We draw on our ongoing ethnographic study of a fifth-grade classroom to illustrate what happens when policies get through the classroom door. Through this analysis, we illustrate how policies constrained the bilingual teacher's ability to make learning opportunities available to her linguistically diverse students in 1998-99.

The study is guided by one broad research question: How do Latino male bilingual teachers negotiate their identities in a gendered profession? Specifically the study addresses: What spaces for authoring gender identities do Latino male teachers provide in elementary schools? Social practice theory of self and identity was used to identify two themes.
The first theme highlights the hegemonic masculinities that men were asked to adopt in elementary schools. The second theme illustrates how Latino teachers presented their students with a space to question rigid gendered positions and imagine more flexible boundaries for gender expression via children’s literature.

The underlying assumption is that English language proficiency is a prerequisite for subject matter learning. Research shows this is a misconception. The qualitative research project described in this article investigated how a high school social studies teacher integrated language and content and how the newcomer students were able to demonstrate their understandings. Findings showed that the practice of historical inquiry through primary sources and document-based questions assisted students in developing English, academic vocabulary, and academic concepts in the learning of American history. In the spring of 2010, when the teacher deviated fromthe state's official curriculumthrough the use of digitized primary sources, notions of agency, empathy, and moral judgment played a significant role in the students' writings and use of historical reasoning. However, despite the use of historical inquiry and digitized primary sources, when there was tighter adherence to teaching the mandated curriculum in spring 2012, student expression and development of historical agency, empathy, and moral judgment was diminished or absent.

An understanding of the breadth and significance of this problem and its impact on health outcomes is now clear. Interventions and strategies for effectively working with patients with limited literacy must be developed and evaluated. An agenda for medical and public health workers, health educators, and researchers is suggested.

Conventional wisdom implies that teachers of color are native informants of these lived experiences; however, teacher educators should create opportunities for all teacher candidates to challenge prevalent myths about

The students built historical narratives that deliberately addressed oft-ignored histories of Communities of Color. The analysis argues however that building counter narratives through traditional evidentiary trails ignores the fundamental experiences and epistemological frameworks of Latinas. Framing such pedagogies with LatCrit allows for those episte-mologies that influence Latinas' opposition to majoritarian tales and creation of counter stories.
