Alan Karass
I am the Dean for Information Services and Director of Nimitz Library at the US Naval Academy (Annapolis, MD). As an ethnomusicologist, my research focuses on the relationship between politics, identity, and music festivals in Tunisia. I contributed a chapter entitled “Identity, Music, and Festivity in Southern Tunisia” to Oxford University Press’s Handbook of Musical Identities.
As a founding member of the ensemble FloraMusica, I am an active recorder player. I served as President of the American Recorder Society from 2002 to 2006. I have also performed on oud with the Tufts Takht and have studied with John Berberian (USA), Nabil Ata (USA), Ramses Gharsallah (Tunisia), and Youssef Abdelmalek (Tunisia).
