The present work presents a Gothic novel that was opposed to the Radcliffean model in that it no ... more The present work presents a Gothic novel that was opposed to the Radcliffean model in that it no longer displayed interest in sensibility, poetic realism, or explained supernatural. The problem of guilt, magic, taboo, and superstition are elements that prove the genre’s awareness of the epistemological moment it belongs to. The method of work consists in a stylistic analysis (based on the analysis of the figures of speech and on componential analysis where cases allow and it was considered relevant) of the elements through which Mathew Gregory Lewis creates a Gothic atmosphere full of suspense, horror, and dread. Beside the atmosphere itself, the element through which Lewis altered the Gothic was the expression of masculine anxiety in the use of gender reversal or transvertism. Our work is intended to emphasize the range of extracurricular educational offers and pinpoint the methods of teaching English as a second language within a borderline educational activity: the workshop. The deliberate and meaningful choice of content, ambience and methods represent important elements meant to grant the success of such types of activities.

After locating literary Gothicism and presenting some general features shared by the Gothic novels, attention will be paid to the atmosphere, the stock features, narrative techniques, themes and symbols present in such type of writings. A special place is played by the language of terror that generates fear, awe, suspense, emotion, excitement, ontological uncertainty. As far as the Gothic aesthetics is concerned, the illustrative examples are meant to certify once more the place of the Gothic novel among the texts embodying and evoking cultural anxieties.

The method of work consists in stylistic and semiotic analysis. By using such methods the author will emphasize the set of values chosen by the advertisers in order to convey the necessary mental atmosphere. Such an atmosphere is necessary in order to seduce the buyers. The personalities from sports and the values they are associated to are important elements highlighted by the present work. Last but not least, the element that links the message from the sport context to the value of the product is of vital importance for the future customers, irrespective of the fat that they realize it or not while watching the commercials..
