This study focuses on the curation of newsletters specialized in Covid-19 news from the mass medi... more This study focuses on the curation of newsletters specialized in Covid-19 news from the mass media of France, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the USA. The newsletters of 21 media outlets –15 traditional and six digital natives– were studied during the peaks of the pandemic in April and November 2020. The study follows an evaluative method of curation quality, based on the analysis of the following parameters: number of curated contents, time range, origin, sources –according to organization type and morphology–, authorship, sense-making techniques, and hyperlink informational function. The results identify the main characteristics of news curation in these newsletters and their differences from general newsletters, as well as the sources used, and also make it possible to establish curation quality standings and to identify differences between countries and among legacy and pure digital news outlets.

La investigación, basada en el análisis de contenido textual de los discursos y de los tuits publicados, ha permitido constatar tres hechos: Primero, que en las intervenciones públicas de Obama se mantienen las principales características propias de la retórica presidencial norteamericana ante la guerra contra el terrorismo, especialmente al presentar al enemigo pero sobre todo al propio bando. Se expone el uso que la JFK Library hace de las redes sociales para dar a conocer su actividad, s... more Se expone el uso que la JFK Library hace de las redes sociales para dar a conocer su actividad, se presenta la cuenta de Twitter @JFKsaid, creada en 2010 para conmemorar los 50 años de la llegada de J. F. Kennedy al poder y se estudia el uso de dicha cuenta para difundir los fondos documentales digitalizados del centro. El resultado pone en evidencia que la institución aprovecha poco el potencial de dicha cuenta para divulgar sus documentos digitalizados, entre los que se observa unaínfima presencia de videos frente a una mayor cantidad de fotos y archivos de audio. One of the important political events of those years was the struggle for civil rights of the African Americans. This article examines the use that has been made by the @JFKsaid account to promote Kennedy’s memory in the field of civil rights and the rhetorical purpose with which the discourse of the published tweets was articulated, using the methodology of the analysis of textual content. The main hypothesis is that the account is intended to strengthen the figure of the president and the structure of presidential power in the U.S. The results confirm this hypothesis and show as well that the basic function of the account is rememorative, as it allows to collectively remember the main historical events related to civil ...

El relevo en la Corona en junio de 2014 suscito gran interes y un intenso debate en la prensa espanola. Fueron muchos los rotativos que editorializaron sobre el acontecimiento. Nos proponemos analizar el contenido de los editoriales publicados – donde por definicion se fija la posicion de un periodico– a traves de una metodologia disenada ad-hoc basada en el analisis de textos.
Populism is a phenomenon that has been acquiring great relevance over recent years in the United ... more Populism is a phenomenon that has been acquiring great relevance over recent years in the United States and Europe. Literature on the subject has identified the existence of a populist style that also affects political communication. The aim of this article is to analyze the structure of issues and the functions of messages circulated by a populist party in order to determine the presence and incidence of this style’s main components. The methodology is based on a quantitative analysis of the content of the Twitter profiles of the Spanish political party Podemos and its leader, Pablo Iglesias, during the 2016 Spanish elections. Totally, 2,612 tweets were analyzed. The results allow the identification of a strategy of complementarity, which appears as a new component in the communication style of populism in the digital environment. Podemos is also seen to lean toward antielitism and its leader toward the communicative construction of “the people.”

Resumen Se presenta el resultado de una investigación sobre cómo se usan las redes sociales en co... more Resumen Se presenta el resultado de una investigación sobre cómo se usan las redes sociales en comunicación política; en concreto, acerca de cómo utilizan Twitter los políticos y los periodistas en España. Mediante el machine learning y con una herramienta creada ad hoc para llevar a cabo un seguimiento del rastro digital (Digital Trace Data) se han observado y analizado los hiperenlaces que han compartido los diputados españoles de la XII legislatura y los principales periodistas del país, desde junio de 2018 hasta mayo de 2019. Los resultados revelan una relación endogámica entre periodistas y políticos. Así, la interacción tanto dentro de cada grupo como entre los dos se desarrolla alrededor de los principales medios españoles, por lo que ambos colectivos comparten información dentro de un bucle autorreferencial que provoca un efecto echo chamber y anula las posibilidades de expansión del conocimiento que proporcionan las redes sociales y el acceso al hipertexto.

The present article studies the political aspects of the messages published in the Twitter account @JFKsaid, created by the JFK Library to commemorate the ftieth anniversary of Kennedy’s presidency. Through the content analysis methodology, we study quantitatively the political content of the 3.253 messages published in Twitter 50 years after Kennedy’s term. We observe how Kennedy’s political legacy is transmitted today, whose presidency was characterized by the welfare state and civil rights and involved in Cold War politics.

Bush deia als soldats nord-americans que acabaven de tornar de l’Iraq: “en aquesta batalla hem lluitat per la llibertat i per la pau al món; gràcies a vosaltres, la nostra nació és més segura.” La seguretat dels EUA i la llibertat són els principals arguments amb què Bush va justificar la invasió de l’Iraq. Aquest llibre repassa com els presidents nord-americans han explicat la guerra al llarg de la història, amb una incidència especial en el conflicte del Vietnam i en la guerra contra el terror. S’hi estudia com el poder pretén fer acceptable la guerra a l’opinió pública, i per això es parla també de persuasió, retòrica, lingüística, comunicació política, argumentació i anàlisi del discurs, fent un recorregut pels mecanismes que permeten construir significats, en un procés en el qual té un paper fonamental la televisió amb la seva gran capacitat de seducció, que no de convicció.

The present article studies the political aspects of the messages published in the Twitter account @JFKsaid, created by the JFK Library to commemorate the ftieth anniversary of Kennedy’s presidency. Through the content analysis methodology, we study quantitatively the political content of the 3.253 messages published in Twitter 50 years after Kennedy’s term. We observe how Kennedy’s political legacy is transmitted today, whose presidency was characterized by the welfare state and civil rights and involved in Cold War politics.
