued production of metal figures, I plan to start selling digital figure files for customers to print at home. I have been designing digital figures for some time and see this as a way to circumvent, not only the production side of figure making (since customers would be printing the figures themselves) but also the increasing metal, rubber and postage charges.

Thank you all for your support over the last 30 years ,

Peter

This issue has been much on the minds at Calpe Towers for a while now. It does leave a question or two in the brain of von Peter himself who will endeavour to get answers to those questions.

On a purely selfish level Neu Schloss von Peter is well stocked with Calpe Miniatures in an unpigmented state. An order late last year filled in several of the holes in the desired Prussian, Saxon and French order of battle. But a careful stock take will be in order. Anyways von Peter himself derives significant pleasure reviewing his miniature collections. Even the aforementioned unpigmented ones!

More soon. Perhaps.

2025. A brand new beginnings

Some pigmenting completions

Oberst (Colonel) von Brause looks on deep in thought – what wine should he have with dinner tonight? Meanwhile an Adjoint (staff officer) deals with an incoming ADC who is replete with a jaunty white plume so that any casual observers can identify him easily.

Two of these figures have been sat sitting partially pigmented on the pigmenting table for literally years. If The dear reader would peer intently at the rear/second image below they may perhaps notice that the blue on the ADC – the figure with the white plume touching the corner of his bicorne – differs slightly from the blue on the other two figures. It is more obvious in the flesh! All figures were painted from the same paint pottle. The ADC was painted so as to be available for a game or two. The others were (partially) painted later to complete the command stand proper … but the blue came out more purply! Now this was probably self inflicted by von Peter himself who had probably originally not shaken/stirred the paint enough but it was REALLY ANNOYING!!! 🤬 And besides von Peter himself preferred the ADC’s blue. Several remedies were attempted all to no avail. So being of a particularly weak character von Peter himself studiously ignored the two partially painted figures and assigned his efforts elsewhere. It must also be said that a painting slump also contributed to the delay in completing the pigmentations but let us not detract from the story.

Anyways and whatever all is now complete and the local Saxons now have a proper command stand to lead them which is only right and proper. Calpe Miniatures of course.

A new Casualty Marker has also been provided for Oberst von Brause to deploy as necessary …

Above: a casualty (marker) for the Saxon 1/Prinz Frederich August Infantry Regiment has been deposited outside the from door of an Orthodox church

And just so the 1813 Allies don’t feel left out a couple of Casualty Markers have likewise rolled off the stuttering production line. This time Prussians for the Fusilier battalion of the 3rd East Prussian Infantry Regiment and a Musketeer for the 1/3rd East Prussian Infantry Regiment …

A game or two

The festive season saw The son & heir challenge von Peter himself across the gaming table. These were introductory and training games using General d’Armee 2 rules and as such some sections of the rules were not used, e.g. C-in-C Commands were not used. Overall the rules worked well and in the main quickly absorbed by their human masters. The games were played in the garage as The son & heir and partner have commandeered Bastion No. 2 – the gaming room.

The fist game saw The son & heir deploy an Austro-Prussian alliance against a Bavarian-Saxon-Polish-French force. Whilst von Peter himself sorted the figures The son & heir sorted the terrain. This is why there are Prussian landwehr fighting through a Russian village should any of The dear readers should be curious. Some images …

Above: for some reason von Peter himself likes this image. Polish infantry occupy the nearest portion of the village whilst Prussian landwehr occupied the farther neighbourhood. The Polish artillery in the foreground are trying to deter an out of shot Austrian brigade from advancing.

Above: zoomed out from the prior image. The Poles and Prussians are preparing for an extended ding-dong through and around the village. The Prussians would eventually prevail as the Poles initial good showing would falter. Saxons guard the left flank of the Poles and the aforementioned Austrians are in view. Austrian Grenzer and Saxon jagers  are skirmishing between the lines.

Above: a yet more expansive view of the early stages of the game.

The second game saw an Russo-Prussian alliance fighting a slightly reorganised Bavarian-Saxon-Polish-French force. The table was set up with 2 villages, each held by a brigade from one belligerent or the other. All other brigades would enter the table randomly based on a die roll each turn and from a random part of their baseline. Simple thought von Peter himself as he placed his on table brigade in a defensive posture garrisoning his village. “A-ha” thought The son & heir who promptly set up his garrison brigade in an attack on the other village posture!!

Above: partway through turn 1 of game 2. Rather than garrisoning his village The son & heir has his Polish brigade storming off to attack the village of von Peter himself. von Peter himself is desperately trying to realign his defences. And worse The son & heir in a distinctly underhanded move has rolled well for two of his reinforcing infantry brigades which have come on right where he would have wanted them. von Peter’s off table reserves are too busy preparing their breakfast to worry about anything else.

It’s not all bad for von Peter himself. The dice show his first round of Prussian skirmish fire. Five “6”s, a “4” and a doesn’t count “1” whilst under a “Skirmishers!” Tasking. The son &heir needed to remove one of his skirmisher stands before it got to shoot back and take a Discipline Test … which he passed … mutter mutter.

The propaganda committee working on the behalf of von Peter himself strongly suggests that the less said of the remainder of the game the better. Every time a glimmer of light would appear it rapidly got snuffed out. Oh cruel fate! The game ended when with two faltering brigades von Peter himself failed to roll a single ADC out of a potential five!!* The battered brigades did not survive their resultant meeting with “Sauvè qui Peut!”. To any non General d’Armee 2 players the prior two sentences will be meaningless. Suffice to say they were somewhat detrimental to the chances of von Peter himself rescuing the game.

* as has been pointed out – thank you David Brown – if we had been playing the C-in-C Commands I could have used the “Chief of Staff” C-in-C Command … assuming that I had any C-in-C Commands left. But we weren’t. We will be next time.

Suffice to say that both games were enjoyed by all involved. So much so that The son & heir has all but painted an Italian battalion.

Thinkings

The games have however reinforced what von Peter himself already knew …

  1. casualty markers are desired for all units. Using dice as a substitute aint pretty and does nothing for the aesthetics though they are potentially easier for all to see. But this is arguably a good thing. Should one target a unit out of several just because it is nearly “worn”
  2. likewise dedicated skirmish stands for all battalions are required
  3. decent storage where units can be stored as brigades would be a huge step forward. The current collection has outgrown the available storage solution and having some of the collection stored in a display cabinet and ad hoc containers just isn’t helpful
  4. we played on a table tennis table. Whereas this used to be permanently set up in Bastion No. 2 it now needs to be folded / unfolded for a game … and it seems to have gotten heavier over the years! It’s 9 feet by 5 feet could be a little more generous and in an ideal world it would be considered as too low.

Items 1& 2 will be a slow progress but it is underway. Items 3 & 4 are longer term and will need some deep thinking assigned.

A final note: many of the images above are “clickable” to reveal a larger and clearer image.

Enough.

A final fling for 2024?

There has been some absolutely stunning news. More figures available the table top!!!

Casualty Markers

A mechanism for tracking casualties on units is sorely needed. Whilst it is acknowledged that many gamers successfully use mini dice – often in a sabot holder – behind a unit to denote its casualty level von Peter himself finds the aesthetic somewhat lacking. Efforts are expended on the troops and the terrain and then the illusion of a world in miniature gets despoiled by dice. Everywhere!! Step forward the Casualty Markers from Warbases. In this case the 40mm version.

Casualties glued to the raw Casualty Markers. Austrian figures as pigmented by the official pigmenter of troops Austrian for von Peter himself –  Nigel Fun-nell  …

Warbases Casualty markers

… and with the basing complete …

Warbases Casualty markers complete

The markers count from 1 – or blank if one were to be accurate – through 12 which works for most units in General d’Armee 2. Elite cavalry and infantry or large cavalry and some large infantry disperse at 15 casualties so these will need something extra. von Peter himself is currently thinking a marker that denotes 10 casualties in conjunction with these casualty markers counting up from 11+. Inspiration/confirmation yet to come?

The current plan is to have a casualty marked for each unit suitably appointed with a figure in the uniform of that unit. Fairly straight forward for the infantry, a little creative thinking required for the artillery and a challenge for the cavalry as there’s not too many cavalry casualty figures out there. Investigations required but perhaps generic casualty markers will be the end result. Whatever – it’s going to be a background task and anticipated to run for a while. Marvellous understatement there.

Another wrinkle is that the Warbases Casualty Markers are “very much in demand”. Consequently they are currently out-of-stock at Warbases. Curses! von Peter himself has the five completed bases as shown above with five more in hand. More than that will need to wait. And many more are needed. Therefore … The dear readers are free to admire the casualty marking solution but ARE NOT ENCOURAGED TO GET ANY FOR THEMSELVES!! 🤣

Skirmishers

Previously reported as part of the local game control mechanism overhaul at Neu Schloss von Peter there is an intention to raise a skirmish stand for each battalion. Another long term project! Nigel Fun-nell has provided two stands of skirmishers for the two battalions of the Austrian Deutsch-Banat Grenz Infantry Regiment and von Peter himself has managed to base them. The brown is a little different to that on the parent battalions. Lesson: don’t wait a couple of decades to make additions to units. Life will go on.

More Calpe Miniatures

Much joy radiated from Neu Schloss von Peter recently. Most unusual!! 😃  First there was the joy of constructing an order for some Calpe Miniatures reinforcements. Which units, which figures to select for those units. Happiness is to be found in such activities for von Peter himself. The order was despatched from Calpe Towers on Monday 2 December 2024 UK time and arrived at Paekākāriki in New Zealand on Tuesday 10 December NZ time which seemed to be good going for the time of year. Then the joy of unpacking, checking and sorting the box of goodies. The haul …

  • 4/4th East Prussian Landwehr Regiment modelled as charging. This completes the regiment
  • skirmishers  (see “Skirmishers above) for four Prussian battalions
  • 2 mounted figures to use as Prussian ADCs for use with General d’Armee 2
  • Prussian Koningin Dragoon Regiment + Volunteer Jägers
  • Volunteer Jägers for the Brandenburg and West Prussian Dragoons
  • Volunteer Jägers for the 2nd Silesian Hussars
  • a horse artillery caisson
  • a pack each of French grenadiers and voltigeurs to complete a battalion
  • a horse missing a previously obtained Saxon “S66 – Four Light Infantry officers in firing line and skirmish poses” pack. See here for some trivia on this which. Thanks to Calpe Towers for sorting this with no bother involved.

Happiness truly is a box of new toys.

Christmas head gear for that look of distinction

Fraulien von Peter herself knows von Peter himself oh so well. For the work Christmas function she has arranged for the following head gear to adorn the head of von Peter himself. Who needs a stinking conformist red pointy Santa hat anyway?!

BTW the black “dots” are actually sequins so that von Peter himself can sparkle in his grinchiness. Excellent.  👍

Bah Humbug hat

It is unlikely … not impossible … but highly unlikely that von Peter himself will construct another post before the Christmas festivities kick in. With that in mind von Peter himself would like to wish all of The dear readers the traditional seasonal well wishes. May your futures be bright and full of toys and their use.

To Napoleon, or not to Napoleon

Let’s start with something of a more pleasing nature shall we?

The Danube Campaign – Part 2

Piano Wargames are at it again. And that is a good thing. This time their kickstarter is titled The Danube Campaign – Part 2.

The usual cheap copying of the official blurb …

From French Old Guard to Austrian Grenzers, new command sets and lots of troops in greatcoats for both nations, there is certainly something to please everyone. Also lots of free stuff as well!

After over 12 months of hard work, this project closes
the last essential gaps in the Austrian and French ranges to make room for more minor nations and some specialised units in the future.

Join me on another journey to 1809! 🙂

Bluesky or bust?

There is a seemingly ever growing tide of wargamers and hobbyists relocating – or perhaps “fleeing” would be a more accurate word – from Twitter / X for Bluesky. Both inspired and confused in a brief moment of madness von Peter himself has upset a stable and comfortable online existence by signing up for the aforementioned Bluesky.

von Peter himself has no idea of what he is doing as yet – and possibly for time never ending – but perhaps some learnings will come. For the statisticians von Peter himself is currently following 37 wargamers and 9 of them have followed von Peter himself in response. Please show some pity for those 9! 😃 At some stage something will need to be dreamt up as content for a first post. But for now checking out the posts of others is the prime directive.

As blatant self promotion von Peter himself is to be found at …

Not that there is anything to see as yet. Perhaps one day. Perhaps.

Napoleon – The Director’s Cut

von Peter himself finally did it. Despite all the “discussions” on the film in the history and wargaming communities that could only be generously described as “disappointing”. And if one were to watch Napoleon surely one would wait for the rumoured “Director’s Cut” to be released with its 48 minutes of new footage.

So it came to pass that von Peter himself finally got to watch – over the course of multiple sittings – “Napoleon – The Directors Cut“. All 3 hours and 24 minutes of it. It felt like a right of passage to do so. An obligation as a Napoleonic wargamer  to do so!

Maybe watching the film on a 27 inch computer screen – albeit a 4K 27 inch screen! – wasn’t the greatest of ideas but missing out on big screen viewing was not the issue. The history was the issue for von Peter himself. As were the battle scenes that seemed to have not much in common with what readings von Peter himself has managed on the topic. As an example the representation of Waterloo was just so wrong. I may not have been there but just as surely the director was not there either!

It was not a total disaster. There were uniforms to see that weren’t too bad. Oh dear, has von Peter himself has outed himself as a button counter?! Conversely had von Peter himself not had a fairly good grasp of the history of the age – despite not being there – it is strongly suspected that confusion would reign as to the story being told. Rubbing salt in to the wounds von Peter’s favoured 1813 did not get a mention. At all. Not that it was the only sizeable chunk of history to go missing. And let’s not dwell on Napoleon being exiled to Elba because of all the men he lost in Russia. What did happen in 1813 & 1814?! Mutter mutter.

Enough. The above ramblings may not even make sense and besides others have offered their similar views in a much more coherent manner elsewhere. Many will no doubt say that it is just Hollywood making a – supposedly – entertaining film but from his viewpoint von Peter himself places the film well and truly in the disappointing zone. Best not to mention those of the masses who now think that the film represents an accurate picture of the past. Grrr.

The Other Partizan 2024

Apparently had von Peter himself presented himself at the George Stephenson Exhibition Hall  at the Newark and Nottinghamshire Showground, Newark at around 10am on Sunday 13th October 2024 the delights of The Other Partizan 2024 would have been available to him. Sadly travel time from New Zealand to Newark is somewhat prohibitive. von Peter himself did not present himself at that place at that time.

But thanks to the efforts of others all was not lost and a virtual visit or two is possible …

For what it’s worth and based upon what he has seen the two favoured games for von Peter himself from afar …

  • “Lutzen 1632”: 28mm 30 Years War presented by the League of Extraordinary Kriegspielers
  • “Prussian Glory”: 28mm Seven Years War presented by The Bodkins. This represent a fictional what-if the day after Zorndorf with some Prussians attempting to interrupt the retreat of some Russians

… with several other worthies on display.

Sorry, no prize or even notoriety guys. 🤣

And if there is a plus side von Peter himself saved himself the entry fee of £5. Winner?  🥺

Here comes another one

In his last post von Peter himself mimicked some deranged Grim Reaper by including a notification of the then price rise incoming for Perry Miniatures metal figures … which is now an actuality. Sorry if any of The dear readers missed that heads-up.

Unfortunately a new post and a new price rise. This time it’s Foundry / Wargames Foundry / Foundry Miniatures Limited (how is one meant to refer to this company?). From an email received on the 12 October 2024 …

Advance Notice of Price Rise

Hello everyone,

It is with regret that we have to announce a price rise that will take effect from Monday 21st October. That gives you 10 days to place an order before the price rise takes effect.

It has been over four years since we had our last price rise. In that same period of time metal prices have increased by a staggering 80%. All of our business costs increase substantially year on year, especially packaging and shipping costs, with some of our suppliers having biannual increases.

Our £12 packs will increase to £14. Our £14 pack will increase to £16. With other price points increasing on an individual basis according to pack contents.

Above is Prussian Dismounted Hussars In Mirliton (HUS023).

One of two packs that have just been added to the website after being out of production for many years. You may also be interested in our Hussar Casualties (HUS022).

Once again the company has done the decent thing by providing prior warning of the price change. Thus providing a window of opportunity for some clever economics savvy operators to get in before the price does change.

So you need / want an 18th century flag

A potentially useful find stumbled upon. Not By Appointment. The official blurb ..

Being a uniform and flag design service to wargamers and to the imaginary crowned heads of 17th and 18th Century Europe, especially of the Seven Years War period – now By Appointment to the Court of Saxe-Bearstein! (But please note that the uniforms and flags presented here are not fictional – they are genuine 17th and 18th Century uniforms and flags that are as authentic as I can make them from my sources.)

The sites Template and Flag Copyright blurb provides more insights …

These flags and templates are free for anyone to use or adapt for their own use but no-one must make any money from them or their derivatives, which must also be free. I retain the copyright and also the right to withdraw use of the flags and templates if I feel they are being abused. And for the more demanding of The dear readers there is even a commission service …

I take graphics commissions, especially for ImagiNations’ flags for wargames armies but also for other graphics work – e.g. I’ve also done images of medals for wargamers’ blogs and also rank icons for a wargamer’s forum. I think my prices are very reasonable (and my customers agree! :-)) so if you have any ideas for a commission you might like me to undertake, please contact me via the contact form below.

Please note that, as with all commissioned artwork, under British copyright law (and copyright law almost everywhere in the world) any commission I undertake remains in my copyright unless such copyright is specifically assigned to the client, which usually means a much higher fee. von Peter himself is fully aware that the vast majority of The dear readers are well plugged in to the comings and goings that constitute the hobby news. But for the three who are not aware the following email was received from the conglomerate of the Parry twins at 1:48AM on the 1 October 2024 New Zealand Daylight saving time …

Metal Price Rise Cometh!
I’m afraid, due to metal cost increases and general production costs, we’re going have to raise the prices on all metals on the 14th October by 50p.
We’re sorry about this, but we’ve absorbed the increases for some time now and we do need to put them up. We’ve added a picture of ‘Mewk‘ to distract you……..
