A solar photovoltaic (PV) coconut dehusking machine may become one important application of renew... more A solar photovoltaic (PV) coconut dehusking machine may become one important application of renewable energy especially in rural areas like in Sarawak. It will not only enhance the socio-economy in such areas but also indirectly reduce the risk of injuries from the process of dehusking coconuts manually. Thus the purpose of the study is to simulate the performance of the PV coconut dehusking machine by circuit modeling in Simulink and PVsyst software. Simulation results showed that it could match the rpm and torque required in the dry coconut shear test. Furthermore, when implemented, such a PV-powered machine is expected to offer better cost of ownership in the long term when compared to a dehusking machine that runs on fossil fuel based on the PVsyst software analysis.

The pico-hydro turbine is one hydropower scheme that has been widely used in off-grid settlements... more The pico-hydro turbine is one hydropower scheme that has been widely used in off-grid settlements around the globe. The implementation of this stand-alone system is chosen due to its cost-effectiveness and robustness in producing electricity, under low head conditions. This type of turbine is capable of producing power outputs of up to 5 kW. It is green energy technology that does not require water storage, and the initial set-up is very easy and straight forward. The propeller turbine is one of the most popular types of pico-hydro scheme that have been implemented extensively in remote areas, especially in Asia. However, little research has been conducted regarding the enhancement or development of pico-hydro turbines. This study will review previous research on the propeller hydro turbine, which mostly deals with low head and high flow rate conditions. The main components of the propeller turbine and the basic working principles of the run-of-river type will be highlighted. The conclusions will consider the main components in propeller hydro turbine systems which have been investigated by previous researchers to enhance the efficiency and performance. Suggestions for future studies on the application of the propeller hydro turbine will also be discussed.

Immediate feedback on errors is provided and the grading is done mostly by the computer. The time frame of problems solving can be set so that most students are able to redo the whole problems or selected one using different sets of the data to achieve mastery level. In courses where computer based problems solving was used, a definite improvement in the problem-solving skills of all the students was observed, while the effort for study very hard and grading was actually reduced. To change conventional learning method, some objectives are needed as a step for develop the interactive program, such as considering related platform for e-learning process, developing databases for thermodynamics property tables, deriving several properties of pure substances based thermodynamics equations, and developing interactive interface for self-help tutorial, on-line quizzes.

Off-grid settlements require efficient, reliable and cost-effective renewable energy as alternati... more Off-grid settlements require efficient, reliable and cost-effective renewable energy as alternative to the power supplied by diesel generator. Techno-economic analysis is required to find the optimum renewable energy system in the long run. This paper reviews the application of genetic algorithms in optimization of hybrid system consisting of pico hydro system, solar photovoltaic modules, diesel generator and battery sets. It is intended to maximize the use of renewable system while limiting the use of diesel generator. Daily load demand is assumed constant for derivation of annual load. Power derived from the hybrid should be able to meet the demand. Local weather data is used and analyzed to assess the technical and economic viability of utilizing the hybrid system. Optimization of the system will be based on the component sizing and the operational strategy. Genetic algorithms programming is used to evaluate both conditions in minimizing the total net present cost for optimum configuration. Manufacturer data for the hybrid components is used in calculation of sizing to represent actual power derivation. Several operation strategies will be considered while forming the vectors for optimum strategy. Random selection of sizing and strategy is used to initiate the solution for the problem which will have the lowest total net present cost. Sensitivity analysis is also performed to optimize the system at different conditions.

Hybrid energy systems are pollution free, takes low cost and less gestation period, user and social friendly. Such systems are important sources of energy for shops, schools, and clinics in village communities especially in remote areas. Hybrid systems can provide electricity at a comparatively economic price in many remote areas. This paper presents a method to jointly determine the sizing and operation control of hybrid energy systems. The model, PV wind hydro and biomass hybrid system connects to grid. The system configuration of the hybrid is derived based on a theoretical domestic load at a typical location and local solar radiation, wind and water flow rate data and biomass availability. The hybrid energy system is proposed for 10 of teacher’s houses of Industrial Training Institute, Mersing. It is predicted 10 kW load consumption per house.
