Digital social networks have attracted the attention of a growing number of specialists. The use ... more Digital social networks have attracted the attention of a growing number of specialists. The use of digital tools such as Facebook, Twitter and Youtube to express sociopolitical demands or to perform protest actions has become a central issue for social science today. However, few studies analyse the factors behind this phenomenon using explanatory models based on analytical sociology and rational action. In this paper, we take steps in this direction and study the sociopolitical use of social networks based on a methodological individualism model. Through an analysis of structural equations we analyse how the individual and social factors involved in the use of the social networks to " do " politics relate to one another. We conclude that attitudes towards the political possibilities of the Internet constitute an essential explanatory factor for this kind of political action.

There are pro-participatory groups (the young, non-voters, left-wing voters, residents in mid-sized cities, etc.), while other groups are less enthusiastic (right-wing voters). In this study we address social representations of participatory democracy and how they are embedded in the political understandings of different groups. The study is based on 16 focus-groups conducted between 2011 and 2013 in Spain. We identify four major visions among the participants: those who prefer a complex deliberative system for citizen participation, those who want more referenda and other expressive channels, those who think it is an unattainable reform, and those who reject these types of political processes.

Consumo de informação política e participação digital em blogs de conteúdo sociopolítico. Este ar... more Consumo de informação política e participação digital em blogs de conteúdo sociopolítico. Este artigo faz parte de um conjunto de trabalhos que visam conhecer os fatores que determinam a participação digital em Espanha. Neste estudo, interessamo-nos pela forma através da qual o consumo de informação política afeta um tipo concreto de prática política digital: a participação em blogs políticos e sociais. Partindo de um inquérito do cis (ref. 2736), reunimos um conjunto amplo e heterogéneo de formas de aceder à informação política. Aplicámos uma análise fatorial para ordenar este conjunto de variáveis e realizámos uma análise de regressão, tomando os fatores resultantes da análise anterior como variáveis independentes e, como dependente, a participação em blogs políticos e sociais. Com isto pretendíamos averiguar que tipo de informação nos permite predizer melhor este tipo de comportamento político digital. ABSTRACT This paper summarises a study that analyses the surveys of different data bank containin... more ABSTRACT This paper summarises a study that analyses the surveys of different data bank containing data about social representations on science and technology in Spain, and specifically on Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Based on these previous studies we conclude that, contrary to traditional theories of a uniform, positive image, there is significant ambivalence towards technoscience among citizens in advanced contemporary societies. This theory was confirmed both for social representations of technoscience in general and for ICTs in particular. On these results, our paper will show the precise mechanism that these technophobic or ambivalent social representations intervene in processes of individual appropriation of Information and Communication Technologies and its and its implications for the creation of the digital divide. Without denying the relevance of sociodemographic and psychological usual variables, the paper will highlight the importance of such social images about the technoscience and ICTs in the genesis and development of digital divide. In addition to the surveys of different data bank, we will also provide empirical evidence from a study about spanish citizenship which have used both qualitative methods (with in-depth interviews and focus groups) and quantitative methods (using a representative survey). Finally, we will consider the consequences of this new explanatory approach to the use of ICT and the digital divide has for the processes of social exclusion in contemporary information and knowledge societies.

En este trabajo analizamos dos aspectos fundamentales para el surgimiento de la organización ciud... more En este trabajo analizamos dos aspectos fundamentales para el surgimiento de la organización ciudadana que nace como consecuencia de la acción política del cómico italiano Beppe Grillo. En primer lugar, estudiamos cómo, el líder de esta organización, construye un discurso en base a criterios de justo e injusto, cómo se definen a los responsables y cómo, finalmente, se proponen estrategias para dar solución a esa situación. En segundo lugar, estudiaremos las características políticas, fundamentalmente republicanas, de dicho discurso. Con ello pretendemos enmarcarlo dentro de un discurso político más general e interpretarlo de forma que podamos ofrecer una propuesta sobre la naturaleza política y el tipo de movimiento social al que pertenece la organización. El caso de estudio es la organización surgida a raíz del Blog del cómico italiano Beppe Grillo. Se ha realizado un estudio empírico de las opiniones y propuestas realizadas por Grillo a través de su Blog. El método utilizado para este estudio es lo indicado por la teoría del análisis del discurso ideológico (van Dijk, 1997 y 2004). Se ha utilizado el software T-LAB (ver. 5.1, Lancia, 2004) para el análisis de los textos.

Variables relating to attitudes and beliefs towards politics and sociodemographic variables are c... more Variables relating to attitudes and beliefs towards politics and sociodemographic variables are commonplace in studies on political participation. We take these two traditions in order to study digital political participation. However, rather than doing so in order to explain activism, which is usually the case, we seek to explain a specific type of inequality in the information and knowledge society: the political digital divide. Given that digital political participation takes place through a medium that is not universally used, namely the Internet, it is important to know which citizens are in a position to opt for the advantages the political use of this medium represents. Studies exist analysing the way in which the political digital divide appears in terms of sociodemographic and attitudinal variables. Here, however, we try to present a model that helps us understand how these two groups of variables relate in terms of the relationship to digital political participation. The aim is to offer a fuller perspective of the sources of digital political inequalities.

This paper aims to explore the factors that lead an Internet user to type comments on a political... more This paper aims to explore the factors that lead an Internet user to type comments on a political blog in more detail. Specifically, we sought to find out what political variables influence this behaviour and what uses of the Internet seem to favour it. We also studied the effect of a number of socio-demographic control variables. To do this, we used the data from the 2007 survey on "The Internet and political participation" (ref. 2736), run by the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas. We began with an exploratory factor analysis, which was followed by a logistic regression. In order to exclude influences on the model due to the first-level of digital divide, the sample chosen for the analysis comprised Spanish Internet Users.

Objetivo de este trabajo es estudiar la influencia de los recursos económicos y educativos de los... more Objetivo de este trabajo es estudiar la influencia de los recursos económicos y educativos de los internautas sobre sus niveles de destreza a la hora de navegar por internet. Al mismo tiempo, se quiere averiguar si este tipo de habilidades está vinculado con un mayor uso político de internet. Si este conjunto de relaciones, que vincula los recursos del internauta con su implicación política digital, encontrara respaldo empírico, cabría entonces reflexionar sobre el hecho de que internet, lejos de ser una herramienta democrática "per se", pueda aumentar las diferencias entre las personas más implicadas en la política y aquellas menos interesadas en la misma.
Para cumplir con los objetivos de este trabajo, se han utilizados datos representativos de la población española. Mediante la implementación de un modelo de Ecuaciones Estructurales, se han puesto en relación las variables sociodemográficas con una escala de habilidades digitales. A su vez, las habilidades digitales se han puesto en relación con la participación política digital. Los resultados obtenidos se han enmarcado dentro de la teoría de la Brecha Digital Democrática
