The acquisition of grammatical categories: a state of the art

This contribution reviews recent research on the acquisition of grammatical categories, focusing ... more This contribution reviews recent research on the acquisition of grammatical categories, focusing on three aspects of the problem: parts of speech, inflection, and subcategories of words. It appears that children are sensitive to the distribution of the various classes of words surprisingly early, and that inflectional categories are mastered by age three despite the complexity of their acquisition. Subcategories of words take longer to acquire. To account for the facts, it is generally assumed that children are equipped with a distributional learning mechanism, but given the complexity of the factors that must be taken into account, some constraints must be placed on this mechanism. Various types of possible constraints are discussed, from innate knowledge to processing constraints. 1. Connaissance de la morphologie dérivationnelle chez les francophones et non-francophones de 6 à 8 ans

Cette étude porte sur les compétences en morphologie dérivationnelle d'élèves francophones et... more Cette étude porte sur les compétences en morphologie dérivationnelle d'élèves francophones et allophones de première et deuxième année du primaire. Trois tests de conscience morphologique visant quatre aspects de la compétence morphologique (réceptif, relationnel, syntaxique, et distributionnel) ont été administrés à 41 enfants francophones et non francophones d'une même école. Sur toutes les dimensions, les compétences en morphologie des enfants dif-fèrent significativement du hasard. Globalement, les non-francophones ont des résultats inférieurs à ceux des francophones, selon l'aspect des connais-sances morphologiques en jeu. Les non-francophones réussissent moins bien pour les aspects réceptif et distributionnel, mais ne se distinguent pas des francophones au niveau de leurs compétences relationnelle et syntaxique. Syntactic and metasyntactic abilities are some of the components involved in reading skills. Prev... more Syntactic and metasyntactic abilities are some of the components involved in reading skills. Previous studies indicate that both are correlated with reading skills in L1 (e.g., Bowey, 1986; Gombert & Colé, 2000; Nation & Snowling, 2000; Tunmer, 1990). However, the same correlations are not systematically observed in L2 among heritage language children, i.e. children who speak a minority language and are schooled in their L2, the majority language (e.g., Da Fontura & Siegel, 1995). It should be noted, however, that these correlational studies do not provide information about the relative importance of each ability in the reading process in both L1 and L2. In this regard, recent studies investigated how linguistic knowledge, metacognitive abilities and reading skills all relate to each other (e.g., Van Gelderen et al., 2003, 2004, 2007). ABSTRACT This paper presents an analysis of a subclass of denominal verbs in French, more specifi... more ABSTRACT This paper presents an analysis of a subclass of denominal verbs in French, more specifically those which are interpreted as involving an entity which is located with respect to a location. It is shown that (1) when the N on which the verb is formed is a descriptor for a displaced entity, the location where this entity ends up appears in direct object position; (2) When the N on which the verb is formed is a descriptor for a location, the entity which is located appears in direct object position. An analysis of these verbs is developed which accounts for the relation between their conceptual structure, their morphological structure and their argument structure. This analysis relies crucially on the existence of a semantic predicate AFFECT, which is defined as follows: an entity is AFFECTED if the nuclear information of the verb describes a modification of the status of that entity. Real and apparent counterexamples to the analysis are discussed.

ABSTRACT Diachronic changes in the distribution of French negative expressions are studied, conce... more ABSTRACT Diachronic changes in the distribution of French negative expressions are studied, concentrating on the period covering Old and Middle French (9th c. to 16th c.). An account is provided for the evolution in the distribution of the Old French n-initial negative expressions (negun, nuns, nesun, nient, nului), as well as for the emergence of Modern French negative expressions (personne, rien, aucun). It is shown that there is no priviledged direction of change: in the evolution from Latin to Modern French, some expressions became less negative over time, while others became more negative over time. It is argued that these diachronic changes result from the emergence of variants of lexical items with different feature specifications, followed by grammar competition between these new variants and existing variants, or other lexical items. It is argued that two features are involved in the changes: (1) a semantic feature responsible for the interpretation of an expression as a polarity item, and (2) a morphosyntactic feature responsible for the n-word behavior of an expression.

Dans les principales déclaratives, le verbe tensé occupe généralement la seconde position, précédé d'un expression simple ou complexe, mais il peut également occuper une position plus en retrait, ou encore la position initiale. 1 Pour leur part, les subordonnées tendent à être de type SVO, mais, à nouveau, d'autres ordres sont également attestés, notamment l'ordre XV(S) typique des principales est observé dans les subordonnées complétives introduites par certaines classes de verbes, comme les verbes déclaratifs (cf. Vance 1997, chap. 4). Ce type de V2 en subordonnée est bien attesté, sous une variété de conditions, dans les langues germaniques et scandinaves (Heycock 2006), et nous n'en parlerons pas ici. In the first part of this paper, we examine the relation between the contribution of these prefixes and that of the reflexive clitic se, arguing that se is not a lexical operator of reflexivity/reciprocity because the prefixes bleed the input context for such an operator. In the second part of the paper, we discuss cases where verbs prefixed with auto-and entre-are not reflexive, asking how it can be that a verb that apparently should be interpreted as reflexive or reciprocal can have a complement distinct of its subject.

In the first part of this paper, we examine the relation between the contribution of these prefixes and that of the reflexive clitic se, arguing that se is not a lexical operator of reflexivity/reciprocity because the prefixes bleed the input context for such an operator. In the second part of the paper, we discuss cases where verbs prefixed with auto-and entre-are not reflexive, asking how it can be that a verb that apparently should be interpreted as reflexive or reciprocal can have a complement distinct of its subject.

It is argued that, contrary to recent analyses, there was no stylistic fronting of the Icelandic ... more It is argued that, contrary to recent analyses, there was no stylistic fronting of the Icelandic type in medieval French but a number of leftward stylistic displacements (LSD). The arguments against a stylistic fronting analysis include the absence of intervention effects and the absence of an empty subject condition. It is also argued that the LSD expression may have a diversity of informational roles and that the variety of constructions observed may be accounted for by a combination of (remnant) VP movement and short scrambling. Finally, three distinct constructions are identified: a V2 construction, an LSD_Left construction, with the LSD expression to the left of the subject, and an LSD_Right construction, with the LSD expression to the right of the subject. LSD_Right is the unmarked construction, and it includes the case where the subject position is unfilled.
