Security and Migration in Asia explores how various forms of unregulated and illegal forms of hum... more Security and Migration in Asia explores how various forms of unregulated and illegal forms of human movement within Asia and beyond the region have come to be treated as 'security' issues, and whether and how a 'securitization' framework enables a more effective response to them. The process and theory of 'securitization' and 'desecuritization' have been developed within the international relations literature by the so-call Copenhagen school scholars, including Barry Buzan and Ole Waever among others. The topics explored in this well- presented and engaging book cover geographic areas of China, Northeast Asia, Central Asia, the Russian Far East, Southeast Asia, and the Hong Kong SAR, and includes research on: human trafficking and people smuggling. financing illegal migration and links to transnational organized crime. regulated and unregulated labour migration. the 'securitization' of illegal migration in sending, transit and receiving countries. This book provides compelling insights into contemporary forms of illegal migration, under conditions of globalization, and makes a contribution to the literature in international relations and migration studies.

This study explores a social marketing campaign aimed to promote compassionate responses to discl... more This study explores a social marketing campaign aimed to promote compassionate responses to disclosures of sexual violence from peers and raise awareness of university-based formal support services. Findings from a survey ( n = 189) and follow-up focus groups ( n = 11) conducted with university students in Australia indicated that exposure to the campaign may support students’ self-perceived confidence in responding compassionately to disclosures of sexual violence and raise awareness of university-based formal support services. These findings suggest social marketing may be a useful tool to form part of universities’ sexual violence response and prevention strategies. These findings may help inform future university campaigns.

Gillard, who described the two states as "great mates", 5 said they had talked about Afghanistan, the Arab Spring, climate change, economic reform via the G20 and the importance of trade, both in regard to the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement and the Doha round of multilateral trade talks. 6 Obama reaffirmed the United States' shared interest in expanding trade in the Pacific region, but he did not sign onto the Trans-Pacific free trade zone as Gillard had hoped. 7 Nevertheless, the President joined Gillard in condemning Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's crackdown on civilians in Libya and personally thanked Australia for its "extraordinary contribution" to the war in Afghanistan, indicating that 2011 would see a transition for Afghan-led control of security. Overall, the press briefing was replete with positive remarks from both leaders. "Because of the deep and longstanding relationship between our two countries", President Obama declared "we have no stronger ally than Australia." 8 Following their formal talks, Obama hosted Gillard on a rare visit to Wakefield High School in neighbouring Virginia, where the leaders fronted questions from twenty local students. The school visit, described by Washington insiders as "an extremely rare off-campus foray", 9 saw the leaders discuss some Australian cultural quirks, including a friendly debate about Vegemite, which Gillard called "addictive" and Obama lambasted as "horrible". 10 During her eight-day trip, Gillard also held meetings

The Southeast Asian Politics of Natural Resource Use: Impacts on Food and Health Inequalities

How do current environmental policies and programs in Southeast Asia align with the ASEAN environ... more How do current environmental policies and programs in Southeast Asia align with the ASEAN environmental goals? How do these on-going environmental efforts influence other priority areas on food and health? Through content analysis, we highlight the key themes in the ASEAN environmental policies and determine how existing policies and programs of select member countries align with the ASEAN environmental goals. We argue that member countries have limited commitment towards achieving the ASEAN’s environmental goals and that there is a need to further strengthen current environmental policies and programs in the region. We also argue that the normative constraints in the region, as well as variations in their political interests, have strongly contributed to failures in attaining its environmental goals. The conclusions and implications of the paper link to discussions on governance and ASEAN regional cooperation mechanisms on managing natural resources and regional health dialogues.

Infectious disease outbreaks primarily affect communities of individuals with little reference to... more Infectious disease outbreaks primarily affect communities of individuals with little reference to the political borders which contain them; yet, the state is still the primary provider of public health capacity. This duality has profound effects for the way disease is framed as a security issue, and how international organisations, such as the World Health Organization, assist affected countries. The article seeks to explore the role that domestic political relationships play in mediating the treatment of diseases as security issues. Drawing upon an analysis of the securitisation of avian influenza in Vietnam and Indonesia, the article discusses the effect that legitimacy, competing referents and audiences have on the external and internal policy reactions of states to infectious diseases, specifically in their interpretation of disease as a security threat. It describes collaboration between the university’s School of Political Science and International Studies and its School of Law to facilitate a student working group to plan, present, and disseminate students’ research on this topic. An interdisciplinary learning environment was encouraged by having two academics, one from each of the schools, facilitate the working group.

In doing so they may adopt forms of cosmopolitan extraterritoriality whereby they can extend the criminal liability of their own citizens and corporations, for their actions abroad. Utilizing Linklater’s work on conceptualizing and classification of harm, the chapter analyses the domestic motivations for the implementation of Australia’s extraterritorial child sex tourism (CST) laws in 1994, and explores the actual implementation of laws via a review of selected prosecutions from 1995 to 2014, as well as international cooperation efforts that have evolved over time. The account presented here is not that the Australian state is a unitary cosmopolitan actor. This article introduces a special issue on the emergent relationship between the rhetoric and imp... more This article introduces a special issue on the emergent relationship between the rhetoric and implementation of the rule of law concept in Southeast Asia. It thematically introduces four country case studies (Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam), and the case of ASEAN’s adoption of the rule of law in region-building, which are included in this special issue. We highlight how ideals that are arguably central to the “tradition” of the rule of law are being excised, marginalised, defended and/or undermined in Southeast Asian contexts. We emphasise how the very concept is deeply contested and far from neutral – at stake is the very notion of “law” for whom, and for what.
