Various structural factors, such as the creation of a mega-bureaucracy, co-equal service branches, and a fixation with tactics, have contributed to the decline in numbers of educated and broadened leaders in the molds of Generals Pershing, MacArthur, and Eisenhower. The Army’s strategic performance since the Korean War is symptomatic of this cultural decline.

Instead, I argue that a return to a Clausewitzian tradition would better serve Western forces fighting ISIS.

Riots, Hurricane Katrina, and the Union occupation of Civil War Texas to examine how the military, particularly the Army, would respond to a zombie invasion. Most importantly, I had a blast (no pun intended) writing it.

American Use of Landpower Since 9/11 Conference

His On Strategy: The Vietnam War in Context (1982) was a controversial landmark study of the use of military force, particularly landpower. In the spirit of On Strategy, the War College now seeks to examine the American use of landpower since the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 through multiple strategic perspectives.
There are many possible paper topics associated with strategic landpower. They include: the evolving nature of war; strategic analysis of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom; perspectives of regional combatant commands and theater armies; landpower issues associated with the reserve components and institutional army; ground force modernization and transformation; civil-military relations; roles of the interagency and non-governmental organizations; and law and ethics of war. This is far from an exhaustive list, and the War College welcomes all serious proposals on relevant topics.

Rahe's volume, in his projected trilogy dedicated to "diplomacy and war" of classical Sparta, is richly detailed and elegantly written, yet the work fails to encompass the title, losing its theme in the densely detailed text. (xv) The Spartans could not easily project power given the inherently limited demographic base of its slavocracy, which its complex oligarchy had established in the southern Peloponnese. Yet Sparta risked irreplaceable Spartiate casualties when giving battle to suppress, in succession, the neighboring Argives, the invading Persians (and their Greek allies), the Athenians, and the Thebans. Spartan "grand strategy," as Rahe would have it, succeeded over the better part of three centuries before collapsing under its flawed demographic calculus, while it was a necessity to the "freedom" of the Greek poleis. His tome is also requisite, but based on an apparatus of an underdeveloped strategic theme.
