Se basa en la interpretación de un personaje de manera improvisada en contacto con otros personajes, es por eso que suele decirse que el LARP es teatro alternativo o interactivo. Además, no existe un público a la manera habitual, sino que el público participa en el propio evento, y todos y cada uno de los participantes son público al mismo tiempo. Los personajes forman parte de una historia que va formándose entre todos los participantes, y que nunca puede predecirse como acabará, ya que es decisión de los propios participantes. Debemos tener en cuenta que alrededor de esta actividad y a raíz de que la comunidad que la practica ha reaccionado de una manera concreta, nos hace pensar que nos encontramos frente a una subcultura, con su propio lenguaje y su propia manera de entender lo que les rodea a través de esta actividad. Actualmente, en toda Europa y, en concreto, en el territorio español se está desarrollando esta actividad cultural y de ocio y, cada vez más gente participa en ella. Más allá de ser únicamente una actividad de ocio, el LARP puede considerarse como creación y producción artística.
