Effects of stingless bee and honey bee propolis on four species of bacteria

We examined the antibacterial activities of several types of propolis, including Africanized hone... more We examined the antibacterial activities of several types of propolis, including Africanized honey bee green propolis and propolis produced by meliponini bees. The antibacterial activity of green propolis against Micrococcus luteus and Staphylococcus aureus was superior to that of Melipona quadrifasciata and Scaptotrigona sp propolis. Only two samples of propolis (green propolis and Scaptotrigona sp propolis) were efficient against Escherichia coli. Melipona quadrifasciata propolis was better than green propolis and Scaptotrigona sp propolis against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We concluded that these resins have potential for human and veterinary medicine.

Agriculture is heavily reliant on insects for food production. In fact, at least a third of all c... more Agriculture is heavily reliant on insects for food production. In fact, at least a third of all crops rely on pollination (Klein et al., 2007). Paradoxically, as agriculture becomes more intensive and the need for pollinators increases, modern agricultural practices also reduce bee populations through application of pesticides and intensive land use (Klein et al., 2007; Aizen and Harder, 2009; Gallai et al., 2009). This increased demand and concurrent declining bee health have led to a 'pollination crisis' (Holden, 2006; Goulson et al., 2015). Bee diseases and pests have become a major limiting factor in the effort to provide the large numbers of strong honey bee colonies that are now required, greatly increasing costs for beekeepers and hive rental fees for farmers (Genersch, 2010; Traynor et al., 2020). Besides honey bees, there are over 20,000 other bee species (Engel et al., 2020). The non-Apis bees are often wonderfully diverse in form and function, worthy of conservation and preservation in their own right. For example, the re-discovery of Wallace's Giant Bee, Megachile pluto, or the Dodo of the bee world, provides new challenges for conservation (Vereecken, 2018). The contribution of many non-Apis bees to pollination is substantial, though often much less appreciated. Additionally, the interaction of other bee species and honey bees can have synergistic benefits for pollination services, resulting in higher fruit-set and productivity (Brittain et al., 2013). In this article we briefly review the major stressors and health issues for bees. Improving the protection and health of honey bees, and the many thousands of other bee species, is a major global challenge and is the goal for this journal section.

Mean weights of infested bees upon emergence as adults were 6• 3% to 25% less than for healthy bees. Mean % weight loss was correlated at a high level of significance with the number of mites in the cell. Only 6% of infested bees showed obvious physical deformation in the form of wing damage.

Taking their cue from the bees, man has been harvesting and using this product for thousands of years, across many civilizations, stimulated by empirical knowledge concerning its efficacy as a medically useful product (Berretta et al., 2020). The most common type of propolis extract is hydroethanolic. However, there is considerable demand for ethanol-free propolis presentations, including stable powder forms. Three propolis extract formulations were developed and investigated for chemical composition and antioxidant and antimicrobial activity: polar propolis fraction (PPF), soluble propolis dry extract (PSDE), and microencapsulated propolis extract (MPE). The different technologies used to produce the extracts affected their physical appearance, chemical profile, and biological activity. PPF was found to contain mainly caffeic and p-Coumaric acid, while PSDE and MPE showed a chemical fingerprint closer to the original green propolis hydroalcoholic extract used. Statement of the Problem: Natural products have attracted interest as an alternative to synthetic... more Statement of the Problem: Natural products have attracted interest as an alternative to synthetic medications for the treatment of oral diseases due to their efficacy and safety. Propolis and pomegranate extracts have both demonstrated efficacy for the treatment of denture stomatitis. However, use of the two compounds together has not been tested for this purpose. Purpose: A comparison was made of the efficacy of a commercially available propolis-pomegranate buccal spray formulation for the treatment of denture stomatitis, compared with miconazole gel, based on stomatitis lesions and Candida spp. concentrations in mouth rinses. Materials and Method: This was an experimental study, characterized as an open-label, parallel twoarmed, non-inferiority randomized clinical trial. Forty elderly adults aged ≥ 60 years with denture stomatitis were randomly allocated to two groups. The patients applied a buccal spray containing 0.5% propolis and 0.9% pomegranate extracts or 2% miconazole gel, a standard treatment recommended in Brazil, to the inner surface of their dentures three times a day for 14 days. They were examined at days 1, 7, 14 and stomatitis lesions were categorized according to Newton's score. Mouth rinses were made with saline solution at days 1 and 14 and then assessed for Candida spp. Results: Both treatments reduced the Newton's score, with clinical cure rates of 75 and 40% for the miconazole and propolis-pomegranate groups, respectively. The Candida concentrations in the mouth rinse decreased significantly only in the miconazole group. Conclusion: The propolis-pomegranate spray was less effective than the miconazole treatment. However, clinical improvement was also observed in patients treated with the propolis-pomegranate buccal spray.
