Serving as tutors to a group of 61 high school ESL learners during a school semester, the pre-service teachers provided CF on texts written by the learners and exchanged via e-mail. The authors analyzed the types of CF they used and the types of errors they chose to focus on, along with the factors that explained their choices. Quantitative analyses of the frequency distribution of CF types relative to error types and qualitative analyses of data collected through journals and interviews confirmed that, similar to their in-service colleagues, pre-service teachers overused direct corrections at the expense of more indirect CF strategies. Drawing on the challenges faced by the preservice teachers, the authors highlight the importance of implementing such
opportunities for pre-service teachers to engage with and reflect on their emerging CF practices.

Most ESL teachers would answer this question with a resounding Yes while at the same time wondering how to meet the challenge. The collaborative project reported below was designed to provide ESL teacher trainees with an opportunity to experience the ups and downs of providing corrective feedback on writing and develop their awareness in this regard. To this end, the teacher trainees acted as corrective-feedback tutors to high school learners during one school semester. During the course of the project, they kept journals documenting their reflections in regard to this demanding pedagogical practice. Time constraints, motivation, and fear of making mistakes themselves or of not providing adequate guidance to the learners were among the major hurdles encountered by the tutors. In interviews conducted at the end of the project, the tutors offered suggestions for overcoming these difficulties and surviving the corrective-feedback trials and tribulations. The survival tips presented were drawn from the tutors' recommendations as well as from insights from corrective-feedback research.

Indeed, the results of the many experimental studies on written corrective feedback carried out over the last 20 years have been so contradictory that second language teachers looking to support their pedagogical choice to correct, or not correct, the grammar of their students' written production are left in the midst of controversy. In this article, I examine these studies from a different perspective. Rather than interpret the conflicting results as a demonstration of the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of corrective feedback on form, I suggest that findings can be attributed to the research design and methodology, as well as to the presence of external variables that were beyond the control and vigilance of the researchers. # Should teachers spend hours correcting their students' written productions? This is a fundamental question for second language teachers who are trying to help their students develop fluency and accuracy in their second language.
