What is GISTM?
The Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) was launched on August 5, 2020, through a joint initiative of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) and the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM).
It is the mining industry’s first global standard and is regarded as an international milestone in tailings dam safety. GISTM is organized into six topics, comprising 15 principles and 77 auditable requirements that establish clear parameters to strengthen safety, transparency and accountability in the management of these structures.

GISTM Journey Program
As an ICMM member, Vale publicly committed to implementing the standard across all of its tailings storage facilities (TSFs). This commitment called for facilities classified as having “extreme” or “very high” consequences to comply by August 2023, with all remaining facilities (except those undergoing safe closure) to comply by August 2025.
To ensure compliance, Vale established the GISTM Journey Program, a strategic initiative focused on continuous improvement. The program provides a robust framework for identifying, addressing and preventing gaps, aligning the Company’s practices with the highest international safety and sustainability standards.
Reaffirming this commitment, Vale has already implemented GISTM at 37 TSFs in its Iron Ore Solutions business and at 13 TSFs in the Base Metals business, regardless of their consequence classification.

GISTM Principle 15
The final GISTM principle comprises three requirements related to public disclosure, ensuring active and transparent communication channels for all stakeholders.
What Principle 15 says:
Publicly disclose and provide access to up-to-date information on tailings storage facilities, reinforcing accountability and public responsibility.
To comply with Principle 15, Vale provides up-to-date information on all of its TSFs through an interactive page.
