This paper presents the pre-service
teachers’ learning of didactics and
language teaching methodologies during
their participation in a virtual learning
community. Three main concepts were
defined: Virtual Learning Communities
(VLCs), reflective practice, and learning

from a sociocultural perspective. 25 pre-
service teachers from a bachelor’s

degree in language teaching participated

in the VLC. A focus group and the pre-
service teacher’s reflection in the VLC

were used to collect information. The
results show pre- service learned to
reflect on and use effective teaching
materials; to select, adapt and combine
language teaching methodologies, and to
criticize themselves, their lessons plan,
and their performance in order to improve
their teaching practice.

En el proceso de conformación del Instituto de Psicología de la salud, como se consigna en el documento fundacional del mismo, se incluye el Programa Desarrollo Psicológico como una de las cuatro propuestas programáticas que daban sustento al mismo. En la actualidad, fruto de revisiones y ajustes propios de las dinámicas de consolidación institucional, ampliamos la denominación y el concepto e incluimos también Psicología Evolutiva, haciendo justicia a los contenidos y problemas que pretendemos abordar. La práctica académica y profesional de la Psicología Evolutiva y el Desarrollo Psicológico es de una gran vastedad y heterogeneidad, por lo que es necesario posicionarse desde referentes y paradigmas ontológicos, epistemológicos y metodológicos pertinentes y contundentes.

Educational Data Mining is an emerging research field dealing with the finding of hidden patterns in educational data. So far, the research has been focused on the empirical data obtained through various data mining techniques and not necessarily on the actual classroom implications and the knowledge that can be derived from the mined data. In order to expand the body of knowledge about the pedagogical act, an epistemological framework is needed to better understand the nature of knowledge and so avoiding the merely empiro-positivist approach to educational data mining research. After presenting the most common epistemological approach, this paper proposes alternative approaches to construct knowledge as options to develop the research field.

/Resumen Podcasting is a term introduced through the use of Apple Computer, Inc.'s iPod, a term which denotes how a portable audio player can be used to download audio files, mostly MP3s, and be heard at the user's convenience. Initially such an operation was intended for entertainment; however, it has proven itself to be an important tool in the field of education as well. The research at hand constitutes a preliminary study for exploring the educational potential of podcasting and for presenting the basic technical and pedagogical skills needed for its implementation. This qualitative research uses as its instruments direct observation and informal interviews of students. The project was carried out with 25 students who were looking at a chemistry unit on aromatic compounds and it included the use of four podcasts. Even though the current study is taken from a science class, the applications of this technology can be useful in other subjects, particularly languages and social sciences. Resumen Los objetivos centrales de este trabajo son presentar una estrategia para la gestión de datos administrativos y académicos a través de un sistema integrado BILA de Inteligencia de Negocios (Business Intelligence, BI) y Analítica del Aprendizaje (Learning Analytics, LA) y dar a conocer los primeros resultados de tal integración como soporte empírico a la iniciativa. Los resultados primarios indican que el sistema integrado permite a las instituciones educativas comprender a mayor profundidad los fenómenos administrativos, sus potenciales relaciones con los fenómenos académicos y llevar a cabo un proceso más informado para la toma de decisiones institucionales. La implementación del modelo se realiza en un colegio internacional americano en Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The objectives of this paper include presenting a strategy for the management of administrative and academic data through an integrated BILA system of Business Intelligence (BI) and Learning Analytics (LA) and showing the preliminary results of such integration as empirical support to the initiative. The primary results indicate that the integrated system allows educational institutions to understand in greater depth the administrative phenomena, their potential relationships with the academic ones and to carry out a more informed process for institutional decision making. The model is being implemented in an American international school in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. This paper shows how an American International School in Vietnam has been using data and Learning Analytics to find out about students' learning from their assessments and how they use these findings to improve, among other areas, the reading skills of their mostly English as an Additional Language (EAL) student population. The source of data comes primarily from a Computer Adaptive Testing platform, commonly known as the MAP Growth test, which provides information about Math and Reading skills for each particular student. The data provided is transformed and presented to educational stakeholders through visualizations created in specialized software in order to dig into the data and answer the pedagogical questions emerged from teachers and administrators. This process involves a new field known as Learning Analytics and Visual Data Mining in order to find new information not usually evident in school datasets.
