
Bento Mota
Currently, Bento Machado Mota is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies - Villa I Tatti, in Florence. He previously served as a Short-Term Fellow at the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University. He holds a PhD in Social History from the University of São Paulo (Brazil) and a Master's degree in Social History from the Federal University of Fluminense (Brazil). Additionally, he completed postgraduate studies in the History and Anthropology of Religions at ENAH (Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia - Mexico).
He has authored articles and presented at conferences on various topics, including the Renaissance, atheism, free will, ignorance, Indigenous history, Chinese history, and early modern theology. His doctoral dissertation, titled "Altíssima ignorância: a ignorância invencível e os debates europeus e sul-americanos sobre a salvação dos indígenas brasileiros a partir de Antônio Vieira (1535-1719)" ("The Highest Ignorance: Invincible Ignorance and the European and South American Debates on the Salvation of Brazil's Indigenous Peoples Based on Antônio Vieira (1535–1719)"), examined key theological debates regarding Indigenous peoples' salvation. His research focuses include:; Missionary-Indigenous relations in the Americas; Ethnology of the South American lowlands; Iconology; Philosophy and Theology of the Early Modern period; Jesuit Studies; Latin American History; Brazilian Colonial History; Scholastic Thought and Moral Probabilism;
Legal History and Slavery Studies; Confucianism; Renaissance Studies and Philosophy and History of Religions.
