Present computer-supported situation awareness systems provide real-time information fusion from different sources, basic data analysis and recognition, and presentation of the corresponding data using some augmented reality principles. Robust Ear Detection For Biometric Verification

Ear biometric recognition has received increasing attention in recent years. However, not so much... more Ear biometric recognition has received increasing attention in recent years. However, not so much work has been done on the ear verification problem. Automatic ear detection (or segmentation) from facial profile images becomes an essential preprocessing stage with high impact on the subsequent recognition/verification tasks. This paper presents a new ear detection method based on the use of circular Hough transform and some anthropometric proportions to detect the ear region accurately. After detection, the extracted contours of the segmented ear region are used to verify the identity of an individual by adjusting a fuzzy snake model on it. The proposed ear detection and verification methods were successfully tested with images from three different databases presenting different variations to evaluate the robustness of this approach.

Comparing Elastic Alignment Algorithms for the Off-Line Signature Verification Problem

This paper systematically compares two elastic graph matching methods for off-line signature veri... more This paper systematically compares two elastic graph matching methods for off-line signature verification: shape-memory snakes and parallel segment matching, respectively. As in many practical applications (i.e. those related to bank environments), the number of sample signatures to train the system must be very reduced, we selected these two methods which hold that property. Both methods also share some other similarities since they use graph models to perform the verification task and require a registration pre-processing. Experimental results on the same database and using the same evaluation metrics have shown that the shape-memory snakes clearly outperformed to the parallel segment matching approach on the same signature dataset (9% EER compared to 24% EER, respectively).

Comparing Feature Point Tracking with Dense Flow Tracking for Facial Expression Recognition

This work describes a research which compares the facial expression recognition results of two po... more This work describes a research which compares the facial expression recognition results of two point-based tracking approaches along the sequence of frames describing a facial expression: feature point tracking and holistic face dense flow tracking. Experiments were carried out using the Cohn-Kanade database for the six types of prototypic facial expressions under two different spatial resolutions of the frames (the original one and the images reduced to a 40% of its original size). Our experimental results showed that the dense flow tracking method provided in average for the considered types of expressions a better recognition rate (95.45% of success) than feature point flow tracking (91.41%) for the whole test set of facial expression sequences.

Publicity panel detection in images offers important advantages both in the real world as well as in the virtual one. For example, applications like Google Street View can be used for Internet publicity and when detecting these ads panels in images, it could be possible to replace the publicity appearing inside the panels by another from a funding company. In our experiments, both SSD and YOLO detectors have produced acceptable results under variable sizes of panels, illumination conditions, viewing perspectives, partial occlusion of panels, complex background and multiple panels in scenes. This paper introduces an adapted fuzzy snake approach for efficiently solving some of the practic... more This paper introduces an adapted fuzzy snake approach for efficiently solving some of the practical constraints in the offline signature verification problem. Our method is called fuzzy shape-memory snakes due to its resemblance to shape-memory alloys, which are metals that in high-temperature conditions can remember their original shape. In our approach, the snake also "remembers" its geometry during its iterative adjustment to a test signature. Off-line signature verification aims to establish the degree of genuineness of a given test signature when compared to a reference signature. Due to the shape and size variability in signatures of the same subject, a system with tolerance to imprecision and also with some "memory" of its initial configured shape, would be very useful for this complex verification problem. To our knowledge, snakes and other active contour models have not been previosly applied to the offline signature verification problem. We consider that they could be properly adapted to be useful for this task. Consequently, we have developed a fuzzy snake framework for signature verification which takes into account some practical constraints of this problem when applied to bank checks. Over other signature verification systems, our approach has the advantage of using only one training signature per person. We introduce the fuzziness for the considered signature verification problem in a double direction. First, when iteratively adjusting a shape-memory snake (which is obtained from the training signature) to a considered test signature. Second, when measuring the similarity degree between the snake and the test signature after the adjustment (or verification task) using a Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy inference system, which is trained with three signature features (coincidence, distance and energy) provided by the adjustment. Some advantages of our approach are that: some involved parameters in the internal (shape) snake energy are now eliminated, and a more efficient and natural snake adjustment to the test signature is achieved. This paper also provides a study of the biometric classification errors when comparing our off-line signature verification approach to other non-fuzzy ones using the same signature database.

Three-dimensional facial surface modeling applied to recognition

Applications related to game technology, law-enforcement, security, medicine or biometrics are be... more Applications related to game technology, law-enforcement, security, medicine or biometrics are becoming increasingly important, which, combined with the proliferation of three-dimensional (3D) scanning hardware, have made that 3D face recognition is now becoming a promising and feasible alternative to 2D face methods. The main advantage of 3D data, when compared with traditional 2D approaches, is that it provides information that is invariant to rigid geometric transformations and to pose and illumination conditions. One key element for any 3D face recognition system is the modeling of the available scanned data. This paper presents new 3D models for facial surface representation and evaluates them using two matching approaches: one based on Support Vector Machines and another one on Principal Component Analysis (with a Euclidean classifier). Also, two types of environments were tested in order to check the robustness of the proposed models: a controlled environment with respect to facial conditions (i.e. expressions, face rotations, etc) and a noncontrolled one (presenting face rotations and pronounced facial expressions). The recognition rates obtained using reduced spatial resolution representations (a 77.86 % for non-controlled environments and a 90.16% for controlled environments, respectively) show that the proposed models can be effectively used for practical face recognition applications.

Our approach is applied to the off-line signature verification problem where signatures are scanned and then converted into binary images. This way no dynamic information of the signers is available. We also have considered some real conditions for the verification problem when applied to bank check. For example our system uses only one training signature per subject. Involved system parameters are tuned to solve the task in an effective and efficient manner. A two-layer perceptron is build for signature classification and it uses only two signature features (distance and matching factor) provided by the adjusted snake. Finally, a study of the system for a signature database is provided.

Automatic face recognition is becoming increasingly important due to the security applications de... more Automatic face recognition is becoming increasingly important due to the security applications derived from it. Although the face recognition problem has focused on 2D images, recently, due to the proliferation of 3D scanning hardware, 3D face recognition has become a feasible application. This 3D approach do not use the colour of the faces, so, when it is compared to the more traditional 2D approach, has the main advantages of being robust under lighting variations and also of providing more relevant information. In this paper we present a new 3D face model based on curvature properties of the face surface. As will be presented, our system is able to detect the subset of characteristics of the face with higher discrimination power among a large set of them. The robustness of the model is tested by comparing recognition rates using both controlled and non-controlled environments regarding facial expressions and face rotations. The difference between the recognition rate of the two environments of only 5% proves that the model has a high degree of robustness against pose and facial expressions and that is robust enough to implement facial recognition applications, which can achieve up to 91% correct recognition rate.
