Hospitals, sanatoriums, preventoria, dispensaries, educational and research institutions, all of them promoted the use of furniture which at that moment was considered appropriate to their functions. Through the use of industrially produced objects, or designed from scratch for each building, health contexts played a particular significant role, which deserves a careful and transversal look. The processes of supplying furniture and equipment for premises built in the Lisbon region reveal not only practices and dynamics within State bodies, but also its most decisive actors. One of the names it is worth mentioning in this context is that of Jose Luis Amorim. Trained as an architect, working in public functions at certain periods, he has had a long and consistent career, namely for scientific research premises for health agencies for which he designed laboratories and work space...

To materialize the concept of global design, seeking formal coherence and a close functional and ideological articulation between all components, furniture design is fundamental as is the role of fine arts. Addressing the relationship with the context implies considering the links established with all other objects which form the school system in its several degrees (nursery, primary, secondary, superior) and scales (the neighbourhood, the city, the country).

These were objects designed for everyday use, in which technological possibilities and material sturdiness were fundamental concerns, and their designers were frequently little-known architects working within the civil service sphere; better-known names, in turn, are seldom credited with having created the pieces that furnished their own buildings. Yet state-commissioned furniture design can also speak of other aspects of this apparently ordinary, largely invisible side of many architects’ everyday work in government offices. In this brief visual essay, snapshots of a long-term research project recently concluded at the School of Architecture, Unive...

Prótese externa do membro inferior.
