The indications are that it will open the next phase of the Turkish state's remodelling. Although after a long and polarising campaign Turkish authorities may intend to decrease tensions both at home and abroad—especially in Turkey's relations with its Western allies—the process could have adverse effects. Thus, the EU Member States may need a new strategy towards Turkey. While it ought to focus on common European-Turkish interests, it also should be aimed at working out a model of relations that would tie Turkey closer to the EU.

The intensive political dialogue between the two allies suggests that the U.S. also wishes for that. However, their different approaches to the Syrian civil war may be a serious obstacle to reach that aim. A lack of understanding on that issue may induce Turkey's actions, which would complicate the fight against the Islamic State. In the longer-term perspective, it may also strengthen anti-Western sentiments in Turkey and weaken the country's engagement in NATO.

Thus, the incident may facilitate rapprochement between the two countries. Accusations that the assassin was linked to the Gülen movement may also lead to tensions between Turkey and the United States.

The declared goal is the total liquidation of the PKK. It will contribute to deepening political polarisation at home while in the regional dimension it may lead to greater Turkish involvement in Iraq and Syria. It is also possible that the strategy will intensify the tension between Turkey and its Western allies. Both the situation in Turkey and in the region make the achievement of the Turkish politicians’ goal dubious.

W wymiarze krajowym doprowadzi to do nasilenia polaryzacji politycznej, w regionalnym zaś może zwiększyć zaangażowanie Turcji w konflikty w Iraku i Syrii. Prawdopodobna jest również intensyfikacja napięć między Turcją a jej zachodnimi sojusznikami. Ze względu na sytuację w kraju i regionie można wątpić, czy tureckie władze zdołają osiągnąć swój cel.

Current developments in Turkey increase the political costs of Western leaders’ closer cooperation with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. At the same time, Turkey accuses its allies of hypocrisy and a lack of understanding. Thus, relations between Turkey and its Western allies remain at an impasse, which could force Turkish decision-makers to look for alternative solutions in the political and security spheres. This constitutes a challenge for the EU and the United States, especially in the face of a deterioration of relations with Russia and the migrant crisis.

Wątpliwości co do rozwoju sytuacji w Turcji generują dodatkowy koszt polityczny dla zachodnich przywódców w związku z ich bliższą współpracą z prezydentem Erdoğanem. Turcja zaś zarzuca swoim sojusznikom hipokryzję i brak zrozumienia. Tym samym relacje międzysojusznicze trwają w impasie, który może skłaniać tureckie władze do poszukiwania alternatywnych rozwiązań w wymiarach politycznym i bezpieczeństwa. Stanowi to wyzwanie dla USA i UE, zwłaszcza w świetle pogorszenia relacji z Rosją i kryzysu migracyjnego.

Whereas some of them will have an immediate effect, others will be discernible only in the mid-and long-term. The failed coup's consequences may also influence the so-called Kurdish-Turkish peace process. Although conditions in Turkey after the unsuccessful military takeover seem convenient for the talks' renewal , there is little evidence that the government and the PKK will get back at the negotiating table at a short notice.

Thus, they present Turkey as a unique actor who prefers values to its interests, giving country’s foreign policy a peculiar, ‘moral’ status. At the same time Turkish decision-makers seem to be in opposition to some international relations’ scholars who argue that countries tend to conduct their foreign policy based on objective interests.
This article examines sincerity of Turkey’s politicians’ claims by exploring their foreign policy towards two issues: the Syrian civil war and Egypt’s coup d'état. It also explores a role that morality plays in Turkey’s foreign policy, as well as a role that the ‘moral foreign policy’ narrative plays in the Justice and Development Party’s policy.

This article examines the influence of Turkey's strategic culture on its foreign and security pol... more This article examines the influence of Turkey's strategic culture on its foreign and security policy during the Justice and Development Party's era. The first part introduces the concept of strategic culture and explains its worth as an analytical tool in general as well as on the specific example of Turkey. The second part describes two dominant paradigms – namely Republican and Neo-Ottoman – in the strategic culture of Turkey. Furthermore, it examines the paradigms' roots and gives some examples of their manifestation. The third part of the article examines Justice and Development Party's stance on Turkey's strategic culture by analyzing the party's ideological roots as well as its actions in the area of foreign and security policy. Special emphasis is put on Turkey's foreign policy towards the so-called Arab Spring, which revealed some interesting restraints relevant to the strategic culture. The article ends with conclusions that show one of the biggest dilemmas Turkey will have to face in the near future.
