Our Mission
The mission of the Vieux Carré Commission Foundation is to support and further the cause and constitutional charge of the Vieux Carré Commission (VCC) to preserve and protect the invaluable historical architectural heritage of New Orleans’ French Quarter through charitable and educational means.
What We Do
Providing funding for major Vieux Carré Commission projects and offering free educational resources and preservation guidance to the public at large, including French Quarter residents, property owners, and preservationists worldwide.
The design guidelines provide detailed information and illustrations for property owners, design professionals, and contractors on appropriate exterior changes to properties. This comprehensive resource, which won a National Award in 2016, ensures that renovations and modifications honor the historic character and architectural integrity of the French Quarter while meeting contemporary needs.
Our award-winning Vieux Carré Virtual Library (VCVL) offers free access to thousands of historic VCC records through a map-based digital platform. This growing resource currently includes 44,000 meticulously scanned historic slides, photographs, comprehensive GIS mapping of every neighborhood structure, and detailed building color ratings. The VCVL continues to expand as we digitize paper photographs, with plans to add property files and additional materials to create a comprehensive archive.
Our innovative projects and special events enhance the cultural landscape while engaging the public in historical preservation efforts. Through restoration initiatives, educational workshops, and cultural celebrations, we bring together preservationists, residents, and visitors to ensure future generations can experience the authentic spirit and architectural beauty of the Vieux Carré.
