The title The development of narrative competence has a twofold meaning which mirrors the methodological and the substantive orientation of the study. First, narrative competence refers to the competence of a researcher to do narrative research. Second, this competence refers to the ability of people to understand and constitute themselves and the world – and importantly their healthy lives – through storytelling. The development of narrative psychology as a research methodology is presented in ten chapters distributed among four parts: 1) preparing, 2) exploring, 3) shaping and 4) harvesting. The last part Harvesting consists of one concluding chapter in which I evaluate the developmental process in this thesis. First, I describe what each part of the thesis has brought forth. I reflect on the original aims of narrative psychology,...

An introduction of characteristics and challenges of a rapidly growing research field. Narrative research. An introduction of characteristics and challenges of a rapidly growing research field. This article provides a brief overview of different narrative approaches in social scientific inquiry. First different definitions, methodological and epistemological approaches are introduced. Then, the emergence of a narrative approach in the social sciences is situated in historical and societal contexts. Finally, some challenges and potentials of developing this rapidly growing approach are identified. In particular the use of technological developments and the advancement of the relational turn in narrative inquiry are addressed. In the discussion, arguments are presented concerning a more methodical approach and attention is drawn to the risks of losing the humanistic potential of narrative research.

In this context our research created a space in which people living in countries in Europe, North and South America, Asia, and Africa were invited to imagine what the future could look likebeyond the pandemicby writing a Letter from the Future. In this paper we examine what these letters show about one particular relationship between the present and the future: a relationship of hope. In the context of major crises, and the complex experiences of loss they involve, the possibilities for hope becomes an urgent issue. We analyse a selection of responses from participants between 18 and 35 years-old, from Ecuador and Greece, to address two questions: (1) Do these letters express hope? (2) If so, in what ways is this hope political? Our answers to these questions have implications for understanding the nature, possibilities and politics of hope at times of crisis. They also have implications for futures studies: indicating the potential value of embedding the Letters from the Future method in a range of research contexts.

The case is the Greek Referendum of 2015. In the days preceding the Referendum, we collected via an online Survey 124 letters from the future from 99 potential Greek voters about a desired future after a Yes or No Referendum result. While the letters are quite divers in content, form and valence, the letters have in common that potential voters perceive the Referendum situation as ambiguous and uncertain. We analyse one letter in-depth to demonstrate how future identity construction operates to determine values relevant to guiding the present

Some researchers are calling mobile and wearable technology a cognitive prosthesis, intrinsically connected to the individual as if it was part of the body, similar to a physical prosthesis. And while several studies have been done on the phenomenology of receiving and wearing a physical prosthesis, it is unknown whether similar subjective experiences arise with technology. OBJECTIVE In one of the first qualitative studies to track wearables in a longitudinal investigation; we explore whether a wearable can be embodied similarly to a physical prosthesis. We hoped to gain insight and compare the phases of embodiment (i.e.: initial adjustment to the prosthesis) but also the psychological responses (i.e.: accepting the prosthesis as part of their body) between wearables and limb prostheses. This approach allowed us to find out whether this pattern...

Hence, psychotherapy benefits from a greater understanding of TCPR 1 , which is

Natural Language Processing is very suitable to automatically extract textual and structural features from narratives. Visualizing these features can help to explore patterns and shifts in text content and structure. In this study, streamgraphs are developed for different types of "Letters from the Future", an online mental health promotion instrument. The visualizations show differences between as well as within the different letter types, providing directions for future research in both the visualization of narrative structure and in the field of narrative psychology. The method presented here is not limited to "Letters from the Future", the current object of study, but can in fact be used to explore any digital or digitalized textual source, like books, speech transcripts or email conve...
