Silva and Tenreyro (2006) showed that the formerly used Hausman-Taylor estimator fails to provide consistent estimates in this class of models. They propose the use of Poisson pseudo maximum likelihood (PPML) approach, that consists in solving a set of first order condition equations that stem from the Poisson regression model but are applied to attain estimates in the log-linear regression. We expand their results by including random country effects in the model, which allows for the more efficient use of country-level panel data. We use the above described model to estimate the effects of a couple of factors on the value of exports of the group of Visegrad countries (V-4, Visegrad four). These include the EU accession and the recent economic crisis, as well as other countries' characteristics typically included in the gravity models. We allow for structural breaks and check whether the moment of joining the EU could be considered as one. The results assessed for the group of the EU countries trading with 234 countries of the world in the 1999-2013 period demonstrate the beneficial effects of the EU membership as well as the existence of structural break at the moment of the EU enlargement. The robustness checks confirm validity of the proposed estimation approach.

In this paper we present the results of our research on Poland's performance of e-government in comparison to EU15 and NMS12. The analysis is based on data provided by Eurostat's Information Society's comprehensive database. We find that Poland, on average, is lagging behind other European countries from both SMEs perspective and especially from citizens perspective in implementing effective technologies in public sector. In this paper we deliver some recommendations for the polish government.

In our empirical analysis we use panel data with variables controlling for membership of these countries in the EU. Though the time series contain the years before the EU enlargement, we mainly focus on the period since the EU-Eastern enlargement (2004-2013). We estimate the determinants for EU members and NMS what permits us to find out, whether the changes in trade specialization differ between the old and the new EU members. We expect more intensive IIT as a proof of progress of economic integration of the NMS in the framework of the EU membership. Moreover, we examine additional impact of regionalism on IIT that represents the EU Common Commercial Policy (CCP) impact.

Our fundamental aim is to investigate determinants of bilateral trade in intermediate and final goods before the last economic crisis (1995-2008) and during the crisis (2009-2010). For our empirical test we use gravity models for all countries in the world. We complete this empirical test we with use of a loglinear specification of the gravity model and panel data estimation with Hausman-Taylor method. We test standard factors of gravity models such as size of the markets of trading partners approximated by their GDPs, geographic distance between the trading countries as well as their economic distance measured by difference in GDP per capita. We put into our gravity model dummy variables illustrating common official language of trade partners and their membership in regional trade agreements and monetary unions. Our model includes as well two dummy variables representing both years crucial for our study (2009-the great trade collapse and 2010-economic rebound). Moreover, we analyze interactions between both dummies connected with the time of the last crisis and other independent variables. Besides expected parameters by standard variables, we expect negative impact of the crisis on trade as well as higher elasticity of trade towards GDP during the crisis. Before gravity model analysis we present general statistics concerning international trade in intermediate and final goods.

We differentiate between EU-15, the New Member States and Poland to account for their structural differences and different trading patterns. We use a standard gravity framework and attribute the differences in importer fixed effects to non-tariff barriers. We find that the level of non-tariff barriers trump in general trumps the one of the tariffs across different sectors and analyzed groups of countries. The overall tariff equivalent in merchandise trade is around 20%, at least twice the level of tariffs. However, there are sectoral differences and in many cases the NTBs exceed 40%. We also find the non-tariff barriers in services trade to be overall higher than those in merchandise trade. At the same time, Poland and the remaining NMS exhibit higher barriers to trade in services than in the EU15 and the US.

The analysis is carried out for 234 trade partners of Poland in the period 1999-2013. In the basic version of the trade gravity model we take into account the standard factors suggested by the literature of the subject. In its extended version we control for additional factors including: relative endowments of factors of production, technological gap as measured by TFP and relative patenting performance, quality of institutions, impact of regional and bilateral trade agreements or exchange rate volatility. The impact of the Polish diaspora is also taken into account. In order to investigate the impact of the global crises on trade intensity we construct and introduce a variable depicting the severity of the crises for individual trade partners. In an attempt to obtain unbiased resu...

The fundamental goal of this research is twofold: firstly, to investigate the effect of different stages of economic integration on export to EU and non-EU countries, from becoming a member of the European Union (EU) to the Eurozone (EZ). Secondly, to check whether the functional form of the model can be considered stable over time as in the meantime the world entered the crisis phase. For an empirical test a data set covering the period from 1994 to 2010 has been used. The standard factors of gravity models, such as the size of the markets of trade partners, GDP per capita of trade partners etc. have been tested in the log-linear specification of the gravity model. In order to control the effect of monetary integration, several dummy variables indicating the process of monetary integration were added. Positive effects of growing GDP and ...
