Is the End Fed Half Wave Vertically or Horizontally Polarized?

An end-fed halfwave (EFHW) antenna can be either vertically or horizontally polarized, depending on how it is deployed. The polarization is determined by the orientation of the radiating element, not by the feed point location or the fact that it’s end-fed.

Vertical vs. Horizontal Polarization for EFHW Antennas

  1. Vertical Orientation: If the EFHW is deployed vertically, such as hanging from a tree or a mast, it will be vertically polarized. This setup is often used when limited space is available or when you want to maximize low-angle radiation, which is beneficial for DX (long-distance) communications.
  2. Horizontal Orientation: If the antenna is deployed horizontally, such as strung between two supports like trees or poles, it will be horizontally polarized. This is typical for NVIS (Near Vertical Incidence Skywave) applications and for general multiband use when installed at a height above ground.
  3. Sloping or Inverted-L Configurations: In these setups, the antenna exhibits mixed polarization. The vertical section will contribute to vertical polarization, while the horizontal section contributes to horizontal polarization, providing a blend of both.

Considerations for Vertical Polarization

  • Ground Effects: Vertically polarized antennas are more susceptible to ground losses, so minimizing ground absorption with a proper counterpoise or a good grounding system can enhance performance.
  • Low Angle of Radiation: Vertical polarization tends to favor lower radiation angles, which is ideal for DXing, especially on the higher HF bands (20m and above).
  • Noise Pickup: Vertical antennas generally pick up more man-made noise compared to horizontal antennas, which can be a consideration if operating in noisy environments.

In summary, an EFHW can be vertically polarized if deployed vertically, but the actual polarization depends on how you set it up.

After thousands of contacts from portable locations I use 2 wire lengths with my 9:1 Balun

29 feet and 41 feet work fine for me for 40m and up

A long wire antenna fed with a 9:1 unun (often incorrectly referred to as a balun) is a popular choice for multiband HF operation. To achieve the best performance and minimize impedance mismatches across different bands, the wire length should ideally avoid resonant multiples of half-wavelengths at the frequencies of interest. Here are some recommended lengths:

Optimal Long Wire Lengths

  • 29 feet (8.8 meters)
  • 35.5 feet (10.8 meters)
  • 41 feet (12.5 meters)
  • 58 feet (17.7 meters)
  • 71 feet (21.6 meters)
  • 84 feet (25.6 meters)
  • 107 feet (32.6 meters)

These lengths are recommended because they avoid common resonant frequencies that would create high SWR and thus reduce the efficiency of the antenna. Avoiding half-wavelength resonances minimizes reactive impedance peaks, making the antenna easier to match with a tuner.

Tips for Use

  1. Grounding/Counterpoise: For best performance, ensure you have a good RF ground or counterpoise system, even though the 9:1 unun allows for some flexibility.
  2. Tuning: An external tuner is almost always required to match the impedance presented by the antenna to your transceiver.
  3. Orientation and Height: Elevate the wire and keep it as straight as possible. Avoid sharp bends, and if you have limited space, consider an inverted-L or sloping configuration.
  4. Safety: Ensure the end of the antenna is away from high-traffic areas, power lines, or other structures that could pose a safety risk.

Using these recommended lengths should give you good multiband performance while keeping the SWR manageable with a tuner.

I got just over 7 hours and 15 minutes with mine on just receiving using the 272

The BP-272 is 7.4 Volts at 1880 maH using Li-on batteries inside

The BP-307 is 7.4 Volts 3550 maH using Li-on batteries inside

I did not try the 307 but I am assuming maybe 14 hours based on it having twice the capacity

I guess I could wake up at 6am to set up the test but trying to remember the last hours to view the radio until shut off is hard for me to remember to do
