A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske

A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske was great. As Robin gets a new public service appointment by mistake, he discovers the existence of British magic.

This is more or less the m/m version of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. The characters were interesting and the writing was lovely, but there was too much sex for my taste.

Note that the sequel will be f/f. I like it when authors switch things up.

Final reminder that I am moving to Dreamwidth. I won't be crossposting here any more. I hope to see you there.

The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure

The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure was a lot of fun! It's a Korean movie available on Netflix. It's technically a sequel, but it's entirely watchable on its own.

Even though most of the characters were men, the captain was a woman. <3

The penguins were cute and funny.

Here's a fairly recent Dreamwidth friending meme. Come join us!

Reminder that I am moving to Dreamwidth.

Dreamwidth

I've finally created a Dreamwidth. I'm going to post on both accounts for a transition period.
A Mage's Guide to Human Familiars by AJ Sherwood was fun. Bel is part demon, so he needs a human familiar... or maybe two.

This is m/m/m polyamory. There's a lot of light-hearted humour, but one of the characters (Nico) is a bit of a caricature because of it. I enjoyed the book, but keep it for when you're not in the mood for multi-layered characters.

Lost Tomb Reboot

The c-drama Lost Tomb Reboot, aka Reunion: The Sound of Providence, was great. It's basically a Tomb Raider show, which is something we don't have on Western television.

I watched it for the BL vibes, but don't expect too much. They're mostly in the first half of Season 1 and at Untamed level, not at Word of Honor level. Though Pangzi has a few lines where he basically talks of Wu Xie and Xiaoge like they're an established couple. <3 I was told that Lost Tomb 3, aka Ultimate Note, was gayer, so maybe I'll watch it at some point, but I can't imagine these characters being played by other actors for now. I like that they're closer to my age in LTR.

Season 1 is available legally and for free on Viki. Season 2 is on iQiyi, legally, but not for free. Also, have a badass Xiaoge fanvid!

All Roads Lead to This by Kay Claire

All Roads Lead to This by Kay Claire was great. Two childhood friends who now work together at a plant shop go on a road trip through South Africa.

This is major m/m, where one of the guys is trans. There's also a non-binary minor character.

This book mentions Covid safety measures, which I liked, but heads up in case you want to avoid the topic entirely.

----------

I have started playing Wordle, both in English and in French. Somehow I find it harder in French. lol

Trailer Park Trickster by David Slayton

Trailer Park Trickster by David Slayton was awesome. It's the sequel to White Trash Warlock.

The popular m/m story involving reapers right now is probably Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune, but I like this series better. The characters feel more real, more down-to-earth, and the pacing is stronger.

Uncharted

Uncharted was a lot of fun! I love treasure hunts full of obscure clues.

The male actors are famous, but it was also nice to see Tati Gabrielle (Prudence in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Sophia Ali (Fatin in The Wilds) on the big screen.

Just Ash by Sol Santana

Just Ash by Sol Santana was excellent. Ash is an intersex boy. When his schoolmates find out, things get tough for him.

The first half of the book was hard to read. It gets to the point where his mother sends him to a private school and forces him to present as a girl!!! (She's also homophobic and racist...)

The second half is the comfort to the first half's hurt. It feels really good to see Ash standing for himself and finding more allies.

Sol Santana is an intersex author.

The Grimrose Girls by Laura Pohl

The Grimrose Girls by Laura Pohl was great. After the death of their high school friend, four girls find out that they're cursed like fairytale princesses.

I'm not big on "X meets Y" pitches, but "Once Upon a Time meets Pretty Little Liars" works very well for this YA novel. It's going to be a duology and I'm curious where the author will go with the second book.

There's major f/f where one of them is trans, as well as an aroace girl and a biromantic demisexual girl.

----------

I have completed Korean Duolingo. \o/ The video game aspect was fun, but it feels good to be back on a book with full dialogues to study.

Indie Bites 5

The short story magazine Indie Bites 5 is now out. This issue's themes are Ghosts & Guilds.

It's available for free here.

Deception by Naomi Aoki + Law School

In Deception by Naomi Aoki, a Nagoya police detective went undercover and ended up working for a yakuza boss. Now, his new police partner might also have ties with the yakuza.

Be gay, do crime! That's not what I usually go for, but it was well done, except for some grammar mistakes.

There's major m/m/f.

----------

Law School was an excellent k-drama. It's a murder mystery in the same vein as How To Get Away With Murder.

Professor Yang's competence was very sexy. I learnt some law vocab definitely above my current beginner status. lol

It's available on Netflix, at least in France.
Cute Mutants Vol. 5: Galaxy Brain by SJ Whitby is the next-level conclusion to the Cute Mutants novel series.

If you love X-Men and want a lot of sapphic and trans/enby representation, this is the series for you. And there's more to come in this universe. I can't wait!
Lunar New Love by Ophelia Silk was very lovely. Minh and Cass must fake-date for Vietnamese New Year.

The story takes place in France, in Orléans and Paris to be specific, so of course I had to read it. It has a beautiful writing style.

Minh is agender (they/them) and Cass is genderfluid (either Cassandra, she/her, or Apollo, he/him). It's still very rare to encounter nb/nb stories.

----------

Salaryman's Club is a new badminton anime. For once, it's about adults, so that should be extra interesting.

It's available legally and for free on Crunchyroll.

A Broken Woman by Dharma Kelleher

A Broken Woman by Dharma Kelleher was excellent. It's the third book in the Jinx Ballou, Bounty Hunter series. I'm now up-to-date, as I started with Book 4, TERF Wars.

Jinx is a trans woman. She's usually in a relationship with a man, but in this tome, she dates a woman. The secondary characters are diverse as well.

Content warnings: [Spoilerish]transphobia, alcoholism

Strong Wine by AJ Demas

Strong Wine by AJ Demas was simply wonderful. It's the final book in the Sword Dance trilogy.

Once again, this tome mixes intrigue (a murder mystery) and domesticity shenanigans (this time because of Damiskos' parents). I love these characters dearly and I am going to miss them.

Varazda is genderfluid. There's major m/nb and minor f/f, as well as a young woman probably on the autism spectrum.

----------

LGBT books with less than 400 Goodreads ratings Part 4 (links to the first 3 parts are at the beginning of the post)
Netflix's Cheer Season 2 was great, but not as good as S1. The teams faced a lot of issues, including Covid, of course.

Still, cheerleading is such an incredible sport to watch. I also like the focus on the athletes' friendships and the found family feel.

----------

Royal Rescue by A. Alex Logan was a lot of fun. All royal teens must choose to be either a rescuer or a rescuee in order to find a spouse. But Prince Gerald is not interested in getting married.

Princes, princesses and princexes (non-binary royals) can choose either role and marry someone of any gender. Gerald is aroace and there is an mlm queerplatonic relationship.

Some Faraway Place by Lauren Shippen

Some Faraway Place by Lauren Shippen was great. It's the third and final tome of the Bright Sessions novels. They're based on a podcast about superpowered people going to therapy, but I don't listen to it. You can definitely read the books on their own.

Book 3 focuses on new characters, but also crosses over with the leads of Books 1 and 2. I actually could have done with less Damien, because the plot was getting a bit repetitive.

There's major f/f and mentions of m/m.
