Compensatory nistories attempted to fill in traditional history with information about women whose contributions were clearly on a scale acceptable to traditional historians, but who had not been included in their histories. 2 By contrast, the new women's his. tory, like the larger social history ·movement, demonstrates that traditional historiography is too narrow because it focuses upon elite power groups (the events precipitated by them and affecting them, and their responses to those eventS) to the exclusion of most of humanity. This narrowness results largely from the nature of traditional historiography, which is viewed as inappropriately limited from the perspective of the new social history. 8
