Alum's electric boats glide into maritime defence
A local marine tech startup is moving into defence and public safety with a new class of high-performance, zero-emission boats designed to strengthen surveillance along Canada's coastlines.
ENVGO, founded by triple Waterloo Engineering alum Dr. Mike Peasgood (BASc '98, MASc '04, PhD '08, systems design engineering), designs and builds electric vessels that use hydrofoiling technology to glide above the water's surface.
Adjunct prof honoured for service to global engineering community
An adjunct professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has been honoured by the world's largest technical professional organization for his service to the global engineering community.
Dr. George Shaker will receive the 2026 Service Award from the Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S), part of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He was recognized for his leadership in strengthening the Society's global engagement, member and student support, and industry participation.
Civil prof earns the University’s highest teaching honour
A professor in the Faculty of Engineering has been recognized for more than a decade of hands-on, inclusive teaching that has reshaped how students in civil and environmental engineering experience foundational concepts.
Dr. Rania Al-Hammoud, Professor, Teaching Stream, and Associate Chair, Undergraduate Studies, in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has received the 2026 Distinguished Teacher Award — the University of Waterloo’s highest honour for teaching excellence, awarded to those with a sustained record of excellence spanning at least five years.
