UX research: what theoretical roots do we build on — if any?.

Theories behind UX Research and How They Are Used in Practice

in UX research?” Overall, 122 single items from about
70 participants were collected, which corroborates the
relevance of and interest in this topic. Whilst the
theoretical foundations for UX research are not yet
established, those responses can serve as candidate
resources for setting the theoretical directions. A
primary conclusion from the SIG discussion is that the
CHI community needs theories in UX research and
practice. A major contribution of the workshop will be
to clarify the applicability and transferability of different
theories, theoretical foundations, concepts in informing
UX design and evaluation in both research and practice.
In particular we will look into theories that have already
been applied in practice.

need for a theoretical discussion around UX research
and practice. Although there is a good coverage of
methodological and design related topics in the HCI
literature, there is still a lack of theoretical focus in the
rapidly increasing work on user experience (UX). We
analyzed 122 individual items on theories collected in a
CHI’11 special interest group session on UX theories
and theoretical frameworks. The data set was filtered
and categorized in several iterations, resulting in 56
items distributed over 7 major theory categories and
related to 9 relevant disciplines. The categories are an
initial mapping of the field and point towards the
directions for further conceptual and theoretical
clarification. Our results help to explore the multidisciplinary
nature of UX and to build a more solid
foundation for UX research and practice.

These models address the key issues of UX: its subjective, highly situated and dynamic nature, as well as the pragmatic and hedonic factors leading to UX. At the same time, industry is adopting the UX term but the practices

Mobile and ubiquitous systems create opportunities for new kinds of interactivity in public space... more Mobile and ubiquitous systems create opportunities for new kinds of interactivity in public spaces. Examples of human-technology interactions in public spaces include interactive displays on different scales; mobile systems enabling projection in public environments; smart interactive and reactive objects; tangible interfaces; and public media arts. Human-system and mediated human-human interactions become public and visible to the people around the same space. This creates many possibilities and challenges for designing the user experience that arise primarily from the social and physical context. This workshop will bring together researchers, designers, practitioners and media artists to discuss elements and viewpoints of such new forms of experiences. The results of the workshop will be an "experience design space" and a research agenda for experiences with interactive systems used in public spaces.

An exploratory study of user-generated spatial gestures with social mobile devices

Social Devices promote proxemic interactions between people and can act as enablers of users' social contacts. Various modalities are used to support natural interactions between users and Social Devices. We present an explorative study of spatial gestures that could support interactions with Social Devices. Our aim was to find out what kind of gestures users would like to use for different types of actions. Ten pairs participated in a laboratory study in which they went through three scenarios of Social Devices. The participants were asked to generate gestures that they would find suitable for user actions within the scenarios. In this paper, we present the found gesture types and their fit to various user actions. Our results show that Scan, Swing, Nod and Turn the screen down are potential spatial gestures for intuitive use of Social Devices. User feedback about their preferences of using spatial gestures indicates issues of social acceptance.
Communication technology for human-dog interaction

Collective Content as a Facilitator of Community Interaction: A User Study of Four Close-Knit Communities

The content is jointly used for maintaining relationships and constructing common memories and experiences. Thus, it is very collective by nature. However, few studies have focused on the ways in which communities interact with such collective content. We conducted a field study on how four communities create,

User Experience (UX) research focusing on the emotional and experiential aspects of system usage ... more User Experience (UX) research focusing on the emotional and experiential aspects of system usage is of highly recognized relevance for the CHI community. A lot of work has been conducted with different goals: investigating a common definition and understanding of UX, creating appropriate concepts, frameworks and models for supporting design and development processes, and developing methods and techniques for evaluating UX. However, there is still a lack of in-depth discussions on the theoretical roots and foundations for all of these UX activities in academia and industry. In this SIG we will explore the state of the art in the theory of UX research in order to lay the fundament for further advancements of the UX field. We will also discuss how the theoretical viewpoints can benefit, and be influenced by the UX practitioners' work.

A multitude of methods for UX design and evaluation exist, but a clear overview of the current state of the available UX evaluation methods is missing. This is partly due to a lack of agreement on the essential characteristics of UX. In this paper, we present the results of our multi-year effort of collecting UX evaluation methods from academia and industry with different approaches such as literature review, workshops, Special Interest Groups sessions and an online survey. We have collected 96 methods and analyzed them, among other criteria, based on the product development phase and the studied period of experience. Our analysis reveals development needs for UX evaluation methods, such as early-stage methods, methods for social and collaborative UX evaluation, establishing practicability and scientific quality, and a deeper understanding of UX.

Although the term UX is widely used, the methods and tools for evaluating UX are still inadequate. This SIG session collects information and experiences about UX evaluation methods used in both academia and industry, discusses the pros and cons of each method, and ideates on how to improve the methods.

Current design practices aim at ensuring a generally pleasurable or satisfying UX. However, approaches and methods for designing for specific experiences are still scarce. This paper addresses experience-driven design (EDD) by reflecting upon a study where playful experiences (PLEX) were utilized as design targets in a practical design assignment of a post-graduate seminar. The outcomes and learning experiences imply that utilizing PLEX as target experiences in the EDD approach is a sound way to provide design inspiration and guidance, and help refining early design ideas. The pre-defined playful experiences were considered as fruitful starting points for brainstorming as well as constant reminders of the rationale of the design. The paper concludes with reflections on applying EDD and four roles in which it was found beneficial:

Although UX is a widely adopted term in industry, the tools for evaluating UX in product development are still inadequate. Based on ...
