While learning a foreign language, students have to practice speaking through different activities in class. Unfortunately, speaking is often a challenge for students not only due to linguistic difficulties, but most importantly because of the stress caused by talking in a foreign language in front of their classmates. This phenomenon, called language anxiety, makes it impossible for some students to participate actively and thus to develop their speaking abilities. It is therefore important to understand which types of tasks cause the highest anxiety levels, as well as to find out what can help students overcome their anxiety. To answer these questions, we led a research among Polish high school students learning French. They were asked about their attitudes towards different speaking activities in class, as well as about the atmosphere in class. Au début du XIXème siècle, la ville de Paris du point de vue urbanistique se présente, encore, en grand partie, comme une ville médiévale caractérisée par des axes principaux, qui convergent vers les abords de l'île de la Cité mais, derrière ces voies, la ville est souvent un labyrinthe de petites rues plus ou moins bien entretenues. Cette disposition typique du Moyen-âge fut empirée à cause de l'absence d'un plan urbanistique visant à résoudre le premier flux d'immigration provinciale qui suivit la Révolution de 1791 qui, en 1806, amena à 650.000 le nombre des citoyens dans la capitale. 1 La résolution prise à l'époque est, au lieu de remplacer les ruelles avec voies monumentales, celle de construire de nouveaux bâtiments au fond des cours intérieures, voire de surélever les immeubles d'un ou deux étages. Par conséquent, les édifices sont trop hauts par rapport à la largeur des rues, le soleil et la lumière n'y arrivent pas, l'humidité et l'obscurité règnent.

In 1940 the ethnologist Suzanne Comhaire-Sylvain
published Le Roman de Bouqui, that is considered the first anthology totally devoted to the Haitian tale but, at the same time, a rewriting. The fifty tales composing the anthology are translated and tweaked by the author, whose approach is dual-purposed: on one hand there's the ethnologist's scientific soul, on the other a literary one. The essay analyses the characters’ descriptions and the comments of the storyteller of the Roman de Bouqui, in order to portray the double essence of the author, the collaboration of the ethnologist with the writer, the collaboration between tradition and innovation.

(En): The aim of this paper is to analyse the permeable boundaries between the author and the narrator in the rewritings of Haitian traditional oral tales, in the context of the present-day Diaspora. We will focus in particular on two storytellers, Joujou Turenne (Québec) and Mimi Barthélémy (France), to investigate the passage from the oral to the written form of a tale, a passage that disrupts the tale's narration as far as the traditional forms of opening and closing, the ultimate site of the narrator's simulation, are concerned. Our analysis will be based on a comparative study of the two storytellers' texts, by way of the specific case of the Haitian storyteller Paula Clermont Péan.

In Haiti the characters Malice and Bouqui are considered to be one of the most famous fictional couple in the folk oral tradition. In 1940 the ethnologist Suzanne Comhaire-Sylvain published Le Roman de Bouqui, the first anthology totally devoted to this inseparable duo. The essay analyses the fifty tales of Le Roman de Bouqui in order to validate the theories that link the two characters to the main historical Haitian social classes: the Bossale/Creole slave and the countryman/city dweller. The three different types of methodological analyses, i.e. morphological, lexical fields and actantial, allow an in-depth observation of the connections between fiction and reality, but also set the basis for a prediction of their future evolutions.

L’article se propose de définir les articulations entre les rites et la construction de l’identité dans l’œuvre de Joujou Turenne, conteuse, comédienne, danseuse et scénariste haïtienne, contrainte à l’exil au Québec dans les années 1970. Il s’agit d’observer comment les contes de Joujou Turenne se laissent interpréter comme textes ouverts où l’exil en diaspora québécoise peut être perçu comme un rite de passage vers une identité (post)moderne dont les repères sont sans cesse à réinventer. Dans la première partie, on interroge le parcours artistique de Joujou Turenne avec l’appui des théories de Arnold Van Gennep sur les rites de passage et des concepts de Victor Turner relatifs à l’anthropologie de la performance. La deuxième partie est consacrée à l’analyse de certains contes de Joujou Turenne afin d’y repérer des techniques nouvelles qu’elle développe au Québec pour adapter le conte haïtien traditionnel au contexte diasporique postmoderne.

(En): The lodyans is one of the most primordial genre of the Haitian oral literature. Thanks to its carnival approach to the sociopolitical reality, this fictional genre is considered the real vector of the Haitian humor. This essay analyses George Anglade's lodyans trilogy, in order to observe how the public spaces weave together with the intimate author-narrator's mental landscapes. The outcome of this intersection is the spring of a melancholic and personal hint that gets out of the traditional schemes and glimpses in some subtle narrative changes. The essay focuses on the influence of the exiled author's private mental landscape on the description and characterization of the public spaces represented. That is why these grotesques universes are enriched by an inner dimension, that confuses the public desirous of humor.

À partir des années 1960, la critique littéraire québécoise connaît un élan innovateur surtout dans le cadre de la littérature comparée. Maximilien Laroche (1937-2017), critique et professeur haïtien installé au Québec depuis les années 1960, s’insère dans cette vague en établissant des ponts et points de convergence entre les littératures québécoise et haïtienne. Cet article se propose d’analyser la pensée de Laroche, en prenant pour objet sa situation de l’entre-deux, marquée par l’interface Haïti-Québec qui engendre ses deux concepts clef : « l’homme américain » et « l’oraliture ». À travers l’analyse de ses principaux ouvrages, nous essayerons de montrer que la position exotopique (Bakhtine) de Laroche, entre les aires culturelles et littéraires du Québec et d’Haïti, contribue à une ouverture inédite aux études comparées interaméricaines, à la fois continentales (le Québec, les États-Unis, Le Brésil et la Chine) et insulaires (l’apport des croyances amérindiennes et de la culture populaire haïtienne). Toutefois, cette mondialisation du regard chez Laroche n’est jamais déconnectée de sa culture d’origine, au contraire, elle lui permet de remettre en valeur l’oraliture haïtienne, focalisée sur les croyances et valeurs ancestrales.

From the 1960s, literary criticism in Quebec has had a new impetus, in particular in the comparative field. Maximilien Laroche (1937-2017), a Haitian critic and professor who has lived in Quebec since the 1960s, has contributed to this wave by establishing some points of convergence between Quebec and Haitian literature. This essay aims to analyze Laroche’s main concepts, “the American man” (l’homme Américain) and the “oraliture” (the Haitian oral heritage), underlining how his “exotopic position” (Bakhtin) has influenced his theories. The analysis of Laroche’s main works will reveal how his transitional position between Haiti and Quebec has promoted news prospects for the interamerican comparative studies. Laroche has contributed to the broadening of the continental approach, linking literatures and cultures from all over the world, but he has also underlined the importance of indigenous and traditional cultures. However his global approach has never been disconnected from his native culture and his choice to revaluate the Haitian oraliture.
