De afgelopen periode is de maatschappelijk druk op de welzijnssector om haar effectiviteit in bee... more De afgelopen periode is de maatschappelijk druk op de welzijnssector om haar effectiviteit in beeld te brengen steeds verder toegenomen. Dit geldt ook voor het jongerenwerk. Gezien de bestaande twijfels lijkt er dan ook een wereld te winnen met empirisch bewijs van het nut van kwalitatief hoogwaardig jongerenwerk voor de maatschappij in het algemeen en jongeren uit de doelgroep in het bijzonder. De laatste jaren is bij universiteiten, hogescholen en andere kennisinstituten een begin gemaakt met empirisch onderzoek naar de werkwijze en effecten van jongerenwerk. Samen met initiatieven van welzijnsorganisaties om effecten op lokaal niveau inzichtelijk te maken kan deze ontwikkeling zorgen voor een gedegen antwoord op de effectiviteitsvraag en kan het daarmee het maatschappelijk aanzien van het jongerenwerk versterken. De toenemende maatschappelijke druk op de welzijnssector om de effectiviteit van haar werk te demonstreren past goed in de trend van evidence-based werken die het afgelopen decennium is ingezet. Dit leidt tot tal van initiatieven om resultaten in kaart te brengen waarbij rijp en groen door elkaar lopen. Niet voor niks sprak Micha de Winter ook wel van het 'evidence-beest' (Winter 2013). Ook in de verantwoording van jongerenwerk is deze ontwikkeling zichtbaar. De vraag om resultaat mondt meer dan eens uit in controlezucht, wat dikwijls leidt tot registratie van tal van indicatoren waarover de vraag kan worden gesteld in hoeverre het daadwerkelijk inzicht verschaft in het effect van het jongerenwerk. This study reports on a practical experiment with a pedagogical training programme for youth from... more This study reports on a practical experiment with a pedagogical training programme for youth from disadvantaged neighbourhoods and the results for participating youth. The programme was implemented at seven youth work locations and was aimed at stimulating youth’s development towards self-conscious people who take responsibility in their neighbourhoods. After a short discussion of the programme’s theoretical foundations in social learning theory, resilience of youth at risk and the position of role models, this study provides indications for the programme’s encouraging function regarding competence development of participants and their social activation. These results offer interesting leads for a consolidation of youth policy directed at social integration of youth from disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

This article describes the goals, practices and underlying values of parents raising children in ... more This article describes the goals, practices and underlying values of parents raising children in the violent context of Brazilian slums. The results show that mothers act within a multivocal moral framework, combining 'street cultural logic' with 'middle-class' perspectives. Survival and a strong sense of morality are taught through both adaptation to and dissociation from the neighbourhood context. The analyses challenge the idea of a homogeneous 'street' culture in these communities and show that various cultural repertoires and multiple interconnected perspectives on morality are cultivated in response to violence. The study provides ways to interpret parental strategies to organise a moral counteroffensive as a lever for change.
