Using text clustering to predict defect resolution time: a conceptual replication and an evaluation of prediction accuracy

When a defect is reported, appropriate resources must be allocated to analyze and resolve the defect. An important issue in resource allocation is the estimation of Defect Resolution Time (DRT). Prior research has considered different approaches for DRT prediction exploiting information retrieval techniques and similarity in textual defect descriptions. In this article, we investigate the potential of text clustering for DRT prediction. We build on a study published by Raja (2013) which demonstrated that clusters of similar defect reports had statistically significant differences in DRT. Raja’s study also suggested that this difference between clusters could be used for DRT prediction. Our aims are twofold: First, to conceptually replicate Raja’s study and to assess the repeatability of its results in different settings; Second, to investigate the potential of textual clustering of issue reports for DRT prediction with focus on accuracy. Using different data sets and a different text mining tool and clustering technique, we first conduct an independent replication of the original study. Then we design a fully automated prediction method based on clustering with a simulated test scenario to check the accuracy of our method. The results of our independent replication are comparable to those of the original study and we confirm the initial findings regarding significant differences in DRT between clusters of defect reports. However, the simulated test scenario used to assess our prediction method yields poor results in terms of DRT prediction accuracy. Although our replication confirms the main finding from the original study, our attempt to use text clustering as the basis for DRT prediction did not achieve practically useful levels of accuracy.

It consists of a generic, implementation independent description of the components and a reference implementation using the MATLAB® / Simulink® environment. By providing ready-to-use building blocks for typical functionality, the library should facilitate and ease the use of simulation to analyze software engineering issues. The goals are to provide a collection of reusable components within an open and evolvable framework to help practitioners develop simulation models faster and enable researchers to implement complex modeling and simulation tasks. Currently, the library contains more than thirty components. It can be used under the LPGL license. The paper presents the current status of SimSWE to encourage its use and participation within the research community.

In this chapter we describe how the socio-technical systems (STS) approach has been applied to th... more In this chapter we describe how the socio-technical systems (STS) approach has been applied to the software process, as well as attempts that have been made to simulate and model the process as a whole. We also outline previous attempts to use socio-technical criteria and guidelines in order to make improvements to the process of constructing software. We first provide a broad outline of the STS approach followed by a number of examples drawn from the areas of COTS-based selection, the People Capability Maturity Model (P-CMM), competency programmes and process simulation. We conclude the chapter with a set of future research issues that are most likely to occupy researchers in the coming years. These issues are drawn partly from the theoretical literature within software engineering, as well as recent developments within industrial practice.

Defining, prioritizing, and selecting requirements are problems of tremendous importance. In this... more Defining, prioritizing, and selecting requirements are problems of tremendous importance. In this paper, a new approach called Quantitative WinWin for decision support in requirements negotiation is studied. The difference to Boehm's WinWin groupware-based negotiation support is the inclusion of quantitative methods as a backbone for better and more objective decisions. Like Boehm's original WinWin, Quantitative WinWin uses an iterative approach, with the aim to increase knowledge about the requirements during each iteration. The novelty of the presented idea is three-fold. Firstly, it uses the Analytical Hierarchy Process for a stepwise determination of the stakeholders' preferences in quantitative terms. Secondly, these results are combined with methods for early effort estimation, in our case using the simulation prototype GENSIM, to evaluate the feasibility of alternative requirements subsets in terms of their related implementation efforts. Thirdly, it reflects the increasing knowledge gained about the requirements during each iteration, in a similar way as it is done in Boehm's spiral model for software development. As main result, quantitative WinWin offers decision support for selecting the most appropriate requirements based on the preferences of the stakeholders, the business value of requirements and a given maximum development effort.
