moreThe emergence of bulletized news articles, otherwise known as listicles, because of media digitization, has posed a challenge to traditional journalism. While media practitioners and/or scholars (Busch, 2014; Gunelius, 2014; Kiss, 2014; Konnikova, 2013; Matrix, 2015; Tandoc & Jenkins, 2015a) contend that listicles have boosted online presence and readability, others (Birthisel, 2014; Dodson, 2016; Dvorkin, 2016; Lack, 2017; Potthast, Kӧpsel, Stein, & Hagen, 2016) cite the abstraction and degradation of journalistic content. The lack of research on listicles, moreover, can only add to the lack of concordance. Thus, the exploratory study aimed to determine whether—and how—listicles, in accordance to Pierre Bourdieu’s (1993, 1998, 2005) concepts, preserve and/or transform the journalistic field (as cited in Tandoc & Jenkins, 2015b), specifically the news structure. Based on the analysis of the research materials, listicles merely preserve the journalistic field as only 17 out of 269 print articles from the 2014 and 2015 issues of the Philippine Daily Inquirer—derived from the hypertext links of 98 #InquirerSeven listicles—used such format. In terms of story shapes, standalone listicles—unlike those used as a supplement to the main story—naturally do not adhere to the inverted pyramid format, answering the 5Ws and 1H through the use of gold coins. News values found in listicles are likewise few, with standalone and supplementary listicles having an average of 5 and 7, respectively. This finding is a stark contrast to the results of the interviews in which 33 out of 36 respondents held that listicles subscribe to both field preservation and transformation. Ultimately, the study’s threefold analysis affirmed the disparity between the media and audiences’ perception of listicles, positioning that such journalistic style is still venturing both on its theoretical and practical viability in the contemporary media landscape.
