Since 2010, Turo has consistently grown to amass over 3.5 million active guests and over 6.5 billion miles driven. This growth is great, but it also introduces challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Turo\u2019s growth pushed the limits of its monolith<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turo\u2019s growth presented new challenges for its twelve-year-old monolithic application and rapidly expanding engineering team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To address these concerns, Turo CTO Avinash Gangadharan proposed a mandate to achieve 10x scale. He developed two new engineering domains: a platform domain focused on developer experience and reliability and a core services domain focused on scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"570\" src=\"https:\/\/vfunction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/turo-gartner-presentation-team-structure-1024x570.jpeg\" alt=\"turo team structure\" class=\"wp-image-2817\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vfunction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/turo-gartner-presentation-team-structure-1024x570.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/vfunction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/turo-gartner-presentation-team-structure-300x167.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/vfunction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/turo-gartner-presentation-team-structure-768x427.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/vfunction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/turo-gartner-presentation-team-structure-1536x854.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/vfunction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/turo-gartner-presentation-team-structure.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adam\u2019s API services team acts as a bridge between the two domains. However, the proposal faced several challenges:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Justifying the initiative to leadership: <\/strong>When things are going well, it can be challenging to explain to leadership the necessity of investing in scale. Turo\u2019s consistent growth required investing in scalability without sacrificing new feature development.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe challenge is that there\u2019s sort of a sense of if \u2018it ain\u2019t broke, don\u2019t fix it.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<cite><em>Adam Safran, Senior Engineering Manager at Turo<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>System and organizational scale challenges: <\/strong>Turo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/vfunction.com\/blog\/monolithic-application\/\">monolithic application<\/a> faced several issues due to growth:<br>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The number of developers contributing to Turo\u2019s codebase more than doubled from 28 contributors in 2017 to 72 in 2024<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turo\u2019s engineering team grew from 80 engineers in 2020 to over 200 in 2024<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The number of tables grew from 62 in 2011 to 491 in 2023&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Their reservation table went from 13 in 2011 to 36 in 2019<br><br>Turo began experiencing deployment issues, with releases taking 5-10 hours to get code into production. Organizational silos emerged, leading to increased ambiguity around domain ownership.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Loss of modularity: <\/strong>As new domains were added to the application, classes written for a single purpose took on other responsibilities, leading to entanglement. Database tables previously called from one logical domain were called from two different places, mixing up their data layer with their business logic. As a result of over a decade of ad hoc development, Turo\u2019s architecture lost its modularity, impacting the application&#8217;s scalability and resiliency.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/vfunction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/turo-gartner-presentation-monolith-1024x574.jpeg\" alt=\"turo monolith\" class=\"wp-image-2815\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vfunction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/turo-gartner-presentation-monolith-1024x574.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/vfunction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/turo-gartner-presentation-monolith-300x168.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/vfunction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/turo-gartner-presentation-monolith-768x431.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/vfunction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/turo-gartner-presentation-monolith-1536x861.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/vfunction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/turo-gartner-presentation-monolith.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Turo\u2019s monolithic application as shown in vFunction<\/em>. \u201c<em>This is what happens over twelve years of ad hoc development to build a world-class vehicle marketplace without pausing to consider scale<\/em>,&#8221; said <em>Adam Safran.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The shift from <a href=\"https:\/\/vfunction.com\/blog\/monolith-to-microservices\/\">monolith to microservices<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To address the challenges posed by their monolithic application, Turo chose first to extract its conversation service. The decision was based on the service\u2019s frequency of use and overall latency issues. The goal was to improve engineering velocity by reducing complexity through distinct microservices that can scale separately and provide clarity on domain ownership.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the conversation service was modernized to a \u201clean, mean microservices machine,\u201d Turo achieved the following results:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Faster average response times that went from half a second to 19 milliseconds with the 99th percentile response times improving from about seven seconds to just under one second<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>25-100x better sync times<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improved code deployment from 5-10 hours to just five minutes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"571\" src=\"https:\/\/vfunction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/turo-gartner-presentation-25x-improvement-1024x571.jpeg\" alt=\"25X improvement\" class=\"wp-image-2814\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vfunction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/turo-gartner-presentation-25x-improvement-1024x571.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/vfunction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/turo-gartner-presentation-25x-improvement-300x167.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/vfunction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/turo-gartner-presentation-25x-improvement-768x428.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/vfunction.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/turo-gartner-presentation-25x-improvement.jpeg 1340w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Challenges following microservice extraction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, soon after creating the microservice, Turo realized that the application&#8217;s architecture could quickly become entangled without complete visibility, with teams adding new code and dependencies to new microservices.
